PROGDAY 2020 Update. It is with great sadness and disappointment that we must announce that for the first time since its inception in 1995, there will be no ProgDay this year. We have been postponing this decision in the hope that the situation with Covid-19 in North Carolina would improve. But unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. This last week North Carolina set a new daily record for new confirmed coronavirus cases. Cases increased 31.8% in the first 14 days of July compared to the last 14 days in June. The state also set a new record for hospitalizations and a new record for single day deaths. Phase Two of reopening was to end on July 17. Today Governor Cooper extended Phase Two for another 3 weeks. Another basic consideration is that a gathering the size of ProgDay is illegal (the current maximum allowed for outdoor gatherings is 25 people). There is absolutely no guarantee that the permissible crowd size will be increased sufficiently by Labor Day to accommodate the festival. Under these circumstances, we feel that proceeding with this year’s event would not be in the best interests of our family of attendees, patrons, vendors and staff. However, we understand that for many of our attendees ProgDay is not just another festival, but something special that they look forward to every year. For that reason, to mark the occasion, we are considering the possibility of doing something online over Labor Day weekend. Whether that will be possible, or what form it might take, is still to be determined. An update about this will be posted on the website at some point in the future as more information becomes available and decisions are made. Our best wishes for your continued well-being and safety. Since only one band was booked I don't see why that band couldn't do a zoom edition of Progday where they play online. They would be guaranteed to be the best progday band of 2020!

