I rarely see any posts or polls about prog metal so was just wondering what most on here think of it.

I love Dream Theatre. Otherwise I'm not very familiar with most of it. I enjoy Crack the Skye by Mastodon and Magma by Gojira if either of those count. Opeth has some great riffs as well.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I’ve only listened to Dream Theater and operation mindcrime. Like dream theater a lot, will choose other bands in other genres first though

Strange poll. The top two choices are not mutually exclusive.

It's also curious the option of calling prog metal cheezy and liking regular metal better since its regular metal which is more prone to adding a layer of cheez whiz.

Personally, I love it, but that doesn't mean I place it above other prog subgenres.

If you like DT, you should give Fates Warning a go.

I don’t enjoy prog metal as a rule, but Operation: Mindcrime is absolutely fantastic, and one of my 10-15 favorite prog albums ever. So I voted ‘other.’

Sorry I didn't do the poll to your liking. You can't please everyone. Anyway, I suggest the first option for you.

Bands like megadeth, iron maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Saxon, etc were not cheesy. You are thinking of the hair metal bands who I admit were cheesy.

It's not a matter of like vs not like, but rather not including options which aren't mutually exclusive.

In any case I did indeed cast the initial vote under the first option as it seemed closest to my sentiment.

Oh for crying out loud! Confused This isn't a logic class it's a freaking prog poll.

Obviously it is about liking vs not liking since you were complaining about it. You wouldn't complain if you liked it. Anyway, not that I really care but I changed it anyway and so I hope you are happy now. Smile If not then I don't know what to tell you. I'm not changing it again. You can start your own poll. Also, you should consider changing your user name to pedantic progger. ;)

Anyway, no the first option as of now still has zero which means you must have chosen the second option.

I guess I can say that I love it, though perhaps I don't really know as much as other people might do, and I don't really love everything in it. But the bands that I have come to love are really great.

I Absolutely love it.

I've played in said bands for over a decade, and nothing has improved my chops more than studying straight jazz and ironically, technical progressive death metal.

Death

Atheist
Cynic

Ayreon and Riverside are two of my favorites, while I've never been too much into Dream Theater.
I also like bands like Arcturus and Opeth. Senmuth is a subgenre on his own, I think.
I enjoy Artension mainly because of Vitalij Kuprij.
Out of the prog world (not sure if really out) Serj Tankian is a big. His "Elect The Dead Symphonic" may deserve an evaluation as the rule says "At least 1 prog album".

Not much of a fan. I like prog and I like metal but when you put the two together, I'm pretty unimpressed. I prefer prog with a harder edge but when it veers into prog metal, it does almost nothing for me. I find it less interesting than other genres of prog, if that makes any sense. A lot of it also sounds samey to me.

As a youth I was a big Queensryche and Iron Maiden fan and still like them to a degree. I also enjoy some Tool and Dream Theater in (very) small doses and I liked when Porcupine Tree dabbled in metal but that's about it really.

I wasn't complaining, just pointing out a potential difficulty for voters. Really wasn't meant to be a biggie.  I still went ahead and picked the one that I thought most closely represented my thoughts on the subject.  It's not like I was launching some sort of boycott here.

My recollection was that, in the original poll, I chose the first option.  (if my recollection was correct that the first option was I love it and the second was it's not my fave) Hence my point that I participated despite any concerns in logic I may have had.

I was as yet unaware you had changed the poll until I read your response, hence I had not yet had an opportunity to revote.

While I can get into it on occasion when the mood strikes, it all tends to sound the same to me; many of the bands are interchangeable.

I've found some great prog metal, but found others that should have stayed locked up in the CheezWhiz bottle.  Pretty much like all of the genres, some is good, some is not, I try to give every genre a chance, and always seem to find some good everywhere.  But if you don't try, you won't find the real treasures.

I believe you voted for the second option since when you made your initial statement there was still a zero next to the first one. Not a big deal though. I have since changed it to be more "mutually exclusive" as you put it.

