I'd like to say a big THANK YOU and wish a WHOLE LOTTA LOVE to everyone who  posted on Gentle and Giant's "Where is Psychedelic Paul" thread while I was OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY from here. It was a real HEARTBREAKER reading of how the good members of ProgArchives were left feeling DAZED AND CONFUSED by the COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN caused by my sudden disappearance, which was NOBODY's FAULT BUT MINE. We've all had GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES, especially just lately, during this BLACK DOG economic Depression we're all currently going through, which can sometimes leave us feeling TRAMPLED UNDER FOOT by our own governments. I hope you're all doing okay. Returning here to be back amongst my proggy friends again was a real CELEBRATION DAY for me and I've already ascended the STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN again after finding another four great prog albums to review since my return. It's been TEN YEARS GONE since I first discovered ProgArchives, but when it comes to the soul of ROCK AND ROLL, THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME through the passing of the generations. THAT'S THE WAY of classic Progressive Rock, which always sounds fresh and original, no matter HOW MANY MORE TIMES you hear it. Take the rip-roaring Hard Rock of Led Zeppelin for instance - their particular brand of stomping Heavy Prog is as solid and unyielding as ACHILLES' LAST STAND. Prog's timeless appeal is WHAT IS AND WHAT SHOULD NEVER BE lost with NO QUARTER given to the ephemeral wannabe rappers and hip-hoppers of today. Anyway, sorry to RAMBLE ON. It's getting late IN THE EVENING here IN THE LIGHT of a penumbra Moon, so I'm going to don my 1970's KASHMIR coat now and listen to some more classic British Prog. ALL MY LOVE to my proggy friends here in the British Isles and OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY across THE OCEAN. Hug Heart

How is this possible?! Unless you don't know much about them anyway. How many of their albums have you listened in their full length? Or was it some compilation?

Why are you smiling about it? Confused Are you proud of your ignorance?

LOL  I'll spring for a room for you two... only caveat will be it will be videotaped and leaked onto internet.

top 5?  Hard.. for like most people who haven't spent their lives under a rock or are a f**king kid just getting into music..  Led Zeppelin has probably been the most played, heard and thus overexposed band in the universe.. and without the quality and eclectism of the Beatles to offset it.

the first two are no brainers.. for they are sort of outlyiers stylistically.. thus still sound fresh as opposed to much of their stuff.

1.... by lightyears..  have heard it a 1000 times..  and still sounds fresh.  IMO by FAR their best song..
Battle of Evermore

2. yeah that song..
Carouselambra. Much like BoE.. a very unique song in their catalog and with a droning hynotic style I would have liked to have seen them explore further if they had continued as a band.

3. In the Light
4. Communication Breakdown
5. oh why not...  it does rule.  Dazed and Confused.

I had not heard of it, either. But that's because it's on In Through The Out Door, an album I heard once when it was first released, and never bothered with it since.

I don't have any studio albums by Led Zeppelin, but I do have four double CD compilation albums, so that covers just about every song Led Zeppelin have ever recorded, apart from "Carouselambra", obviously.  Smile

I'm sure you're right. I'll buy the Led Zep studio albums too if I happen to see them at a bargain price. I have at least eighty Led Zeppelin songs on my four 2-CD compilations, although admittedly, some of the songs are repeated four times over. Smile

Too many to choose from!

1. "Whole Lotta Love"
2. "Stairway to Heaven"
3. "The Song Remains the Same"
4. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"
5. "No Quarter"

Could easily supplant any of the above:
"Heartbreaker"
"Tangerine"
"The Battle of Evermore"
"When the Levee Breaks"
"Kashmir"
"Ten Years Gone"

1. The Rain Song

3. Celebration Day
4. Stairway to Heaven
5. Ramble On

This is off the top of my head. It's possible I'd feel differently if I really spent time thinking about it.

1.  In the evening
2.  In the Light
3.  The Rover
4. Kashmir
5. Carousalembra

Other than Kashmir I realize these aren't your typical LZ tunes but the reason I chose them is because they aren't overplayed like most of the others. Call me unconventional. :P I realize ITTOD is possibly their most hated album but I like it.

Some alternates:

Stairway to heaven (still a great song)
The Lemon Song
The Rain Song
What is and what should never be
Ten Years Gone

yeah..  I should have made a place for What Is and What Should Never Be.  Always been one of my Zep favorites.. says enough on how little I listen to them anymore that I completely forgot about it. LOL

I'm not that much of a Led Zeppelin fan (at times it's a bit too "testosterone"-like for me), but I do like them and listen to them from time to other. Here is an attempt:

1 "Thank You" (II)
2 "The Battle of Evermore" (IV)
3 "Dazed and Confused" (I)
4 "Ramble On" (II)
5 "No Quarter" (Houses of the Holy)

And of course "Stairway to Heaven" is a great song, it is just overexposed.

- Kashmir.
- Achilles Last Stand.
- Stairway to Heaven.
- No Quarter.
- Since I've been loving you.

I've always had trouble getting into "Since I've been loving you" for some reason. Not sure why. Maybe it's too bluesy for me or something. That said I still think the weakest track on 3 is "hats off to Harper." That's even more of a "head scratcher" for me.

