High Hopes!!! The only Pink Floyd song that I'm a fan of.

"Sleepwalking back again" Wink

High hopes is an unintentional and unfortunate epitaph for the album.  Kind of sums it up. If you expected that now, with the band settled down as a full unit again, they would fire on all cylinders, you'd be sorely disappointed.

It is however a better outing than Momentary Lapse of Reason.  It is reasonably consistent and has some strong outings.  Overall, the problem at root is still the same lack of ambition that drags down Lapse.  It's just too soft and polite for a Floyd album, end of the day.  Neither the mystery and enigma of Meddle/DSOTM nor the menace and bite of Animals/Wall.  Just a bunch of songs being played by a band seemingly for no other reason but to 'prove' Waters wrong; I mean, spiting Waters seems to be the theme informing a bunch of songs on the album.

Clearly its the transition album to the end. Planned or not it set up for a nice album ending career for Pink Floyd coupled with Endless River.
The whole album has a certain early Floydian vibe with the soundscapes and all. As well one of the top tier productions for Pink Floyd also.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the album and the tour was fantastic.

I think that the lads we're indeed motivated and that the album has many good high points. It's no DSotM or Animals naturally, but the lyrics have a certain down beat English-ness to them that does fit the band, even if they are missing Waters' vitriol.

Good background music when talking with friends or having a nice dinner if you don't want to be disturbed.
But then Animals and the Wall were the last things that really mattered even if those were more about Waters ego and solo ambitions... though Gilmour et al contributed great playing.

For me it's their best album since Animals. It's just three old friends making music together and with nothing to prove (for better or worse). There's a sense of unity in the band that lacked for quite some time.

What Do You Want From Me? Well, I could start by saying that it's good to see interest In Pink Floyd Coming Back to Life again, as I know how we like to Keep Talking about one of our favourite bands. I've noticed how featured Pink Floyd albums usually appear in a Cluster. One of my favourite Pink Floyd albums has always been The Division Bell, which is Poles Apart from my least favourite Pink Floyd album, Ummagumma. When The Division Bell was released in 1994, I had High Hopes for the album. it was also A Great Day for Freedom, as it marked the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa and the beginning of Nelson Mandela's premiership,  having spent 27 long years Marooned on Robben Island, which must have been very Wearing. The Inside Out of it is that I prefer The Division Bell over Dark Side of the Moon, which I know will probably leave you Lost For Words, but I can't Take It Back now. Wink

Don’t worry, Paul. You’re not alone - I, too, prefer The Division Bell to DSotM. 👍🏻

It's good to know I'm not Alone in the Universe in preferring The Division Bell over Dark Side of the Moon. Smile

It is a strange one this. When it first came out and for quite some time afterwards, I thought that it was right up there with the traditionally valued classics like Wish you here, Animals and the Wall. But somehow as the years have gone by it seems to have increasingly lost something. Whereas DSOTM has never, ever lost anything for me. I love it at least as much as I first did and possibly even more.

I also prefer it over Dark Side. It would be number 3, just after Wish you were Here and Animals. Perhaps it's because it was one of my first album from them (even though I got The Wall first, and I don't like it as much). I just find every song really beautiful, even though it's indeed got a few that stand out. And yeah, High Hopes was the best Swan Song any band could hope to have... until they released The Endless River, and now their Swan Song is a rather forgettable song.

I quite like The Division Bell. Not near their best work, but a nice farewell (until The Endless River). It’s more of a relaxing album to me and has gotten a few plays.

I'm listening to the album, the words of "Wearing the Inside Out" really hurt, living alone and barely getting out of the house for so long because of you know what Disapprove

A nice, little album that can be played in the background low during spring cleaning.

Not a bad album. Can't say I bother with it these days, but it gave me some pleasure when t came out. High Hopes is a great song.

Yep, that pretty much describes how i feel about it. The 'buzz' around its release and the concerts felt special at the time...

That was the final tour. I persuaded my wife to go (she wasn't a fan!) and she finally agreed, even though we had tickets for a Wednesday, which was a work day for both of us, and thus a total pain to get to Earls Court.

I just kept telling her she would love the show. Wednesday 12th October arrives and we make it to the gig. Lights go down, and there's a deep rumbling. Wow, she thinks, that IS impressive. Lights then come back up to show a section of seating has collapsed. After a few minutes of confusion, Harvey Goldsmith comes on stage to tell us the concert is cancelled but is scheduled for what was supposed to be a rest day instead, which of course is a Monday and another work day. After a weekend of grief about going through all the hassle again, we finally get back to Earls Court on the Monday and she's completely blown away. Since then, we must have seen Aussie Floyd 10 times, and they're almost a perfect substitute.

Wow! Yes I remember the seating collapse in the news. I was at Earls Court too, but can't remember which night. That was the first gig that I went to where smoking was banned. Back in the cheap seats where we were, the smell of weed was still strong.
