As a follow up to my PT songs poll...
I'm voting for Fear - In Absentia or Deadwing is probably the best album as a whole, but Fear is like a continuous piece on its own - like one big magnum opus, which does it for me. The Sky Moves Sideways is similar, and another favourite and Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are great, and the Incident and Signify - well, they're all great albums. Except maybe On the Sunday of Life... Wink
So what say you?

I'm just recently checking out this group finally. I've been working my way through their discography, but I've thoroughly listened to all these studio recordings. I'm having trouble really getting into the psych/space rock early outings, as I tend to get bored. I'm sure they will get more appealing over time (they already have really). I was surprisingly underwhelmed with In Absentia based on how highly it is spoken of (though it was still awesome). So it's a tough choice between Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun. I suppose I'll go Deadwing.

I hope so, I think it's their most masterful album, if you know what I mean. Fear is just better.

I think it's good someone started this poll. As odd as it may sound I really don't think Porcupine Tree shows up in poll's as much as they should. Maybe people are starting forget about them. Not sure.

Yikes. Tough poll. Ok, Deadwing but it could have easily have been anyone of 4 others.

Each album has something enjoyable but I'll go with The Sky Moves Sideways for its consistency in dreamlike soundscapes and ever growing through every listen.

This is tough.....Top to bottom the catalog is uber strong. Came down to Signify and Fear Of A Blank Planet. Chose the latter and partly because of the awesome title and homage to Public Enemy.

I felt people were beginning to forget about them myself, which is why I made the poll. If prog's not dead, PT's not dead. What did you vote for?
There is a lot of variation in choices here. I would have thought the Sky Moves Sideways would have more votes though. I don't mind, my favourite's winning! Tongue

Deadwing and In Absentia, voted Deadwing, followed by their earlier stuff. I don't really get the love for Fear; after the awesome Deadwing and In Absentia for me it was a massive disappointment.

well Recordings is a compilation of b-sides, alt-versions to some songs.

Metanoia is a studio album from 1998.
On PA it's listed under Singles/EPs/Fan Club/Promo, released in 2001, but it's got 56 minutes ConfusedLOL

I never realized this but I consider all PT albums from Signify to The Incident to be absolutely equal. That's 7 straight albums. I don't think that I can say that about any other prog artist. Shocked

Porcupine Tree were just a great band all round, I seriously can't think of anything wrong with them. I reckon all their albums from Up the Downstair to The Incident are superb.

The Incident for me, by far...a contrary opinion to be sure, but Progheads should always be in the musical minority.

My favourite is Up The Downstair (the original version), but I think the best is The Sky Moves Sideways.
I never really warmed up to Fear of a Blank Planet, it's one of the least interesting for me, along with The Incident.

I agree about Fear......nothing on that lp is memorable to me. Good solid playing and production but the songs are simply not 'catchy'. And The Incident has similar issues also.

Beats me....I've been into PT since Sky Moves Sideways and bought all of the studio and compilations...etc...
I was disappointed in Fear....also in Lifeson's and Fripp's contributions such as they are.

Those of us who understand Latin (or went on Google Translate) will know that approximately translates as "On tastes, there is no dispute". Or at least, I think it translates as that, my Latin is a little rusty.
As for Fear, it is, I think, the result of an ex-psychedelic rock band trying to broaden themselves to headbanging metal horizons, even inviting two old musicians who helped make prog metal what it is,and putting it all in a marvellous concept album. A masterpiece for some, for others, a ruinous downfall. Maybe not so ruinous though, it was their most successful album at time of release. Wink

Someone’s been reviving the older polls. I always like it when older posts and polls are revived. I would love it if this site didn’t automatically lock posts over time, though I understand there were reasons why this approach was chosen.

My top three PT albums are Sky Moves Sideways > Up The Downstair > The Incident.
