This should have been the genesis of the dual 1978 duo poll duels. Another apples and oranges one with National Health having a higher average rating but the Genesis album having about three and a half as many times the ratings of NH. I have and like both albums, although I do prefer National Health.

This is one Genesis album that I’ve defended more than once — and that’s just with Ivan. I think it has some very good songs.

Oh, by the way, In case anyone checking out this poll is not familiar with both, here is a favourite of mine from each:

Those have both been favourite tracks of mine at different times.

Oof, this is making me feel bad because ATTW3 is an album with a definite place in my heart and which I think gets unjustly dismissed a lot, but... it can't beat the Health.

Genesis by far. More in tune with my tastes.

The NH album is ok, but overall too jazzy for my ears. I rarely listen to it.

Bought those much anticipated albums on release - and saw both bands that year!!  Time has been kindest to NH - the long fade out to the album is the stuff of dreams...(poor little Nemo)

Genesis --it has some great songs and is missing one thing--Hackett--to add the fairy dust he adds---even Banks admits it would have been better with Steve on it.

Gonna have to relisten to National Health. I really like both these records, i've always been a big defender of ATTWT. If it was squared against Of Queues and Cures it would go to National Health.

Like both of these albums, but NH is the better of the two.

Not gonna choose. I probably enjoy the Genesis more frequently than the Health (actually, roughly half the songs are fantastic- the other half I can do without), but to vote against the Health in favor of a “pretty good” Genesis album doesn’t seem right to me.

Had the thread happened in 1978, it is likely it would be the other way around - and more.  I bought both albums on release.  To put it into context, National Health had to wait over two years to get an album released.  Virgin wouldn't touch them.  National Health would not have been able to fill a 1,000 capacity venue - the same year Genesis played to 100,000 at Knebworth.  I saw both bands that year - the mass gathering at Knebworth and National Health supporting Steve Hillage (I was in a minority in the crowd into NH).

Makes sense to me too. Genesis, average album rather short of ideas and compromising more complex content for commercialisation. National Health, interesting, challenging and refreshing.

I've always loved Genesis' ATTW3 and voted for them here, despite NH's album being the superior one here. EmbarrassedTongue

National Health easily, although I'm surprised it's leading. Genesis being Genesis, they always get more attention with their albums, but with this one, ATTWT, it just doesn't happen to be very good in my humble opinion.

Not able to vote but I'd like to express my love for this Genesis' great piece of work (their last, in my opinion)
Frequently go back to relisten with much pleasure - the energy it pumps right from the beginning up to the last track always percolates my soul and body

I'm a big Genesis fan, but National Health is a much better album than ATTW3

NH easily. There’s no pandering to the changes in music the late-70’s brought on.
And Dave Stewart. Every solo is a treat.

So 'and then there were three' reached no. 3 in the UK and no. 14 in the US in 78  while NH's debut got nowhere.  Where was everybody in 1978?  Yep, listening to Genesis rather than National Health (except me of courseTongue)

National Health. Prog isn't about popularity of the time of release or how many releases were sold. It's about what stands the test of time.

Indeed - I was just noting the paradox.  National Health struggled for two years to get a record deal - later the same year Dave Stewart gave up on NH due to the financial situation whereas Genesis decided to take the year off.  If the voting ratio here was converted to contemporaneous album sales one wonders if National Health would eventually end their concerts with a medley of cover versions (including 'It's My Party')?