Virtual ProgDay 2020 Update and ProgDay 501(c)(3) Status. ProgDay is happy to announce that we are currently pulling together a virtual event for this year. The idea is to present streaming performances from 4 artists a day over the Saturday and Sunday of the originally scheduled ProgDay weekend (September 5 and 6). Once the lineup and scheduling are worked out, the details and instructions will be posted on the ProgDay website. Virtual ProgDay 2020 is being greatly facilitated by Tom Palmieri and Ann Rinaldi of ProgStock ( http://www.progstock.com/2020/" rel="nofollow - http://www.progstock.com/2020/ ). On Saturday, August 1, ProgStock kicked off the ProgStock Presents Virtual Series, a series of weekly shows streamed online through StageIt.com. After reading of ProgDay’s cancellation, Tom and Ann reached out to ProgDay and invited us to partner with them for our virtual event. The result is that Virtual ProgDay 2020 will be presented on Labor Day weekend as part of the ProgStock Presents Virtual Series. Please note that ProgStock is not getting anything for this. All funds that are raised will go to ProgDay and the bands that perform. Thank you Tom and Ann! We are also excited to announce that ProgDay is now a tax-exempt non-profit event. In 2017, Musical Arts Progressive Society, Inc. (MAPS), was formed. MAPS is a non-profit organization which advocates for, educates about and promotes national and international musical artists creating progressive and innovative music. Hi, Congratulations to you, Tom and Ann. AND, lest we forget, that it is a tax exempt non-profit event ... that is SOME AWESOME NEWS and something that is very important ... now we hopefully can count on the assist from a few bands, so they can better get seen all over ... rather than remain, the closet "progressives" that no one knows. I have written a thread here on streaming and demanding that something be done in that nature, and that streaming is likely to be the new "concert" venue, even for the great big bands, to cash in ... since the technology is there to scramble the signal to people that did not pay for it, thus making sure that the bands are protected from piracy ... even though there is always one out there that knows computers and code better than us ... but it's not like most people in a lot of bands, did not know who the folks were recording things, and releasing bootlegs ... something that several big names got through just fine, and even got the reputation for what great bands they were in concert ... and somehow, I am still thinking that record companies are doing their best to intimidate bands and the public about "piracy" when they are, by very far, the biggest pirates that rip off artists left and right a lot more than any bootlegger will ever be able to! So they now try to stop mp3's ... and pretty soon the wife's dinner cooking, and then lunch cooking ... for many reasons, all of which only have to do with one thing ... protect their criminal enterprises. Hopefully this is the new day, and the new way ... and many bands will wake up to it ... but it's in the cards, and you know it ... the Rolling Stones, streamed live ... and you pay $50 bucks for it ... within a year! Probably part of a goodbye thing ... but for us "progressives", it is a new start ... and we need to get going ... some bands are not going to get paid, but they will be able to sell more materials ... and that is important! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! This year we have tried to use our virtual response to the pandemic as a path to showcasing bands that we would normally not be able to present to the ProgDay audience. Virtual ProgDay 2020 Ticket and Performance Information Once it was decided that the physical ProgDay event would not happen, the decision to try to have a virtual event was born from the desire to have ProgDay continue in some form this year and to provide our regular audience with an experience that would be fun, entertaining and worth their while. So we set out to present a series of performances that would be streamed live, as they were happening. The challenge we faced in doing this was the combination of the short time frame in which to contact bands and for them to arrange a concert, as well as the really tough job of each band not only finding a viable performance space, but also having the ability for all of the band members to gather and play at the particular time they were to perform over ProgDay weekend. Ultimately, between the various situations created by the pandemic in various countries, the technical requirements and the lack of time for producing the event, it was just not possible for many of the bands to pull off a live-in-the-moment broadcast. The result is that Virtual ProgDay 2020 will offer truly live performances combined with pre-recorded shows done especially for ProgDay. In the case of pre-recorded shows, the concert you will see will be a performance that has been played and recorded especially for the ProgDay audience and has never been seen anywhere before. The prerecorded shows represent a huge amount of effort on the part of the participating bands to get their music in front of you. During prerecorded shows, we will speak live with band members that will be present during the broadcast. Once again ProgDay has assembled a group of bands that we think are worthy of your attention. While we know that many of you are already familiar with some of these bands, we also know that few of you will know all of the bands. To encourage our audience to attend all of the performances over the weekend, we have set ticket prices at $6 for all shows. We hope this economical price will allow everyone that is interested to experience all of the music. We also hope that those who are in a position to contribute more will show their appreciation to the artists by tipping additional money during the performances. Also note that when buying a ticket, the $6 price is a minimum that you can pay. It's impeccably assembled and played, while freely indulging the more insane aspects of progressive rock, avant-garde chamber music, and electric jazz....Despite the musical sophistication and adventure on Live at Yoshiwara, this music is extremely accessible to a wide swathe of listeners. Its release signals the magnificent arrival of Ghost Rhythms on American shores. Get it now." – Thom Jurek / AllMusic GHOST RHYTHMS is an avant-fusion band created in 2005 by composers Camille Petit and Xavier Gélard. Having worked in a variety of rock and progressive rock-type ensembles, neither had any background in jazz, but both had an interest in forming a jazz ensemble. To play their compositions, they recruited jazz and classical players for the group. Hi, With massive apologies ... the ticket "buying thing" is not for me ... I have no issues if it tells me that one band cost X amount of tickets, but having to purchase separate "tickets" for all the bands ... you just lost a customer. I wanted to hear music ... and did not wish to CHOOSE which one to see ... for me ALL THE BANDS is what make the show ... I guess I came to the wrong place ... I would be OK with a certain amount for the whole thing ... but that is not an option, since you are figuring that one band will get Xtimes100 and the other will get Xtimes3 ... sad ... very sad ... I don't even know what to think of this whole thing ... I was hoping for something meaningful for ALL BANDS ... not a select your favorite ... and get the other bands all ignored! Sorry ... I still hope it goes well, but I'm not putting out Credit Card information for 6 or 7 different times on the site! From the ProgDay Bands Page: ------------------------ Once again ProgDay has assembled a group of bands that we think are worthy of your attention. While we know that many of you are already familiar with some of these bands, we also know that few of you will know all of the bands. To encourage our audience to check out all of the performers over the weekend, we have set ticket prices at $6 for all shows (please note Mad Fellaz exception). We hope this economical price will allow everyone that is interested to experience all of the music. We also hope that those who are in a position to contribute more will show their appreciation to the artists by tipping additional money during the performances. ------------------------ So very clearly, we are advocating for attendees not to cherry pick performances, but to attend all of the broadcasts. From the ProgDay Tickets Page: ------------------------ In order to attend a show, you first must create a free account. Then you may buy Notes and use them to get performance tickets. For instance, if the ticket price is $10 for a performance, then you will use 100 Notes to purchase the ticket. ------------------------ The StageIt stie does not yet offer a festival style ticket option where you can buy entrance to multiple shows with one ticket. But basically, if all of the shows are $6, you are looking at 480 notes to get tickets for all of the performances. This is your “certain amount for the whole thing.” After you create the StageIt account, you buy 480 notes. You use your credit card one time. However, you are correct that to get admission to the individual streams you have to go to each of the event windows. The bands and I are sorry that this is inconvenient enough to prevent you from attending the shows. Perhaps another time. Michael |

Hi, I still do not understand this ... that's a listing of 2 different prices, and no menu option to just get them. I'm NOT going to choose a band ... I want to see THEM ALL ... not just one! I was hoping to review this, as the streaming thing is something that I have been fighting for for over a couple of years ... and I think it is important ... but the exclusivity with which it is set up, will hurt the lesser known bands ... and for "progressive" music, that is a death-knell! The time for enjoying these is almost gone anyway, and I'm not sure I will be able to watch these things anymore ... sad day in the ears of a person that loves the music, not the hit or the favorite band! Say hello to all the lesser bands ... hope to hear and see them sometime, hopefully not before I'm laid down for good!

You need to stop this, Pedro. You have NO CLUE of how things work. Michael Bennett has been organizing this festival for the past 25 years, and it was an extremely difficult decision for him and his collaborators. not to hold a live version of ProgDay this year. We have been attending the festival for the past 10 years, and know quite well what goes on behind the scenes, as most of the organizers are also our friends. This year they were offered this opportunity, which may not be perfect, but that's all we have for now. Vak and Hooffoot were my favorites. A very enjoyable weekend! Kudos to Michael Bennett and all the other organizers for a wonderful weekend of music! It was a lot of fun, though obviously not like the real thing. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a great 2021 edition, when we'll finally be able to reconvene with our friends at the farm. |
