As you are probably aware, the Floyd didn't release any singles in the UK between 'Point Me at the Sky' (1968) and 'Another Brick in the Wall, part 2' (1979). Personally I think that most of their albums contain a 'single that never was'. So just for fun, which of these tracks would be your choice, and why?

[Singles released in other territories in these intervening years may or may not have been sanctioned by the band.]

Yes indeed in other territories - I'm sticking with their UK discography for the purposes of the topic.

Nice idea - it's between Summer 68, One of these days, and Time. Today I'm voting Summer 68 (I don't expect this to pick up as many votes as the others), but on other days I could vote for the other two.

Wish You Were Here. I'm actually quite surprised it was never released as a single especially considering how popular it's become over the years.

I don't understand why they have never officially released Embryo. It's a great song which I suspect was about to go on Atom Heart Mother and was replaced by Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast.

If it was for me I'd chosen Embryo instead.

I read in a magazine long ago that the song was not released because of some sort of censorship back then, nevertheless the band played the song live first couple of years of the 70s.

One of These Days I'm going to vote for a track from the Meddle album other than "Echoes", and today's the day. Smile

Have a Cigar is nowhere near my favourite Floyd song included in this poll, but I think it is the one that would have made the best single from this lot. It has single written all over it. If I ever heard Floyd on my local rock radio station, it was almost always Cigar. Even more so, after Foo Fighters and Brian May covered it.

Summer '68 maybe Radio edit an edit to make the "Goodbye to you" section snappier for the listeners.

I remember that Free Four was actually released as a single in 1972, as well as a shortened version of Money (with Any Colour You Like as the B-side). My own choice would be Stay (Obscured by Clouds): I think the song is fit for a single and it is laid back and beautiful. From this list I'd pick The Nile Song: this one really kicks in.

The band were playing it live for quite some time so it was well known and loved but were never quite happy with the studio versions they recorded then the Harvest label put it on the 'Breath of Fresh air' compilation without the band's agreement and i think that pushed Roger Waters (in his annoyance) to shelve it completely.

I agree that Cymbaline would have made a great single as would 'Green is the colour' or 'The narrow way part 3' (as per the way it was played live).

I guess Wish you were Here (with Time very close). Though I would personally have trouble choosing between these two and One of These Days.

'Time' is very mood music, it always with me in the bathtub after a hard day, for me it's one of the best songs when it takes me on my thoughts. But i would also like to pick 'Us and Them' - this saong reminds me about the race of today's world.

One Of These Days although I could easily have picked nearly anything else!

Of this list, Wish You were Here. I would have probably voted for Stay, from Obscured by Clouds.

A difficult choice, but my vote just went to 'Free Four' a jaunty almost upbeat rocker, so quite a Floydian rarity! And of course it contains themes which would be explored further on The Wall and Final Cut.
