Subject: Make your own Genesis album!

Ok, Here's the deal , you get to pick 8 Genesis tracks to go on your own compilation album. The one rule is you can only use one track form each existing album. Pick for any 8 albums you like. Don't worry about song length, just pick 8 songs.
Something like this...
1. Suppers Ready
2. Firth of Fifth
3. In the cage
4. Dance on a Volcano
5. One for the Vine
6. Behind the lines
7. Keep it dark
8. It's gonna get Better

Hmm the thing about Genesis for me is they have quite a few great songs that are scattered about on albums so this seems like a good exercise
1. Musical Box
2. Watcher of the Skies
3. Cinema Show (could also be Dancing with the Moonlit Night)
4. The Lamia
5. Entangled
6. One for the Vine
7. hmm I ran out here. maybe a couple of the poppy songs like Jesus He Knows Me and Land of Confusion

I can't make my list according to these rules. Mostly, I need 3 songs from Selling England, otherwise the compilation isn't complete.

Tricky topic: the first Genesis album was (according to Tony Banks) a Bee Gees pastiche, and since the ninth album Genesis delivered mainly prog pop. So I use the album Live (I didn't notice restrictions about that) to pick up make 8 tracks:
The Knife The Musical Box Supper's Ready Watcher Of The Skies (from Live) Firth Of Fifth In The Cage Los Endos .. In That Queit Earth ...

I get it, I would probably want three from SEBTP as well. ( at least two) I just wanted to make people dig a little deeper.
Otherwise it would have been mostly Foxtrot, Lamb & SEBTP.

Nice thread idea - even the classics can still make a worthwhile thread.
1) Watcher of the Skies
2) Entangled
3) Turn it on Again
4) Fly on a Windshield
5) Looking for Someone
6) Dodo/Lurker
7) Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
8) The Return of the Giant Hogweed
An alternative version would have (all not selected above by the thinnest of margins), this time without attention to order: The Knife - Harlequin - Get 'em out by Friday - The Cinema Show - Carpet Crawlers - Dance on a Volcano - Down and Out or Behind the Lines - Abacab
PS: Not that anyone is interested, but the order is of course the play order on the compilation album, not a preference order.

OK, I think I know how to solve my problem, with a bit of cheating:
- The Knife (from Genesis Live). - The Musical Box (from Nursery Crime). - Supper's Ready (from Foxtrot). - Dancing with the Moonlit Knight (from Live at the Rainbow). - Firth of Fifth (from Selling England by the Pound). - The Cinema Show (from Seconds Out). - In the Cage (from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway). - One for the Vine (from Wind & Wuthering).

Recipe for making an album that I like: 1) Play by the rules. 2) Pay attention to the musical order rather than just listing chronologically or according to preference. The last one looks great in that respect.

Thanks Lewian, if you are referring to mine.
I actually did put thought into these, trying to imagine an album that would be interesting without just grabbing the most acclaimed songs. I tried to make something I'd want to hear, and did consider the order of songs on each side of my vinyl.
And I have to say, it was liberating to exclude Dogs, Echoes, CTTE, and Supper's Ready.

Indeed I do. It was clear that this list was meant to be played in that order and put together with care. Despite the fact that I nominated Watcher of the Skies as opener and am quite convinced of that position... but obviously more than one thing will work, and not all will work.

OKOKOK - I picked an "alltime" favorite from each album, without thinking how they would fit together. But if I was introduced to Genesis with this 71 minute long CD-collection back in the day I know I would be completely blown away (I really love that track from their debut album):

I came across this thread for the first time today. I'm a big fan of Genesis in the Peter Gabriel era and I love the idea of picking one favourite track from each of eight albums to make up a compilation album. I'll have to give my old Genesis albums another listen though before deciding on my final choice of songs, so I'll come up with my selections later in the week. This is going to be so much fun.
@Argo2012:- Looking through your old posts, I noticed you've posted quite a few of these "Make Your Own Album" threads, so I'm very much looking forward to contributing to those album selection threads too in due course.

I'm relatively new here so I have a lot of catching up to do with viewing the fascinating and entertaining "Make Your Own Album" threads. I noticed Keneth Levine and Flower King Crimson have posted threads on the same theme too, including some of my favourite prog artists, such as Mike Oldfield, Yes, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, Camel & Renaissance, amongst others, so I'm looking forward to putting my own albums together on those threads too. I'm going to make a start on listening to all of my old Genesis albums again tonight, beginning with my favourite Genesis album, "From Genesis To Revelation". That seems like as good a place as any to begin listening.
My Top 5 Genesis albums:-
1. From Genesis to Revelation
2. Selling England by the Pound
3. Trespass
4. Nursery Cryme
5. Foxtrot

Squonk [1976] Ballsy, imaginative, a perfect opener. One for the Vine [1976] Perhaps the most accomplished song of Collins Era. Guide Vocal [1980] The lyrics say it all: "I am the one who guided you this far (...) I call you for I must leave (...) There was a choice but now it's gone".
The Cinema Show [1973] Enter Gabriel Era, thank you. Seven Stones [1971] Magical moment with edwardian rock. Stagnation [1970] Underrated gem on par with later classics. The Lamia [1974] Dark, emotional, sophisticated; works great in the middle. Supper's Ready [1972] Chills down my spine.

My ex tempore list is thought to be a one vinyl compilation (max 48 min., some editing would perhaps be needed), and it's unimaginatively chronological, but if I was to take this more seriously I'd probably think of another kind of running order. Just for my own curiosity, I pick only 4 tracks from the Gabriel era, and also I try to avoid choosing the most expected songs.

Couldn't fit in Home by the Sea or Watcher of the Skies
That's quite a long list, considering you're only supposed to pick eight Genesis songs from eight different albums.

I think I already posted one, but I just had the idea of how much I'd like a compilation album of great Genesis "shorts" to enjoy in their own right, starting from the start, From Genesis to Revelation, to ....
1. "In the Beginning"
2. "Dusk"
3. "Harlequin"
4. "Can-Utility and the Coastliners"
5. "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)"
6. "The Light Lies Down on Broadway"
7. "A Trick of the Tail"
8. "Blood on the Rooftops"
9. "Snowbound"
10. "Man of Our Times"
11. "Man on the Corner"
12. "Silver Rainbow"
13. "Throwing It All Away"
14. "Hold on My Heart"
P.S. You can cut off the list at Wind and Wuthering. . . . Or not.
