So just at the end of my first listen of the whole album.

Initial thoughts? Not as bad as H&E but that's not a massive recommendation. It's ok, kind of prog light but I don't think I will be buying it. "Mystery Tour" is all about the Beatles (how many references to Beatle songs can you get into one lyric) and is a bit cringe- worthy, the synth sounds are very high on the cheese factor at certain points but overall it's a 2 or 3 star album. Pleasant but uninspiring. You could play it over the speakers in a supermarket without upsetting anyone.

I'm fully expecting P.Paul to give it at least 5.

^I also just had my first listen through yesterday.
This seems like a fairly accurate account of what I heard as well. Prog lite. Most songs, more or less, sound the same to me. I don't mean I can't distinguish between the different melodies, I mean they just sound the same instrumentally...uninspired. Sure Howe has the 'Relayer' like guitar sound happening, but the keyboards seemed lost to me. And even though Jon Davidson sure has the Jon Anderson timbre, it somehow doesn't quite elevate the music the way I feel JA's voice did.
A, not altogether unsurprising, bit of a let down for this Yes fan. But then I've felt that way for a longtime now.

It's the prog equivalent to this beer.
It'll do in a pinch but never really satisfies.

I would disagree with you guys on this one, I found it to be a very good album, probably the best record yes has made since The Ladder. I think it is a step in a new direction for the band that I find quite enjoyable. Jon Davidson seems to be getting more confidence as a vocalist. It seems to me like he not trying as hard to sound like Jon Anderson and is actually getting a voice of his own. As well I find that the use of orchestral arrangements gives this album itís own unique sound that is unlike any other Yes album. I know they have used orchestral arrangements before, but this time I think the way they used it was unique from their previous efforts. In my opinion I think this is a super high quality yes album, I would probably give it 4- 4.5 stars ⭐️. Excellent album in my view.

It takes a few listens to really get into.  There is definitely something missing and I feel it's Chris SQUIRE.  I would call this regressive as apposed to progressive.  If they were touring in my area, I would skip it.

It's better than some and worse than others. Very average.

Usually classic bands like this release an album simply to justify a tour so i would guess that live shows will focus more on the classics than new material.

Also listened to it yesterday; needed two attempts to get to the end.
No, it is not good. Was this a new prog band, I would indeed call it prog by numbers with hints of Yes. But this is Yes, and it is much too bleak to be Yes music. It is better than H&E indeed, but it is very forgettable music. I don't hear any spontaneity, any creativity, any pleasure they might have had in making this. It is just bleak.

It is definitely clear for me that in the songwriting department the good ones have left this band. There are some nice melodies, on one song some above average singing (I'm thinking of Leave Well Alone...). For the rest it is hardly going beyond elevator music, apart from a couple of moments that might disturb the passengers. Steve Howe shows that he can give guitar lessons to beginners with all the tone scales he's spreading around. The orchestrations overall couldn't get more clichť than what they are on this album, and the synth are regularly - indeed - on the cheesy side. Best track in my opinion is The Ice Bridge, which only underlines the fact that for good songwriting they have to bring in someone else...

It's a completist album at best......They need to stop or only record with Jon Anderson, Rick, Steve H and Alan White to have a chance at creating something worthy to be called a Yes record.

HA I'm totally drinking Miller Lite as I type this!

I need to check out the album; a former band mate messaged me saying it was passable on first listen.

It's missing the aggressiveness and tension that their music used to have. I think Heaven & Earth is slightly better than this offering, but that's not saying much, isn't it? I guess I should give it another couple more listens, but there's so much out there much better than this that I should really be focusing on.

I would never tell these guys to quit what they're doing. If they're having fun doing this, then that's great. Their direction in music just isn't the same direction my ears are leading me these days, so we part amicably and leave it at that.

Of course, and if this is what they want to do, they should go on doing it. But we could ask (plea, beg) that they don't stick the Yes name to it. In my opinion it is unworthy of Yes music (but they're probably too much cashing in on the brand name, to abandon it...).

I can't bring myself to buy it--will be a first --but sounds boring as hell---besides Howe and White this lineup had little chance of doing a great album or even a good album--agree with your comments even though that will never happen. Sounds like OYE meets H and E.