I like Dream Theater & Riverside in small doses.I haven't really check a lot of other stuff out.  I'm not always a big fan of stuff being heavy for the sake of being heavy. I like it if they back off once & a while to give in some dynamic contrast. Otherwise it get overwhelming & tedious.

As a genre, I just can't fathom the appeal.  It's got too much macho aggression to be good progressive rock, and compositionally, it overthinks things too much to be good metal.

If Dream Theater, Symphony X or Opeth count then it's ok - I like them all and listen them rather often (I've even used to accept Akerfeldt growling on older records :-)  ). But to say I love it or like it a lot... hmmm. Sometimes. Probably the third option is for me.

I Like some of it but not all. Third choice. I listen expecially to DT and Tool. They are Great but they tend to excess and so, before the end of the album they become tedious. Then I like some of Riverside and Opeth. Anywayit's not easy to me to reach five stars with Progressive Metal.

The more I try to like it, the less I do. Many bands I've tried, highly rated by prog metal fans, but it doesn't do it for me. I respect the bands that work very hard recording this type of music though, but I guess it's not my cup of tea.

Torn between "I like it a lot" and "I like some of it but not all/ have to be in the mood."

The prog-metal bands I love — Fates Warning, Savatage, Queensryche, (early) Eternity X, Dream Theater, and most Threshold — are the ones I love. I'll never part with their albums.

But after a sorta-kinda burnout some years ago, I stopped actively seeking out prog-metal because those bands (and some I forgot to mention) really cover all the necessary ground with respect to a fusion of heavy melodic metal and symph prog. Unless I stumble on something that blows me away, those bands cover it. And yes, I used to listen to the likes of PoS, Ayreon and Symphony X, but it didn't last. I'm not counting King's X as "prog-metal" because to me they're not. They're just an awesome heavy rock band. Rush isn't prog-metal, either (though they likely spawned it).

There are a couple of bands that exhibit some characteristics of metal that I enjoy. But if it gets TOO heavy -- especially if they start the gruff vocals -- it turns me off.

That reminds me of the Peruvian band Flor De Loto who are considered folk prog but when I saw them live they were very metallish. Just because a band has a flute player it doesn't make them folk prog. LOL Good band though.

I've got a pair of Flor de Loto albums. I do think they have some nice folk elements, and even though they go near metal territory, I don't think it's right to call them prog metal... it would be more like prog that is heavy... there seems to be a good deal of it nowdays.

Metal / heavy guitars seem to have gotten into most modern prog bands anyway (even if the bands don't go full metal)... almost as much the rock element was part of prog in the 70's.

While I don't really agree with that analogy I do agree with the fact that metal and or heavy guitars have infiltrated modern prog to a great degree. I think it would be hard to pinpoint which band or bands started that trend but Magic Pie's first album in 2005 had it as did Porcupine Tree's "in absentia" and 2000's "immortal?" by Arena. Even before that you had the bands Mastermind and Par Lindh Project in the 90's with metallish guitars and even some of the Flower Kings sort of leaned in that direction a bit. So while it is really nothing new it has become very common place. Maybe even to the point where it is hard to avoid it if you are buying modern prog albums. So yeah, there can definitely be a thin line between prog metal and heavy prog. That's for sure.

Potentially, but not in my case, I don't think.

I'm of that age where my first beloved bands were KISS, AC/DC, and Judas Priest. Rush led me away from metal toward prog (going backward toward Yes, ELP, King Crimson, etc.), while I was also absorbing punk and post-punk. I pretty much ignored most of what was going on in metal during the hey day of hair and thrash.

In the last ten years, though, I'd say the music that has thrilled me the most has been in various forms of metal (from Gojira, Alcest, Opeth, Sleep and Zeal + Ardor, and on and on).

