These two bands always reminded me of each other for some strange reason. I guess maybe because they started around the same time and kind of were in the same heavy neo camp.

Also, please read all options before voting and vote for the one most appropriate to your experience.

Enchant by far. Not neo prog imo

No, but they did start out that way. I said "neither/ not a neo fan" as a possible choice because I used it before and it just popped up as a default. It was easier to just include it than try to figure out a better description but since Arena are considered neo prog I figured what the heck I'll just throw it in there.

I'm generally equally happy to listen to either.

I've still only got through 6 albums of Enchant on the 10 disc box set. It's a bit of a slog really. Arena are much better on keyboards and have more interesting albums for me. Enchant are an excellent melodic metal band with good players but just not that interesting or varied in approach. Arena gets my vote.

Arena is fantastic stuff, gets my vote, but mention for Frost* who also are really great.

agreed although I'm not sure they fit the poll idea and sadly have only released 4 albums. That said perhaps we could do a John Mitchell poll? Arena v Frost* v Lonely Robot v Kino v It Bites? I would need to check what other bands he's been in, there must be quite a few!

Not as many as you might think. Other than those it looks like he has been in two others A(yep that's the name of the band just A) and the Urbane. He's played with other bands as a guest such as Blind Ego and Gandalf's Fist but Arena, Frost, Lonely Robot and It Bites are the main ones as far as prog is concerned. He also played with John Wetton apparently.

Musically they are equal. But the preachy religious lyrics of the last Enchant album turned me off, so my vote goes to Arena.

I don't see how their lyrics are preachy... Confused

Here are some from the tune Within an Inch

Nothing could save me
Except the hand of God
He came and gave me
Mercy

Plenty more awful lyrics on The Great Divide

so mentioning  mercyful God is preachy?
Try Stryper and Narnia for preachy. Even Neal Morse...

Yep it's preachy. Have you even listened to the album I'm referring too?

So I'm going to go out on a limb and say you aren't a Neal Morse fan then? Wink

Yes I did. It would be silly if I didn't, wouldn't it. LOL
I didn't mind the lyrics. I've seen worse...

Love ? and when Neal was in Spock's Beard. I have to not pay attention to the religious lyrics. I would rather have lyrics that don't speak to God or Satan. Rush's Freewill works for me as it leaves something to the imagination.

Then wouldn't that be a vote for "I don't know both bands well enough to vote?"

Good question.
I have a number of Arena albums, so, to me, they're a known quantity.

I was referring to Enchant who you said you didn't know. I think it makes sense for people to only vote for a band if they are familiar with both bands and not just one(otherwise the "I don't know both bands well enough" option).

Enchant. Both are not top tiers for me, and though Arena has John Mitchell, I think his talent is not fully utilized in the band. Enchant, though has less records, are a little more consistent, so they get my vote.

Enchant gets my vote though I do like Arena, I listened to them recently.

Listening to Arena is like hearing two cats fighting in the alley at midnight. Unbearable, really. Never have heard Enchant, but they have to be better than their opponent here, right?

Geekfreak, asking as a form member, please consider slowing down with bumping old polls. It makes it harder to follow active discussions and to follow the newest topics, especially for those who use the "Latest Forum Posts" feature to follow the discussions. Personally, I'd rather see a little more time, thought and substance go into each post rather than many posts which say very little.
