We all know the guy who sat in the best-loved engineer/producer chair of the history of prog. Please, 3 votes per chin only (and a penny for your thoughts).
This was inspired by the posts of SteveG on the subject of sound engineering.

ELP's debut is my favourite out of these but I think I prefer the production on those Yes albums from '72 onwards, Relayer especially.

ELP debut. It has a wonderful musicality for such a detailed sound mix.

A ver qué sale de esto, viejo...Let's see if Eddy is ready or not.

Tarkus gets one vote for sure.
Then I'm going to go full Yes with Tales and The Yes Album, because I feel like it.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

You guys gotta learn to take out the obvious go-to choices if you want these polls to spice up a bit!

Take out CTTE and Tarkus here for some real honesty!

My favourite one is TFTO but clearly the highest rated one is CTTE.

Are we talking just favourite album or best production out of these?

For production/clarity of sound I would go for Trilogy, for best album Close To The Edge.

Tarkus, The yes album , Fragile and Drama

Tarkus (1971), narrowly over Close to the Edge (1972).

Good point: I think the production quality must come first in this poll (if one can distinguish it from the musicians performance).

I thought that problem would be solved by the triple vote, but it seems that many people voted for CTTE and nothing more. Strange...

As a 'desk jockey' myself I have to go with ELP Trilogy for engineering. It is an amazingly engineered album.

Followed closely by...
Close to the edge
Tarkus
Fragile

Picked 'Relayer' because it doesn't get as many votes and is a killer album. Also for 'Close to the Edge' and 'Drama' - simply classics. Could have easily voted for any of these, to be honest.
But man, how much I hate the multiple vote option... Always abused, and this is why I never allow it on my polls.

How do you know when an album is 'amazingly engineered', I am honestly asking because I do not know. I know how you could call an album 'well-produced' or even 'amazingly produced', and I presume it is similar to being engineered... Whatever it is, just don't weld it, won't look good. Tongue

The engineer is the one who mixes and matches, equalizes, adds some effects, manages the soundboard...the producer is the one who comes afterwards and f**ks the record up!

Yessongs didn't have a vote yet but if I were told that I'm only allowed to own one of these, it'd be Yessongs for sure.

LOL True enough, but when they are one and the same, it's harder to point the finger.
For my part I see the producer as more of a 'director', deciding on style and perhaps instrumentation of the song as well as coaching the musicians on performance ("give it more wangy tangy and a little slide just there"). The engineer is the executioner of the required activities in order to achieve the vision of the producer (and band)
It's what you end up hearing !

A record producer is a) someone who suggests the addition of wonky instruments, vocals and arrangements or b) someone who discourages the addition of wonky instruments, vocals and arrangements. And c) someone who suggusts the addition of brilliant instruments, vocals and arrangements. Quite a choice.
