I’m voting for Supper’s Ready, but I’m certain CTTE will take the prize here.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

As with these seemingly impossible choices, I always go for the one I heard first... but my all time favourite is ELP's Karn Evil 9

Suppers Ready from the list.

But Salisbury by Uriah Heep and Flight by Rare Bird are epics that I think take a lot of beating (part 1 - As Your Mind Flies By has some of the best keyboards on any album).

ending of Suppers Ready is beyond epic--but I love both of these equally --the artistry is fantastic--think they are examples of give 5 genius players the same type of instrumentation and they come up with totally different yet totally original and epic--but voted for Suppers Ready.

Supper's Ready is more epic than Close to the Edge, but not necessarily better, so I won't vote.

This poll is too Close to the Edge to call, but I'm Going for the One and only YES! Smile

Thick as a Brick is more than an epic, is a whole album, so I think it should not be here, but it gets my vote anyways. CTTE and SP are fantastic on themselves, hard to pick one over the other.

How can CTTE or SR be more epic than a 45 minute track?!! I don't like TAAB better than the other two but by sheer length alone it's more epic.

I can't disagree with your logic. I've listened to some 5 minute epics which wouldn't qualify here.

Thick As A Brick should take this for length alone, but nothing is more epic than Apocalypse in 9/8. Close To The Edge is very epic as well, but then it's...

Hey babe, your supper's waiting for you,
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true?

That entire section has some of Gabriel's best, most descriptive lyrics EVER.

Actually, I'm going to throw a much maligned epic into the mix, which I think is the most epic of all.
Grendel - (and please - no "it's a Suppers Ready clone" because it is patently completely different in mood).
It's based on the greatest Old English epic poem of all, and wonderfully interpreted.

Even if one doesn't like the music, its epicness can't be denied. For example, the dynamics of the music ranges from almost silence to a sonic density that is quite impenetrable.

I find it interesting that Close To The Edge has far fewer votes than it would get in a poll about preferences. Evidently, voters are voting on the basis of epicness, and in particular that Close To The Edge is not regarded as particularly epic, in spite of its greatness.

The I get Up, I get Down section of CttE is very epic too, specially in it's Symphonic version. I was thinking about throwing Zarathustra from Museo Rosenback into the mix too

I thought about this and with consideration of what epic means .. meaning constant replay value and a timeless state of epic proportions I voted for Close to The Edge, for me that is so well arranged without any awkward moments the other two do have a few awkward moments, Close to The Edge is the clear winner here , I love all three but if I was showing somebody new to prog a timeless epic Close to The Edge is the one I'd select to play for them. Close to The Edge feels organic where as the other two seem to be a little forced in style, its man made verses nature really and nature wins every time for me. Genesis will win this poll I`m not expecting other people to agree with my point of view, however it is my honest feelings  Smile

Ignoring the poll choices, Gates Of Delirium and Karn Evil are about tied for me and then comes Suppers Ready. TAAB never fees that epic to me and neither does CTTE. They are too episodic and lack the fantastic finale that Suppers Ready has. Other ones I like include IQ - The Last Human Gateway and all of the second disc of Dream Theater's Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. The Knight Of The North by Glass Hammer and Par Lindh Project - Mundus Incompertus also deserve a mention.

Obviously epic means how long something can be drawn out. Then its John Cage's As Slow As Possible. Next chord change in 18 months. It's 639 years long.

https://universes.art/en/specials/john-cage-organ-project-halberstadt

I just want to hear the single from the album version, assuming this is the album version.

Betcha the B side is Silence

We still wait the reviews.

By the time it's finished so should Covid19.

And I thought a 2 metre long CD compilation of the Bayreuth Festival was epic...

This reminds me of a series of polls I did all called "Which is the (band) epic?". I believe I did them on Rush, Pink Floyd and Yes.
Went for the obvious winner... Supper's Ready.

Supper's Ready is definitely the most epic. However, I think that Close to the Edge is simply the best song on the list.

Easily Thick as a Brick. It's twice as long, the composition and arrangement is absolutely incredible, and in general it's an outstanding album.
