You guys knew this was coming. As the results in the "who should go up against SD" poll suggested you guys overwhelmingly chose Roxy Music so here it is. Let the fun begin and don't forget the popcorn. LOL

Roxy Music. They touched some remarkable peaks of art and pathos with their first two albums
(and with some songs of Stranded [Song for Europe] and other Lps).

Steely Dan songs: High class production, very patinated, good compositions but I dont feel the soul, the pathos.

Funny thing. I do like the Dan, but they're far from my fave. But so far, they've been the obvious slam dunk choice in every one of these polls so far.

Much closer, but still Steely Dan...

Love Roxy Music, but have never bothered with Steely Dan, based on the small number of songs I've heard, so I won't vote.

SD seem highly regarded, so can someone recommend a SD album that may engage my enthusiasm?

Actually apart from a handful o f hits it was their debut album "Can't Buy a Thrill" that clicked with me first. Chronologically should work well. The follow-up Countdown to Ecstasy is brilliant too and infact every 70's album is close to perfection. And this way you'll get to experience their natural growth/transitions.

-As for myself for the first time in these polls I didn't vote for Steely Dan.

weird but for me they both have one perfect album--Aja---and-- Avalon----the rest is a mixed bag--I'll take Steely Dan by a hair  as they are the local boys where I have a home--the college they went to is still well known for its jazz and classical music classes and bands -and I love jazzy music.

Again I'd say you can't go wrong by checking them out chronologically, but you may want to skip Manifesto & Flesh + Blood and go straight from Siren to Avalon

I have to go with Roxy Music on this one, but it is very close.

They both have some great albums.  This is a great matchup.

I would be extremely biased toward Steely Dan in almost any poll.
I do like the Roxies a lot but Steely Dan have never put out a bad album, not even a mediocre one, they are all great.
Aja being the touted masterpiece. Their music bears multiple repeated listenings for minute intricate details and the lyrics are mind-boggling.

Really? Have you heard the last two SD albums? I would say they hardly went out with a bang.

Is it so incredible to you that there are those who would disagree? I'd count Two Against Nature as my sixth-favourite SD album. I'd also consider both the last two Dan albums a light year ahead of the inexplicably-worshipped lounge-lizard pap that is Avalon. And I say that as a Roxy Music fan of 36 years standing

In my opinion Steely Dan have never reached the peaks of Roxy Music first and second album.

Nope, not incredible at all. In fact I expect it. That doesn't make me any less likely to state my opinion though just like you stated yours. ;)

Fan of both. Too difficult for me to separate them. Just on Avalon, it's pop, not prog, but is it any less a piece of art because it's not prog? Hardly. Just personal taste.

Whew...tough choice for me...two bands that I like quite a lot.
There's a uniqueness to both bands and a very original approach by  each.
It may be a cop out but I'll say equal on this one.

Gaucho killed the 'Dan for me after a string of highly likable albums. I get something new out of Roxy' every time I listen to them although weak portions of their albums can be challenging to the ear. Hard to choose here.

right on Doc...  from a purely musical evaluation I'd rate them equal in terms of what they brought to the table as both had many great albums and were extremely unique and original. Though again the collection of musical talent and how it was used in Dan sets them above pretty much any group one can compare them to.

Roxy never really connected with me the way the dark cynicism and corresponding bleak worldview of the Dan did..

I guess I'd chalk that up to difference of opinions. Two Against Nature, and Everything Must Go are two collections that I have played over and over, and could probably play again tonight.

But then again, I own every decade-release of Fagen, and have played those over and over. (Sunken Condos being probably the most lackluster.) And 11 Stacks of Whack (which shows what part of Dan sound that Fagen's releases were missing), and Circus Money

I really don't care if the Dan is "prog" or not. If you can listen to Morph the Cat and not understand how the delicious complexity of the horn arrangement makes a difference from radio pop, then I don't care about how someone would categorize anything. Prog to me is "More to listen to and for". TAN and EMG have that for me. Some bands can actually make me enjoy funk (as well as playing Funk on guitar--which is just FUN!).
