For me, it would be a toss up between Haken, IQ and Between the Buried and Me.
I am curious to see what others will say!

Hard to choose between Leprous, Big Big Train, Airbag, The Pinneaple Thief, Wobbler, Riverside and SW Solo music.

Pete Jones

Big Big Train, Steve Wilson are contenders too

A couple of odd albums stand out here and there...  Bent Knee, IQ, Modern Rock Ensemble, Wobbler, more

Tough one for me as I don't see a particular band jumping head and shoulders above the rest in the decade and most of the bands I'm into released 2 or 3 albums max.

Knifeworld
Guapo
North Sea Radio Orchestra
Alec K Redfearn & The Eyesores
Cheer-Accident
PoiL
Schnellertollermeier
Thinking Plague
Miriodor
Bent Knee

It's probably Bent Knee with 5 albums and having seen them over a dozen times.  Cheer-Accident & Knifeworld would probably make up a top 3.

If I was going to cheat I'd go with the Lyon based music collective Dur Et Doux which includes the bands Poil, Piniol, Ni, Chromb!, Icsis, Le Grand Sbam.

Fortunately, no matter how old farts like me are stuck in the 70s, the show will never end.
Hope one long-hair new band or another will be a discovery for me.

I thought The Flower Kings were a modern prog band. I've heard of Wobbler, but I haven't heard any of their albums. I listen to as many as eight prog albums a day, but that's mainly old-school prog. Smile

Well, many of my favorite albums of the 2010s come from bands who didn't release music in any sort of consistent stream. As far as the artist that I think best represented the prog sound in the 2010s, it would have to be a toss up between Haken, Steven Wilson and Thank You Scientist

My personal favorites would be Wobbler, Opeth and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

A debut in '95 makes them a modern prog band, a band who debuted in '69 and last good album was '77 is not a modern prog band.

Big Big Train, The Psychedelic Ensemble, Bent Knee, Corde Oblique, Steven Wilson, Motorpsycho, Magma, iamthemorning, Thieves' Kitchen, Arnaud Bukwald, and Wobbler are all worthy choices for best band of the 20teens, but I'd have to go with one of the bands that have most occupied my listening time:
Homunculus Res
Alio Die
Battlestations
Cicada (neo-classical Post Rock from Taiwan that has been rejected for submission by PA)
Faun
Ulver
Unaka Prong

These are the artists I have listened to and continue to listen to the most (from that decade). It's a tough choice, but my single favorite band has to be either Homunculus Res or Unaka Prong. The music of both bands makes me so feel so good!

John Zorn.

Kinda cheating since it encompasses at least three different bands that have done seminal avant-prog work in the decade (Moonchild, Simulacrum, Insurrection) as well as multiple ‘solo’ works. But that’s how I roll.

I think that's the point - there are so many prog albums from the last 10 years that are better than the very mediocre Heaven & Earth.

Paul is allowed to have an opinion LOL
personally I do like the the Heaven and Earth album but got bored with Fly From Here very quickly. Both are probably 3 star albums in my book. 'Prog lite' although Paul is not one for prog metal or eclectic prog.

Paul , check out some Lonely Robot or Mute Gods. Both excellent modern day projects that may suit your taste better, and also please stop winding up Cristi Wink

Steven Wilson tops it easily.

Wobbler would’ve been a contender for the top spot if I’d discovered them sooner, but it’s still tough to beat SW. I didn’t love To The Bone, but all his other albums are good.

Others:
Opeth
Riverside
IQ
Thank You Scientist
Jordsjø
Gazpacho
The Pineapple Thief
Soen
Barock Projeckt

I’ve mostly based this on what I’ve listened to the most. The list would have been different if I should list my favorite bands based on the albums released.

Date Posted: December 21 2020 at 09:40
I would say Porcupine Tree, but since their last release was 2009 and we are talking 2010-2019, they don't count.

*Rush would be up there with Clockwork Angels and their final tour, closing the doors on an institution of progressive rock music.
*Riverside starting with Shrine Of New Generation Slaves.

*I'd have to go with The Pineapple Thief as my favorite, starting with the excellent Someone Here Is Missing and finishing with Dissolution.

So maybe I misunderstood the OP question......
  • Any artist (regardless of when they started) who released new material between 2010-2019?
  • Only an artist who began in 2010-2019?
OP listed IQ, so I take it that any artist as long as they released something in 2010-2019, which means Yes would qualify with 2 releases....so prog on with Yes, Paul! Clap

Yes and Renaissance being very important or relevant to the 2010s is like an invitation for sarcasm.

Yes and Renaissance are still important and relevant to me in the 2010's, even if to no one else here, and I'm accustomed by now to being mocked for my eclectic and sometimes bizarre tastes in prog, so no worries on that score. Smile

I'm not mocking you, just disagreeing to something you stated here, that's all.

I've been mocked here more times than the fabled Mock Turtle, but not necessarily by you. Smile

I don't know. I guess it would be something between Steven Wilson and Big Big Train. I also loved Edison's Children a lot, and Georgious released a few really wonderful albums.

And that's how I am taking the OP's question, not so much what band I think had the "best" output in the 2010s. That to me is a different topic altogether.........What's f'ed up about this notion is not a damn person would complain if someone mention the Fab Four as still being relevant in the 2010s, but yet we get our panties all in a wad if someone picks Yes and Renaissance.

My list would be:

The Pineapple Thief
Rush
Riverside
Marillion
Haken
The Flower Kings
Neal Morse

I just disagree that Yes did anything relevant in the 2010s. Or Renaissance for that matter. It's that what panties in a wad means? Good for you, man, good for you.

^ Sorry to be "Captain Obvious" again, but getting your panties in a wad is the American equivalent of getting your knickers in a twist. Smile

To disagree with Paul is fine on his choices, both released music in the 2010s and are relevant to him. Again, had OP stated only bands that started in the 2010s, which I think most were siding with, then his knickers or panties would be up his wad........LOL

Part of that decade I was on hiatus and missed out on some stuff. My tastes have changed over that time too, but some of the newer stuff I like now I haven't had the chance to go backwards into the 2010s to assess. So with that caveat in mind, I think I'm going to pick a not so well known Italian symphonic prog band called Conqueror with the excellent keyboardist and singer Simona Rigano.

I think The Tangent, Izz, and Spock's Beard also had a pretty good run of albums during that time period.

Once I get around to assessing the stuff I missed, I very much expect to have a different answer when the question comes up in the future.

To answer the question honestly I'd have to give it to bands who have improved over the journey of the 2010's, not bands who have either stayed the same or gone backwards. That eliminates a lot of bands I like. So that leaves:
Big Big Train (with Dave Gregory and David Longdon)
Spock's Beard (with Ted Leonard)
Steven Wilson
Steve Hackett
IQ
Dream Theater (with the new drummer)
Flying Colors
Opeth
Anathema
The Flower Kings (with the new drummer and keyboard player)

My personal favorite is Riverside. I first heard them in 2014 and I saw them live in 2019.
