Hey guys (and members from the other and middling ends of the spectrum)!

I just got back from a nice vacation/road trip on which I listened to ONLY music from the 2010s. It was awesome. Thus, the recent Polls on PA that I've been posting using the title "Reviewing the 2010s."

My problem is that I have had trouble generating drummers and bass players. If you have any suggestions, I'd LOVE it and GREATLY APPRECIATE your help!

My only parameters are that they debuted and/or blossomed in the 2010s and that they've appeared on at least two albums

Here's my first suggestion (drummers): John Hargett

Not exactly sure what you are looking for but I know Marco Minnerman has been involved with a bunch of projects. (The Aristocratics, Levin Minnemann Rudess)  as for bass players, maybe Tony Levin's Stickmen

Also Jojo Mayer has done some really cool drum/ bass projects and Simon Phillips band "Protocol" is also very good.

I think the 2010s will be tough, in the prog category unless it is really obscure. I can't think of any band right now off my head that started in 2010s with a prolific drummer on two albums.

I've never heard of your examples.

Would you consider someone like Torstein Lofthus in Elephant9?  He was in The Shining in the 00's, and Elephant9 had their first album in 2008, but he is pretty good.

I'm really looking for YOUNG musicians/drummers--those who have come into the public eye in the this past decade. Thus, Marco (age 50), Jojo (age 57), Tony age 74), and Simon (age 63) won't work. Thanks for trying!

I really like Torstein's drumming--and the Elephant9 albums, but the dude is 43 and really had a career launch in the 2000s--like Mark Heron, Ricard "Huxflux" Nettermalm, and the Mars Volta drummers. I'm looking for drummers who actually came into their own in the 2010s.

The only other drummer who immediately popped into my head was AMAZING drummer from INGRANAGGI DELLA VALLE, Shanti Colucci:

I liken him to "the new Bill Bruford."

How about Stewart Marshall from The Fierce and the Dead?  They are better known for Matt Stevens' guitar playing  but since you are looking for a drummer from the '10's.

I thought about mentioning this one before, but I had remembered that you know the band already. Daniele Di Giovanni of Homunculus Res.

Good drummer, but I guess it don't think of it so much as drums 'n bass on the whole even though it has bass.

Thanks, Greg! As much as I love the quirky music of HR, Daniele's great drumming has never been the kind that wow's me as much as the unpredictable rhythmic and signature changes that he builds into all of the band's compositions. It's like driving on a getaway scene on a motocycle through the streets and alleyways of a mediĉval city! (Like Palermo?!)

Arguably John Douglas (Anathema) blossomed in the 2010's. Here he is with a track he wrote. This is just great as a piece of music perhaps rather than amazing drumming but please have a watch.

Matt Halpern from Periphery is my favorite 2010's bloomer. He takes the technicality of extreme metal but still manages to work it into an infectious and accessible groove.

I'm VERY impressed with these young fellows!  Gabriel Severn is a rising star on bass guitar, I connected him to Percy Jones (an old friend) and Percy wrote this to Gabriel via his mom, Vivian:

Charles, please pass this on.          Hi Vivian, Your Son has a lot of talent, really good chops and intonation at such a young age. I was still working on my shoe laces at that age. I hope he keeps it up,  sooner or later he will inevitably start developing a style of his own, so that's going to be an  exciting experience.    Percy.

I also really enjoy this young drummer (Vinny Aguas) he has some great Brand X-style chops!!  Sorry, I don't think they have begun any serious recording efforts yet!

That was awesome! Love the guitar lead looped in the middle, love Lee's voice, and love the entrance/arrival of the orchestra at the two-thirds mark. (I get it:  Not really a drum display song.)

I reckon few had heard (about) Raymond Hearne (Haken) before 2010 but of course the band's demo is from 2008, so I don't know if you want to count him in. Amazing drummer on stage holding it together and adding stuff to the studio editions while the rest of the band is just keeping up their parts...

Brann Dailor is the most important drummer the past two decades hes way of using the snare and hes developing of grooves is quite complex. Also Mario Duplantier is the most amazing drummer the past 15 to 20 years

Hi,

Diagonal is very enjoyable and impressive.

Xavi Reija (in this piece) reminds me of a lot of the ECM styled things, and yeah, it is really good ... although I kinda thought that Tony Levin did not quite mesh as well here ... but was still nice to hear. Tony, for my ears, is more of a rock bass player than he is a jazz/spacey kind of player, although he has a pretty good ear for it ... but I think he often lacks the quietness in the playing of his bass, to add something to the music over all. Just a feeling and thought ... Tony is, of course one of the "masters" out there ... !!!

Hi,

Not a single drummer that knows how to use his kit without over doing the snare drum!

I still say ... I wanna rip that thing on a drummer's head and have him wear it as a nice piece of clothing!

Somewhere along the way, a drummer has to learn when not to count time and not use the snare drum ... only high schoolers live on with the snare because they are learning how to count ... but if you can't count without TELLING YOURSELF that this is 4 ... and then ... 4 ... and then ... 4 ...

it's the difference between "music" and "mechanics". Sadly, there aren't enough teachers heling these folks past the mechanics!

Once again I have no idea what you're talking about...over doing the snare? it's like saying a guitar playing is over doing the high e string.
Yes there are technical drummers in the world and in a lot of cases it goes well with the music, and there are also tons of flowing, creative or whatever drummers out there.
You're always using the word "music" in a sense that you are the only one who really understands what's good and what is not around here, you're not. Get over it.

The first drummer popped to mind is really one of the best I've ever heard and I can go on and on about what he's all about, Dan Mayo from the amazing and overlooked band Tatran.
Check out this track from their first album released in 2014, I love that the core of the song is his drums solo but there's also a lot more to it.
