I've done a mistake!

I put Lake in the space of the question.Confused

Now I tried to add him but it's not possible, so I took Jakko Jakszyk off and put Lake.

Wetton.  It isn't even close.  I couldn't honestly tell you how good Jakko is because when I saw KC on their last tour the sound system was so bad that the drums and the Mel's sax drowned out Jakko (singing and playing), Tony Levin and even Fripp.  I want my money back.

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

In my opinion, Wetton has a breathless voice. He couldn't sing a melody of great breath.

For example, in an epic song like Exiles, you can hear the limits of Wetton's voice, which can not keep up with the melody. Had there been Lake, he would have amplified the melodic and epic music with his voice. in fact, with Wetton KC mostly played rock songs.

With multiple options, Lake and Wetton are both going to dominate.  A straight fight between the two would have been more interesting.  Would probably still vote Lake but that would be a tough call.  Thought Wetton's performance on Firth of the Fifth with Hackett's band was great and it's totally uncharacteristic of his usual singing style.

This is me too. Best singer and favorite singer are two different questions. I like the song sung in the Whetton period better, but Lake is probably the better sheer talent. With all do respect to Epitaph, I thought his best vocal opportunities came about with ELP.

I always liked Lake best, and have had problems enjoying Wetton's singing. However, as far as bass playing goes, it's another story altogether. Strangely enough, some of the songs in which I have liked Wetton's singing best have been some originally sung by Lake. Still, I wish I could have heard Lake singing things like Exiles and Starless.

Lake, Wetton and Belew were all great vocalists and all fitted the style of the band at the time perfectly (or rather contributed with their vocals to define it). Even Haskell was fine and almost up there with the other three; and I don't have complaints against Jakko either.

Nope, Jakko is definitely no slouch at all. He absolutely nailed it when we saw him in Cardiff.

I would put him level second with Lake, and Wetton top. The Wetton period is my favourite, although I have also grown to appreciate Belew more as the years have passed.

Sorry to hear that. I really do like Belew's vocals.

That's cool...I know there are tons who love Belew's vox in Crimson.  I should clarify, to me he often tries too hard to be "weird" and comes off like David Byrne - a style that always seemed a poor match for King Crimson.  I will admit though there are a handful of Crimson songs I think Belew's lyrics/vocals work really well so maybe I'm being too hard on him (Dig Me, Indiscipline, ProzaKC Blues, Cage, Happy to be Happy...).  I guess the real issue is I'm one of those few Crimson fans who thinks they should have stuck with their original plan and called the 80's band Discipline as it was a new stylistic beginning and approach.  That said, maybe I don't dislike his Crimson style as much as I originally posted, but I still prefer all the other vocalists in the poll ahead of him and won't give him a vote LOL

OTOH, I absolutely love Belew's lyrics and vocals on his solo albums,  especially Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King Wink

Hard to choose, since each one of them was the singer in a different time and facet of their music, and they do a great job adjusting to the band's sound. I guess my favorites are Lake and Wetton, and I'm having a hard time deciding who gets my vote.,

I am surprised that Adrian Belew is not receiving more support. While I love the 73-74 Crimson for their instrumental prowess and improvisation, I think Belew is by far the best Crimson vocalist, and also lyricist. His lyrics add considerable depth to the compositions, and his voice is so unique and his singing so melodic. There are actually only a few excellent lyrics in the early Crimson period (Schizoid Man, Starless, only a few others - most of the best other early Crimson tunes were instrumentals or it was their instrumental parts that made the tune). However, Belew has written tons of great songs - a really original songwriter.

My very favourite vocal performance on King Crimson... and among my very favourites of any song, is on Epitaph. Now, who among the King Crimson singers could have done justice to that one singing it live? I have heard Jakko try it out and it just doesn't work. Or which other singer from any other band might do that one right?

I'm with a lot of the others, thinking that Greg Lake is the better singer...but I love John Wetton's vocals as well.  It's not as technically good as Greg's but I love the sound of it anyway.  Their two periods with KC are my hands-down favourites, although I do like pretty much anything with KC on it.  Smile  Jakko is also my next fave, though not on this list.  So I voted for Greg.  Pity that both are gone.

count me in the daft club as well...   though even I wouldn't put but Boz over Wetton but Wetton was not exactly a good singer.. Belew however completely unique and highly distinctive and was just as much a part of that era of K.C. as his outerworldly guitar playing... so yeah..  consider me a daff duffer. Belew over Wetton..but both lightyears behind Lake.. the #3 greatest rock singer ever in terms of pure vocal talent.

Lake by so so much.  Moreover, his vocal work with KC was only matched by a small handful of his performances with ELP.   But I must admit I much preferred early KC to any ELP

Haskell, Boz and Wetton...well, they only proved that KC's material could succeed in spite of the vocalists.  I mean, Wetton utterly mangles Exiles.  At least Haskell on Cirkus manages to wring abject fear out of his atonal croak.  I'm not interested in anything after Wetton so no comment

That would be exactly the same order in which I would put them, even with the double sign of how much better I like Lake over everyone else. Only I'm not sure where I would put Jakko, either before or right after Belew (and definitley over Wetton)... I guess Jakko before Belew too, for me.

Lake sings on 2 albums , yes, his voice is superb (main reason I listen to Love Beach...) but I think Wetton’s vocals suit the music best that they produced afterwards. All singers worked for their tenure.

I am curious too. I mean, even if I exclude the heavy metal guys, I've got Daltrey, Cornell, Jeff Buckley, Mercury, Rodgers without even thinking too much about it.  And note these are the non prog guys.  There's the towering presence of Hammill ahead of Lake in prog.

Greg Lake.

Fwiw Wetton v. Belew afterward.

Always thought Wetton did better with Asia - he had his own lyrics and more suitable changes for such things and was not forced to sing in situations (Dr Diamond) no one else would have. Of course he is the one who set up Starless...

I'm with my friend Steve....I've seen Jakko twice, and he was excellent both times!  Seeing KC perform "Pictures of a City" live was a dream come true for me.

My choice is Wetton, Lake didn't have a very long tenure in King Crimson, and I like the Wetton era the best as well.  However, Lake was a superb vocalist and lyricist.  RIP both men.

When it comes to preference, it's
Haskell > Lake > Wetton = Boz > Belew

When it comes to skill, I believe Lake is on top, he has the biggest voice. So i went with Greg Lake.
