Topic: Modern/New Prog Poll 1: Debut Albums

Subject: Modern/New Prog Poll 1: Debut Albums
Date Posted: September 30 2020 at 12:03
All bands start somewhere, usually with a debut album - so I've chosen debut albums as the subject of the first modern/new prog* poll, which I hope will become one of many.
I promised this poll, firstly because there was a request for album polls, secondly because I still feel discussion of modern prog is scarce due to (in my opinion) people obsessing over old stuff. That's not bad, I do it too, but it gets a bit annoying when you see the 51st Pink Floyd poll, the 80th Genesis appreciation thread... you get the idea. I hope this will change in course of time. Anyway, I'll stop rambling...
These debuts are generally what I would consider "the cream of the crop", they are all by at least fairly good bands. Most of them are about 2012-ish but two are 2009, and one is as early as 2019. And they're mostly different sub-genres. So, a fairly varied choice.
Off you go! Tongue

*In case you're wondering why I always call it "Modern/New" prog, Wikipedia calls it new and most people here call it modern, so it's a combination. Wink

Was going to vote for them until I decided Thank You Scientist was better.
Then I remembered I listed Aquarius on the list. Wink

TYS easy. BTW, the Sanguine Hum debut was Songs for Days released on iTunes in 2007. It was released as a CD in 2016, with additional songs. What we Ask is Where we Begin. Also, TYS debut was an EP.

Cool poll. Keep the modern prog talk going.

True - I meant debut albums, I'll change the OP.

"Every Night Something Happens, Lost Crowns - 2019" is an amazing album and gets my vote.

Favourite track: Sound As Colour

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

My avatar shows why I'm not scared of any cat. 20cm of Senegal Fighting Parrot that has sorted out a couple of cats who thought "dinner". And, on one occasion, she sorted out my ear and my finger: I bribed her back into her cage with an illicit treat, then ate it myself. 6 hours later, I let her out and 30s later, I looked like a victim in the Texas Chainsaw Massacres. I honour deals with her now.
In the poll, I chose Aquarius, but the I am the Morning debut is also very good.

Cristi's cat is the bane of his enemies...
Glad you voted for Aquarius! I'm regretting including Iamthemorning, they've out voted the others completely. I had no idea they were that popular.

Yes! I'm not the only one who likes Haken! Thumbs Up
A Crimson Mellotron - I deliberately made the choice varied, so most people would at least know one of these albums. Wink

Without question, ~
One of the most refreshing and totally out-of-the-blue debut albums of the 21st Century.

iamthemorning is really good......but Haken easily gets my vote. This album and The Mountain are what keep me hoping they will return to that flavor of music and leave the thrash metal to others.

Looks like Iamthemorning has beaten Haken to it over a margin of one point.
