Currently, Grimspound has a higher rating (+0.02) than Folklore, but the latter has more overall ratings. Both albums were released a year apart, and if I recall correctly, Grimspound is produced from the high-quality material that didn't make it onto Folklore. Further, while I've seen people refer to Folklore as one of their favorite BBT albums, I haven't seen the same said of Grimspound. So here's the question: which one do you think is better?

To start this off, I'm giving Grimspound the lead. The compositions are more interesting; the folk is there but different; "A Mead Hall in Winter" is glorious; and the overall sound made even the absence of horns negligible.

Probably folklore, but this is a hard question.

Folklore. Both great. Tough.

I haven't heard either yet. I really enjoy English Electric 1 and most of Grand Tour, but the other two i've heard didn't do too much for me (English electric pt 2 and the underfall yard)

These are actually the only two full length BBT albums I own. I also have wassail but that's an ep. Anyway, unfortunately I wasn't really impressed with either one so I probably won't vote.

In my humble opinion I think Grimspound is the superior album and wasn't aware it came from material that wasn't used from the Folklore album.

I didn't know that. I actually really like the first track on Grimspound. To be fair I only listened to both of these once so maybe I didn't give them a fair chance. I just found most of the material boring. There was one track on folklore that I just thought was an almost pointless song that was really boring(maybe the third or fourth song in).

Tough one but just by 00.1 "Folklore"

I like Folklore as well, but if I should choose the best five songs from these albums, there would be four off Grimspound and one off Folklore. Grimspound is imho (almost) as good as EE1.

Dave Longdon albums
1. Folklore
2. The Second Brightest Star
3. English Electric Part One
4. Grimspound
5. English Electric Part Two
6. The Underfall Yard
7. The Grand Tour

All are great though. I would put Folklore right up there as one of the best albums of the last 20-30 years. They just nailed it!

Yikes! Making me choose, eh?

Grimspound gets the nod, but just barely. Both are great listens.

Folklore is one of the very best albums released in the last 30 years, especially the vinyl which has Mudlarks and Lost Rivers of London included on the London Plane suite. Sensational.
Grimspound is excellent too, but I would be amazed if they ever surpass Folklore.

I fact-checked myself: there were only http://www.amarok-mag.com/interview-big-big-train-english-version-2016/" rel="nofollow - a few leftover songs from Folklore that made it into Grimspound. Building upon that, they wrote the rest of the album. Sorry about misinformation!
(Also from the same article is a great answer from Spawton to the question, "So, what does 'progressive rock' mean to you?")

I would go even further and say it's as good.

Mudlarks should've made it on Folklore proper. That album was missing a good instrumental, and that's one of the reasons I think Grimspound is better than it.

Both superb albums, but I just think Grimspound has the edge overall.

EEFLP, Grand Tour and The Underfall Yard still top them, though.

The period between English Electric and Grand Tour is disappointing to me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but some kind of spark that came in with David Longdon, Dave Gregory, and Nick D'Virgilio seemed to have left. Of these two, in particular, I think I'd have to choose Folklore. It's the only album from that period I've revisited with any frequency, and I do like the anthemic "Wassail" and the title track (though both are topped by "Alive," which really cooks and has more of that prog flavor- sorry, flavour ).

How many know the significance of the quadrilateral inside the image of the bird on Grimspound?

At least one. It is the constellation of Corvus (Raven).

Give that man (I assume) a coconut!

I know it because I wrote a paper some years ago on SU Ursae Majoris variables, of which TV Corvi is an example.

I only have Eng Elec 1.....can some one recommend the next one or two to buy...?
I like their overall sound but there seems to be a lot of similarity from lp to lp.

The Underfall Yard and Folklore. They sound similar to EEptI.