In terms of what this site has specifically labeled as progressive metal, I can say I adore Riverside (seen them twice live now) but Dream Theater have never clicked for me.

oh you remember correctly. This forum crawled with those acne scarred blue balled scum haha. They were tolerated for some time but I remember well...the tipping point.. it was the poll I saw one day.. 'Petrucci's favorite breakfast cereal'. On top of nearly every single prog poll on the first page.. being DT related.

needless to say .. I lost my sh*t LOL.. and mustered the AR thugs and Symphonic horsemen and let slip the dogs of war.... and we ran down every single f**king DT fan we saw..the innocent and weak of convinction were easily displosed of... the fun ones were those mouthy enough to resist.. and they were shot down in cold blood.

as you say.. good luck finding that stuff.  The admins blasted those and the bloodbath that resulted in the forum during that time.. and purged the forum of those thread just as efficiently and we did of their fans. Zapped into atomic dust man.

I'm about to turn 55 and I love prog metal. I was well past teenhood when DT dropped Images and Words and all I could say was "Where have you been all my life?"

Before you heard I&W were you already a fan of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Queensryche? I won't include Metallica because they were thrash but basically I'm just curious if you were already a bit of a metal head when you first got into Dream Theater.

Anyway, I don't like metal or prog metal all the time but sometimes it definitely hits the spot. I can imagine it being good music for when you are in a bad mood and need something a bit aggressive to listen to to calm your nerves maybe.

Difficult for me to find a great prog metal masterpiece. I like it, but love symphonic or neo prog.

The whole "metal is for teenagers" deal has pretty much lost its luster through the decades. At a metal gig I went to recently, featuring black and death metal bands like Dark Funeral and Incantation, there was a fair amount of gray hair in the crowd. Hell, some of these bands consist of dudes in their fifties.

As for young metal fans, the scuzzy weed-scented long-hair types of the 80's have gradually been being replaced by a much nerdier crowd, at least it seems that way.

Also, if you are physically fit, don't buy a metal shirt at a gig. It's like the shirt gets wider towards the lower half. I guess it makes sense given that the average metal fan is either too chubby or scrawny for well-formed shirts. In fact, the best bet is getting an XL girls shirt.

none of this options suits my take on this genre.
I like it generally but I've heard some godawful stuff as well (but then again I can say this about any genre LOL)

I'm laughing because you're spot on LOLClap.

I played in the scene for years in and around Boston/Manchester, and you described it to a T. Most band shirts suck now because they use those dense, heavy AAA cotton T's that are like wearing an egg carton. I got to meet Incantation a couple years back at MDF, great guys!

I personally I am not so much in metal except Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth and Alice in Chains. I am a rock music lover. Symphonic prog, eclectic prog and heavy prog are my cup of tea on prog side

None of those bands are typically considered prog metal although imo IM and Metallica have had prog elements and moments at times. I can't really speak to JP but apparently they have as well(but maybe not to the same extent).

I chose the second option, "I like it a lot but it's not one of my top 2 or 3 subgenres". My two favourite Progressive Metal artists are Ayreon & Dream Theater. I like every album I've ever heard by those two technically proficient Metal artists. Thumbs Up

I like some/Have to be in the mood.

It's not something I listen to with much enthusiasm, although I've seen Dream Theater and Opeth a few times and they're always good live.

To be honest I prefer straight metal over prog metal, notably classic metal and not modern stuff where the drums all sound hyper processed and the playing seemingly computer programmed flawless. I like it rough around the edges; old Sabbath, Priest, Motorhead etc.

Still cant vote but for me it a mix of

"I like it a lot" and "have to be in the mood" love a lot of metal  - prog and not prog - but have to be in a special mood.

"I like it a lot but it's not one of my top 2 or 3 subgenres" definitely fits my stance. I listen to Prog Metal quite often actually.

If I remember rightly, this forum had shed loads of Prog Metal posts and fans about a decade ago.
Then they must have gone elsewhere or shut up.

I'm not a fan of it myself, but then I stopped being a teenager before Dream Theatre started

I guess it is also that there was a peak of very good new and interesting "harder" Prog around 15-20 years ago, with a lot of Love for bands like DreamT - Tool - Opeth - Riverside - Mars Volta - Pain of Salvation and many more.

Some of them have changes, some are gone and if the still exist they are not ground breaking anymore.

NB: The age thing is overrated - many young people listen to old music, and many old people like myself listen to loads of young bands.
