Still don’t know what’s so good about Musical box

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

As nouns:
1.Hogweed
2.Box
3.Fountain

For me, it's:
1. Fountain
2. Hogweed
3. Box

Very solid recording, where Genesis truly "picks up" IMHO.

The epics that bookends this album are probably both in my Genesis top three. I guess Fountain of Salmacis but it used to be Musical Box (an early favorite and introduction to prog).

I guess some folks wouldn't recognize an epic build-up with following climaxes if jumped up and it bit them in the arse. And if the melody isn't great - how is it that I know the every second of the ten minute long piece by heart?

I actually enjoy said track quite a bit, but for some reason my brain doesn't associate it with being a classic track (personal bias lol). Nursery Cryme, for me, is such a weird Genesis record. It's the transition zone between their earlier debut works, and their (arguable) peak era from '72-'75 with Gabriel. Nursery Cryme sounds like Genesis gearing up for the epicness they'd become - and that's by no means a bad thing!

Don't forget - this is the opinion of the same guy who praises Battle of Epping Forest Wink

I saw you praising Battle of Epping Forest in the other thread, and I just hate it for the very same reasons I hate Harold the Barrel (though at least this one isn't so long, nor do I like the rest of the album as much as Selling England). Oh well, there's just so much diversity in tastes for music (and just about everything else)

I do love the song, but I don't really care much for the story. Somehow I don't really like the stories Gabriel writes, or at least not the way he tells those stories.

Until the fourth minute it's very monotonous. A difficult incipit. Then the instrumental parts shake it a little but fails, except in small strokes, to be enthralling by combining the vocals with the instrumental parts. Overall, I feel forced. On the contrary, in Trespass, all the instrumental parts seem to me very natural, with a clear melody or an enthralling rhythm.

I have a tendency to prefer an artists work at the early stages when the sound and approach is yet to be calcified. What other people often refer to as transitional albums are often my favorites (and I usually don't hear it as one). That some listeners can prefer anything on Foxtrot A-side to the grand opener on Nursery Cryme is a complete mystery to me. And well yes we hear things differently - If I was musically tortured being forced to listen to Epping Forest on repeat I'd crack faster than if it was a Vengaboys hit-collection.

I do love the song, but I don't really care much for the story. Somehow I don't really like the stories Gabriel writes, or at least not the way he tells those stories.
Oh I wouldn't know I rarely know exactly what any song is about and don't care much about paying attention to stories (I usually prefer the "wrong" version that my mind creates). But mainly just pick up some words and phrases that I like (or dislike) and enjoy the mood, atmosphere, ride or whatever. Love this though:

“While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor was playing croquet
with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William, sweet-smiling Cynthia
raised her mallet high and gracefully removed Henry’s head.
Two weeks later, in Henry’s nursery, she discovered his treasured
musical box. Eagerly she opened it and as "Old King Cole”
began to play, a small spirit- figure appeared. Henry had returned -
but not for long, for as he stood in the room his
body began ageing rapidly, leaving a child’s mind inside. A lifetime’s desires
surged through him. Unfortunately the attempt
to persuade Cynthia Jane to fulfill his romantic desire led his nurse to the nursery
to investigate the noise. Instinctively Nanny hurled
the musical box at the bearded child, destroying both…"

There is in my opinion no weak track on "Nursery Cryme"; I love all nine tracks (I am of course talking of the extended "Nursery Cryme" which includes the tracks "Happy the Man" and Twilight Alehouse"). The short tracks on the album are either funny ("Harold the Barrel"), melancholic ("For Absent Friends"), dreamy ("Harlequin") or encouraging ("Happy the Man").

I'm right on the same page with the both of you. Nursery Cryme and Trespass are both so great from beginning to end. And Nursery Cryme in particular is the most canonical in defining Old Genesis in my mind.

I may get slammed for saying this, but......
I think that Genesis lost something by the time they did Foxtrot. I can’t find the right word (innocence, perhaps ?). That pastoral ‘tweeness’ that permeates NC and Trespass. I don’t know, they still did tremendous albums but never quite like these 2 albums.

Well, the Lamb is my favorite, but I am of similar mind. Foxtrot lost something. Oh, it's still great. Don't get me wrong. Nevertheless, something of the aural fullness was gone. I think they thought they packed some of their material with too much sound, particularly with Return of the Giant Hogweed, and hadn't figured out how to best distribute it in stereo space or bandwidth. Foxtrot seems to me like a reaction to that, like they modified some of their urges to stuff arrangements. Maybe no better example of that is Watcher of the Skies. They wanted the big mellotron sound at the opening, but it was a solo affair. Only once the big brass and string combination from the mellotron subsided did the band chime in. Foxtrot had a lot more turn-taking where everyone had a chance to get their bit in more or less unhindered. It definitely marked a course change.

Trespass and Foxtrot are the enjoyable albums from the Gabriel era. Never been a big fan of Gabriel’s voice or lyrics though. Just a very rough voice which dropped off a lot on the lamb and were hard to listen to. I much prefer 76-78 Genesis over 73-74

Pretty much yes. The rest of what you write is interesting but I just wanted to clearify that I too still enjoy them past my 1971-favorite. They continued to produce plenty more treasured tunes - and also quite a few not so treasured.
