Solo only for Frank also although I suppose it doesn't really matter much for him.

I'm not a big connoisseur of Zappa. So, option 4.

Zappa is in a different league than the others mentioned. Easy answer for me.

I was intially going to have it just be Frank vs Mike but decided at the last minute to throw Steve in there as well.

Like them all and could find good reasons to vote for both Hackett and Zappa, but I'll give it to Oldfield. Certainly a nice team for a poll.

I agree. He's way behind.

2 Oldfield

3 Zappa

I'm beginning to think maybe I should have had it be between just Hackett and Oldfield.

Two of my absolute favorites here - Mike and Steve. Frank is one of those figures whose music I respect more than enjoy. Vote went to Mike.

Saw the word Zappa and don't even need to know who the other choices are.

I have more albums by Mike Oldfield than just about any other artist, so that's where my vote goes. Smile

You mean the word Frank. There is a rather obscure Italian prog composer named Riccardo Zappa too. LOL However, his sound is much closer to Mike Oldfield than the famous Zappa so you might want to stay away. Wink

Zappa. Really love Oldfield´s three first, but after those he´s...naaah (return to Omma is the best after those three). I am not very much into Zappa after sixties, but he´s sixties albums are just so absolutely great!! And really don´t like Hackett solo at all.

I like pretty much everything Oldfield did up to and including Discovery ( there are a mixture of 3-5 star albums but that's okay) and then after that it it's patchy but there are still some nice releases.
Hackett - there are maybe 3 albums that I love ( Acolyte , To Watch the Storms and his latest) but a whole load of stuff that is mediocre. That said I think he has retained high standards throughout his solo career and works continuously.
Zappa - just don't know enough and along with many other bands would love to rectify that.

Voted for Oldfield because he has more albums I love (Ommadawn , Hergest Ridge, Incantations , Crisis , Songs Of Distant Earth , Amarok) than Hackett.

Steve Hackett gets my vote, but not by much. All three are fantastic artists on their own right.

Hackett or Oldfield... I love both. In the end it's Steve Hackett but other day it could be MO :-) Zappa isn't my cup of tea... I've tried one or two times but he leaves me cold.

In the end...Zappa....but really like that first Hackett lp.....again, I have always found Oldfield to be boring.

Hackett, but I don’t like not voting in favor of Zappa. So, no more polls pitting Hackett and Zappa, please.

All three have made some of the most wonderful music I've ever heard and all three have also made some absolutely unlistenable garbage in my opinion. I voted Zappa because I think the high points in his career have meant more to me... and only then did I notice the "solo only" caveat in the OP and most of those high points in his career in my opinion were put out under the Mothers moniker, but I still think his solo oeuvre just narrowly outshines that of Hackett for me.

Hackett's guitar is what drew me to Genesis (also Gabriel's weird lyrics). And Hackett is probably the reason I'm a progger.

I liked his solo Please Don't Touch. And when I sprung for Lamb Lies Down later, I was buzzed to find out that Hackett was the guitarist.

this...even if his all his albums aren't perfect--and there are a lot of them---most of them just suffer from his singing--the songs and his playing are excellent.
