Have you ever wondered what it would be like hear the sound of the Tubular Bells chiming at sunrise on top of Hergest Ridge at the Ommadawn of a new day? Looking out to sea from the top of the ridge, you'd be able to see the sun casting its delicate Incantations of light across a calm Platinum silver sea. In the distance, you might be lucky enough to see the QE2 sailing Five Miles Out from Southampton, where the lucky passengers are temporarily escaping the world's Crises by  embarking on a voyage of Discovery to exotic tropical Islands. A voyage aboard a luxury cruise liner promises to be an Earth Moving experience of a lifetime, where you could sail to the exotic island of Amarok in Indonesia, or witness a tropical monsoon when the Heavens Open over Java. It's almost as exotic as the astronauts who journeyed to the Moon aboard gleaming silver rockets, which glinted in the Sun like Tubular Bells II of stainless steel. As the space travellers journeyed into orbit around the Moon, they'd hear The Songs of Distant Earth aboard their Voyager spacecraft. Maybe they'd listen to Tubular Bells III and the distinctive sound of Mike Oldfield's Guitars, whilst the tolling of The Millennium Bell on the album announces the beginning of a new century. The Tres Lunas (or three lunar astronauts) would be travelling between Light + Shade as their spacecraft orbits the Moon, where the Music of the Spheres can be heard across space and time. Maybe one day in the not too distant future, a spacecraft will land a Man on the Rocks of Mars, before the long journey home and a welcome Return to Ommadawn here on Earth. Smile

A lot of albums could be there at #7, see: Platinum, QE2, Tubular II-III-2003, The Songs of Distant Earth Heart, Return to Ommadawn, or maybe even Voyager / Guitars (well that's just a bit of stretch). Great catalogue.

I must have listened to Ommadawn more times than any other Mike Oldfield album. I love Tubular Bells too, although it always sounds slightly sinister to me now, ever since I heard the music featured on The Exorcist. Smile

Hi,

I really like most of his stuff all the way through VOYAGER (1996) ... but since then I have not exactly listened a whole lot, but I did buy one of the newer things, and I was disappointed ... it was nice, but just did not click with me.

The further adventures of Mr. Tubular Bells is not one of my choices of work by MO at all ... I much prefer, AMAROCK, SONGS OF DISTANT EARTH, VOYAGER, OMMADAWN, INCANTATIONS and HERGEST RIDGE.

I would like to see MO try to do something like AMAROK again ... that was an amazingly fun listen, and such a huge finger to folks that wanted something else! We need more "fingers"!

I adore Amarok and would love another one like that. I doubt he's likely to get that pissed off at people again.

I guess if one was lazy, they could just choose Tubular Bells I through VII, or however many times Oldfield rehashed the same idea.

Had to find the time to listen to Ommadawn again to make my list. I only have 7 Oldfield albums (listened to most of the others but they were not worth buying, to my ears). My appreciation goes more to his pop/rock albums than to the others, which explains my list:

1. Five Miles Out
2. Crises
3. Discovery
4. QE2
5. Tubular Bells II
6. Tubular Bells
7. Ommadawn

Although it didn't make my list , I've always liked TB3 which really had very little with the original album other than marketing. That and Tres Lunas are underrated I feel although they are just too close to the 'Ibiza scene' for comfort as far as prog fans are concerned!

it's probably my fave post 1990 Oldfield album, and I agree it barely references the original.  But I do like World music.  I actually quite like Light and Shade as well

Let's see if I can get it right.
1. Ommadawn.
2. Tubular Bells.
3. Hergest Ridge.
4. Incantations.
5. Return to Ommadawn.
6. Songs from Distant Earth.
7. I'm not sure, it might be one that I haven't heard yet, but right now I think I should go with Tubular Bells 3.

Really? I mean, it's the original Tubular Bells, then the orchestral Tubular Bells, which I understand should be just about the same one but with orchestra (and without Mike if I remember correctly, because he wasn't up to playing live yet by then and the record company had to do this anyway), then some live versions of Tubular Bells with Mike Oldfield himself, then Tubular Bells 2 which very closely follows the same path of the original, playing equivalents of every piece on the original but (for me) mostly of lesser quality (like they were done so for the sake of copying his original), then Tubular Bells 2003, which is the very original Tubular Bells re-recorded (and that's actually the one I have, not the original one). And then there's Tubular Bells 3, which is indeed a new work in it's own right for a change, and has some really beautiful moments indeed.

ballsy decision to avoid the first four albums

I would expect Amarok to be doing a bit better in the poll , even Oldfield thinks it's his best album!

It's not that I meant to leave any good ones out, it's more I'm still behind on his discography. It looks like Ommadawn might have to be my next listen.

Not to worry. It's no Crises if you're unable to take part in the poll, but Mike Oldfield has recorded more Platinum albums than most, so maybe it's time to be a Voyager of Discovery. Wink

Adele and Taylor Swift both have won many music awards and sold big but I don't buy their albums either.

And Mike is, ofc, very well worth a listen beyond Tubular Bells and Ommadawn.