One professional reviewer said after the first 2 songs its all downhill---and welcome Starcastle . That to me says avoid at all costs---a horrible end to a great career. Sounding like Starcastle. But the lyrics are so insipid as to be laughable. JA at least made his lyrics so obtuse the sounded good.

I donít quite agree with saying that itís a prog by numbers album, I see a lot of stuff on here that I donít hear in many other prog albums. It seems to me like they are exploring new ground on this album that I donít hear in very many other records. I think they are trying to sound different then they have before and in that respect this album is really good.

Yep I agree, I think that they really do need to try to get Wakeman back because I do certainly find the keyboards on this album very lacking

Not my cup of tea, but not a bad album, just average, which is a little disapointing from a band that has always been on the front of the prog scene.

My first take is that it has more to offer than anything they have done since 90125. But its the usual over-scrubbed, "safe" sound production value that really turns me off. It really needs some dirt. Geoff Downes' choice of keyboard sounds always bugs me. There are only a couple what I would call truly bad songs. But I still probably won't listen to it again, and definitely won't buy it.

The Keys songs are light years ahead of anything they've done in recent years. And they have Rick Wakeman doing his thing, not his [son's] replacement phoning it in.

exploring new ground creating a new Yes sound was the same thing that was said about OYE at the time---the rest is history as it will be with this record. Sherwood has never written an interesting song. And neither can the singer.  Should have kept Ricks son in the band and get JA back

This album seems to lose against Yes' own glorious past, even against an hypothetical future with Anderson & Wakeman (any of them) back on board. But in a present of hardly memorable albums, it runs with a chance.

Rolling Rock would look high class relatively speaking.

Yes brought us Close To The Edge 49 years ago, but these days they are not producing Music To My Ears and I see no Future Memories of this album for myself, because this album doesn't have an edge and is just not something I enjoy listening to.

If I want to listen to Yes, I would put on one of their good albums.

2.5 stars.

I stopped listening after four songs. It's not terrible but there's just no edge to it at all. The amount of moments that sounded even mildly interesting to me did not justify the running time; I'm not listening to something this mediocre in full just because it's from a popular band when I still have a gigantic backlog of music I still need to listen to, most of which is probably more inventive, not to mention more in need of exposure and financial support.

What I don't understand is why they released this as a 2 CD set when it could have easily fit on just one disc.

I got the CD yesterday, the artwork by Roger Dean is very nice, and I'm happy to add this new album to my collection. The music? Well, it's too early to tell, but so far I'm not very impressed. It's pretty much like I expected. Definitely closer to the bottom than to the top of my ranking, but still nice to have new music from the band.

I've just taken a look at the track listing for The Quest and it makes no sense to me either that Disc 1 is 47 minutes long and Disc 2 is only 13 minutes long when the songs could easily have all been included on one hour-long CD. Confused

this is unfortunately very funny and very true.

The album lack any "oomph". It's harmless and lifeless.

And Big Generator is hated by many, but at least BG has something that post Magnification albums do not have and that is energy! life if i may say so.

If generating less "oomph" means The Quest doesn't sound anything like Big Generator, then that's a good thing in my view. I'd much rather listen to the "oomph-less" Heaven & Earth album than Big Generator anytime. Smile

No, it's not what I meant. I used two very negative adjectives to describe my thoughts on the new album - "harmless" and "lifeless".

I mentioned Big Generator because it's dissed by many, but at least, for me, it's got energy, to be brutally honest, it's got some balls, that post Magnification Yes does not have.

Big Generator was recorded with a lot of enthusiasm. New blood in the sound mix and songs that they felt would be radio hits, when they started recording it. Too bad the end of its recording resulted in tensions within the group. Perhaps it would have been a better album if that had not happened. So love it or hate it, the album does have energy.

Mystery Tour is indeed embarrassing and cringe worthy, so Iím personally glad that it is not part of the main album but only appears on the separate bonus disc. From that perspective it makes total sense that they put these three extra tracks on a disc of their own, to draw a clear line between these extras and the main feature.

