I propose that we wait a few years before listing, because we lack hindsight and insight for recent albums

Indeed, we may just see a few votes for IQ's latest album out of pure fanboyism, enthusiasm and discovery excitement...

.... or we couls already list from 2010 unti 2016

My vote goes to the Neo-Prog band Astra for their second album "The Black Chord". I would have voted for their first album "The Weirding", but that came out in 2009. Smile

By the way, I'm using the term "Neo-Prog" in its loosest form as a chronological definition before anyone picks me up on that. Wink

Psychedelic Paul, as I read that first sentence, I started writing an answer in my head. But then I read your 2nd sentence... ;)
I've only heard The Weirding which I have on vinyl. Really good, I love the production, really thick and heavy.

Out of what you listed Logan I’ve only heard blackstar. If you had to choose one to recommend what would it be.

I think the best recommendations are personalised. What I would recommend depends on the individual's tastes. If I really think about it, then it might not be any of those I listed. That said, without thinking much about what you like, possibly Setna, the Bent Knee, that Dead Can Dance, that Chrome Hoof.... Maybe try Bent Knee's Shiny Eyed Babies and the Chrome Hoof. Or, actually, maybe try Kayo Dot's Coyote. No, don't think so.

EDIT: Okay, going with Matt Berry's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f_3iqHpnVM" rel="nofollow - Kill the Wolf . Or maybe not.   My success rate with recommendations is not fantastic (in terms of positive feedback), even in recommendations topics where I'm trying to match as well as possible to what a poster asks for, which is irregardless of my taste (that said, I sometimes find it hard to recommend music that I dislike even if I think they might like it). My tastes tend to be rather off-beat to begin with commonly.

EDIT: Should have thought it through more to begin with before posting (I don't like to keep people waiting long), maybe Dungen's Allas Sak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y01i-h8M04c" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y01i-h8M04c

My personal fave may be Kosmischer Läufer - The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Program Vol 3, but I would only recommend it to people into classic Kosmsiche (kinds of classic progressive electronic/ Krautrock). Constantine's Day of Light is another retro one, which I would recommend for those into classic psychedelic folk and rock.

One, you might enjoy, did think of it before, but forgot to say is Yolk's Solar or the Winstons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9px6e98ZHvE" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9px6e98ZHvE The Yolk will be my final answer, even if it may be the wrong one.

Great list, with a few titles in common with mine. I heard almost all the non-RIO/Avant titles (I wear my pan on special occasions). I'll need to check out E-MLO and Constantine.

I have both Minami Deutsch albums but I don't enjoy them as much as their label mates Kikagaku Moyo. I didn't include "Masana Temples" for being too recent.

That Electric Orange is amazing too. I regret I didn't buy it at the time, it's insanely overpriced these days.

I thought that Jaga Jazzist album was released in the last decade but it's from January 2010 Tongue

By the way, my favourite Kosmischer Läufer is Vol. 2.

Constantine is a pleasant retro psychedelia trip down memory lane (what's fun in such cases is also noticing its musical reference points).

From your list, I really should have included Sinoia Caves' Beyond the Black Rainbow (love it and that was an error of omission). And I did know Vespero. I've been looking into some of yours, and Maserati's Rehamanizer is very cool -- I like the retro references. I've been listening to that Colour Haze album and really loving it. I have lots to check out from your list. Thanks for posting it, and to other lists which also have more music for me to check out and revisit (like Ian's and Raff's for the panhead factor ;) ).

And the second Kosmischer Läufer is terrific, and has been my fave, but I've returning to the third volume the most of late.

------------------------------------------------------

While not Prog, the album of this decade that has got the most spins from me over the past summer was the Dan Jones soundtrack to Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie, which is quite retro again, with an assortment of evocative styles (including my loungey/ easy-listening library music sitting under a palm tree with a Mai Tai sort of pleasure, and mixes elements of tropica, funk, and electronics a la Sven Libaek and Roger Roger/ Stringtronics, is Holst-like at times, and has a John Barry (and John Williams) type film score feel at times. I like the eclecticism of it).

^ "Day of Light" was really good!

The Sinoia Caves might be the best PE album of the decade. I never felt the need to see the movie though.
Rehumanizer reminds me a lot of Zombi's Escape Velocity (an omission in my list!) with a Post Rock flavour.
Colour Haze is one of the many albums in my list that was influenced for having seen them live.

From my list I'd recommend you specially Lizards Exist and Hooffoot. Two really great retro Psych/Jazz/Canterbury albums. Both recorded on tape and with all kinds of vintage gear Approve

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: October 25 2019 at 11:59
^ Thanks, Samuel :) Listening to Hooffoot now, had known the name, and I am loving it. That's very much my thing (lovely psych jazzy qualities, and some of that lounge-y 70s feel that I love). Thanks! And what I listened to of Lizards Exist I really like too. I also checked out some others from your list (not proper listens but for a taste) and they all hold interest for me. Of course Maserati had teamed up with Zombi in 2009 for a release (I have had some familiarity with both acts, but know Zombi better).

EDIT: As for the film Beyond the Black Rainbow, I've seen it, and it was quite interesting. I'd rather re-listen to the soundtrack than re-watch it.

Oh, another soundtrack, this time to a TV series, that I enjoyed is Mogwai's Les revenants soundtrack (2013). In that case it's mostly because I loved that French show. And non-Prog, but I found Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to Tarantino's The Hateful Eight wonderful. I'm not recommending those, just mentioning them. Ooh, but a favourite of mine is Mica Levi's atmospheric and quite intense Under the Skin OST (one of my very favourite modern films). It's not something for usual listening.

Me too. Watched it in Oslo, Norway, in a cinema called "Cinemateket". They screened it in the 70mm format, and when that amazing theme appears... That beautiful bassoon motif... Incredible!

^Road Salt one is a bold pick as it gets pretty universally slammed. It didn't quite make my list, but I really enjoy its melancholy retro-classic rock feel and raw, toned down technology. Sometimes 21st century hyper-fidelity needs to be put in check.

I fell in love with it right away, as you say it has a retro-classic very tight feel to it, saw them two times live in the Road Salt period and worked very well with this sound combined with older tracks.

I can't make a comprehensive list because I tend to get to know many things with significant delay, so haven't explored enough to say I know what the best are, but... surely an ultimate list should include Seer and To Be Kind by Swans!

Glad that I could be of help Smile. The new Steve Hackett album is his best since Spectral Mornings, IMHO, and the new album of IZZ is absolutely mind blowing.