Take the first five in the order presented

No Quarter
Dazed & Confused (though it's stolen)
Babe, I'm Gona Leave You (but it's not theirs either)
Battle of Evermore
Black Dog
Rock'n Roll
Since I've been loving You (a cover of some kind or is it another theft, though not identified yet?)
Stairway To Heaven (also stolen)
How many more times (also not theirs)
Gallow's Pole (not theirs either)
Whole Lotta Love (again a theft)
Achilles Last Stand
In the Light
Nobody's Fault But Theirs (yeah, right!!)
Thank You (but no thanks)

For me it's great, exactly because of how bluesy it is. I don't really know all that much blues, but for what little I know, it is my favourite blues song (yeah, I know, real blues fans would say it's heresy).

This is a tough one for sure.  Especially since it changes a lot for me.  I'll go with this list:

1. Tangerine
2. Achilles Last Stand
3. The Rain Song
4. The Song Remains the Same
5. Dazed and Confused.

Funny that my favorite album is Physical Graffiti, yet none of the songs from that album are on the top 5.   Hmmmm.......

For me, Sagi’s list is ever so close, but no cigar !! Just replace The Song remains....with Stairway and that’s my top-5 - though I am not the fan I used to be of these guys. I only kept some of their LP’s and don’t spin them often anymore.

It's always interesting how these polls turn out. They hardly ever go the way I expected. I thought Stairway to Heaven would win this poll easily, but it's already dropped to 2nd place behind Kashmir. Here's the latest Top 5 round-up, with Chopper's votes added:-

I'd leave No Quarter as their proggiest.
Last Stand would be in the top 5 for sure.
Kashmir is too repetititititive to be really prog (unlike Stairway, which an amazing crecendo, even if stolen from Spirit), and so is Carouselambra.

Okay, I'll try not to cheat. My choices are definitely in my personal top ten for Led Zeppelin so I'm not reaching too much.

5. Ramble On
Early adventuorous years - laid back guitar, Plant at his peak, misty production and a pinch of Tolkien. What's not to like. Sounds like pretty much any idea LZ came up with in 1968-73 span was gold. Really love the buildup, fantastic game of contrasts and JPJ setting the scene.
4. When the Levee Breaks
Incredible how powerful and epic a 4-man rock band can be.
3. Dazed and Confused
Album version is terrific, but I decided to include it for live extravaganza. TSRTS version is best known and goes on for 27 minutes or so, with no filler whatsoever (imo)... but pretty much any recording I know of was a highlight. Right at the Led Zeppelin's catalogue heart.
2. No Quarter
Wish they'd done more of this. Ominous atmosphere, unique tones and effects, lovely piano part; and Bonham, thunderous and idiosyncratic - as always. Not often Led Zeppelin tried to paint nightscape terrors, but when they did, results were chilling.

I'd like to say that LZ had at least 10 more legendary songs under their belt, with In My Time of Dying, Since I've Been Loving You and Achilles leading the charge, but we can't have everything right.

1. Stairway to Heaven
I can't think of any other song that I've been trying to "preserve" as much as this one. It's like, I'm not even listening to it once a year nowadays, but man, Stairway is everywhere. Still it doesn't mean the song isn't life changing in its beauty and emotion. I believe every single detail is laid out perfectly, the thoughtful articulation, incredible vocals, haunting 12-string laden "choruses" and buildup to the cosmic solo.
I'd pay real money to "feel" it as much as I did 15 or 20 years ago. No. 1, well deserved.

How is this possible?! Unless you don't know much about them anyway. How many of their albums have you listened in their full length? Or was it some compilation?

I don't have any studio albums by Led Zeppelin, but I do have four double CD compilation albums, so that covers just about every song Led Zeppelin have ever recorded, apart from "Carouselambra", obviously.  Smile

well, you are missing on a lot of great songs.
I'm happy to tell you that I'm now the proud owner of four Led Zeppelin studio albums, having picked them all up recently at a bargain price of £2 each from a charity shop:- Led Zeppelin; Led Zeppelin II; Houses of the Holy: & Physical Graffiti

For Zep I tend to think more in terms of performances than songs, the real magic was live.   No Quarter for its depth and continual evolution, the explorations in Whole Lotta Love & DaC, the smoldering minor blues of Since I've Benn Loving You.

As for compositions, they peaked in '75 with Phyz.

I want for all of us to just pause for a brief moment of reflection to point out which album has the most songs from this poll. You all have, in a roundabout way, proved my point that Zoso is by far the greatest LZ album. Hey! You said it with this poll! Not me!

Wow!!! How can you NOT have any Led Zeppelin studio albums.....oh wait I don't own any Beatles studio albums, but that's a better reason than not having LZ studio albums as I don't like bubble gum pop music. Like many I have original LZ records, CDs and the 2014 remastered issues, Zeppelin is 100% better on records hearing Bonham and John Paul Jones thick beefy rhythm section is eargasm from my turntable....

My choices:
1. Achilles Last Stand
2. Stairway to Heaven
3. Kashmir
4. No Quarter
5. When the Levee Breaks

(No 'Bring it on home'?
No 'Dancing days'?
Shocked LOL)

Mine are mostly IV with one from II.

1) Stairway to heaven
2) Four sticks
3) Misty Mountain Hop
4) Bring it on home
5) Battle of Evermore

What is and what should never be
Dancing days

How many more times
Celebration Day
Rain song
The rover
The Ocean
Ten years gone
In my time of dying
The song remains the same

(Whoaa..!  have you heard the "rough mix with vocal" version of 'Whole Lotta Love'?  was hearing to 'Bring it on home' and it comes after..  the guitar sounds much more clear!)