Still, with Howe in an interview having described The Quest as an "ecological album", it looks bad that it comes with more plastic than needed Tongue

I really love  the YES Mystery Tour song. It reminds me a lot of another favourite song of mine:-

Barclay James Harvest - Titles

^ If all the songs on The Quest album are anywhere near as good as Mystery Tour, then it could well turn out to be a 5-star favourite album. Thumbs Up

At this point I have to quote John McEnroe - "you cannot be serious".

good prog is simple--make sure EVERY member of the band is one of the best --classic Yes Genesis ELP PF KC
Focus GG---all the best jamming away ---playing amazing things on their instruments and making magic.

once you get 2 or three mediocre musicians in a prog band there is no hope for greatness---its just boring at best  and cringe worthy at  worst.

Well I put it at 4.2 stars on my review video, so thatís a little bit farther away from Close To The Edge. This album is in my view a very good album, I think itís a good direction for the band. Keep in mind that I would probably rate like every 70s Yes album at 5 stars, so 4.2 is a reasonable rating in my view.

I have given it a couple of listens now.

There are a couple of really nice tracks. The rest is merelyÖÖÖ..sorry, fell asleep there for a moment. Much of it is utterly soulless, devoid of any energy at all, and Mystery Tour is simply inexorable.

It is better than H&E, but that was an album which made Open Your Eyes sound like a classic Yes album, so not much to crow about. Will review this, but two stars at most. I certainly will not get the cd.

Pleasant but uninspiring. You could play it over the speakers in a supermarket without upsetting anyone.

I wasn't going to buy it, but now I don't want to hear the rest of it! That's major cringe. It's 2021. What is the point of writing such a song??!! Thumbs Down
To remind us how old the band members are? LOL

Yes, that's it! LOL

Close the thread!

I'm presuming that being "a total banger" is a good thing and I'm So Glad I'm not the only one here who loves the Mystery Tour Beatles tribute. Thumbs Up

The Beatles and Cream are both coming up soon on my new Psych Britannia channel. Other than that, there's no connection at all. Smile

LOLLOL I think it's more XML (or something like that) than HTML, but it doesn't make it any less funny!

When I first saw it I actually thought "Holy Script Attack Batman". Then I saw @verslibre's response and cracked up even more. But as you say...no less funny

I really gave THE QUEST a decent listen and then decided to listen to MAGNIFICATION for the first time and well I know which YES album I'll be purchasing next!  No offense to Howe and Co. but they could've done so much better.

I'm sure the upcoming tour will feature three songs from the new album and then the usual plethora of classics.

I'm fully expecting P.Paul to give it at least 5.

Yeah. If this album wasn't made by Yes it wouldn't be being discussed here.

Agreed. Not even Roger Dean's excellent artwork is worth buying the album for.

Hi,

I have one question!

Give this bunch of players a different name, and the album shows up with a different group name and no references to YES, or even a Roger Dean cover!

How far would you listen to it?

I can tell you that I would not listen very far, having seen a couple of these folks in the last version of YES with Chris. The singer was not very good, he did not know or understand the lyrics of anything and his theatrical "tricks" were hand and face gestures that belong in the old Greek Theater, not within rock music, unless your name is Aphrodite's Child ... maybe! It was the saddest thing I have ever seen, although it was fantastic to see Chris and Steve and Alan together, but I had seen them before at the LB Arena with TFTO and it was by far one of the best concerts I have ever seen ... pure classical music done within rock by folks that were our age ... total far out and neat ... but sadly everyone came to the show to hear the songs they already had in their records at home!

I would not have tried to redo a huge name or band ... it's ridiculous and the children all are simply fodder (and blood!) for another war and the fight for the name of the parent ... and I'm disgusted that the YES management allows this. If it were good, and on par with their best I might reconsider, but it is all second and third and has to have similar touches that the originals did, like CTTE had the same touches as Roundabout ... the whole thing is ridiculous! And just a money grab by a few people, by "hiring" musicians for a nickel!

^ very true--I think they keep it going as Yes to help support Chris's family---
I mean what Hackett does with Genesis music is amazing--its not a tribute band it is a truly great band (Steve hires the best) who perform Genesis music fans want to hear-- perfectly.
The ARW band was a good lineup it Howe was playing guitar . With their drummer and bass player.
If only Anderson Howe Wakeman and White could just play and not call it Yes.

The Beatles and Cream are both coming up soon on my new Psych Britannia channel. Other than that, there's no connection at all. Smile

Yes ain't been Yes since Tormato; that said, this new album ain't Yes.....sounds more like mid-90s Asia but even less inspired.

I disagree about 90s Asia. I like the albums with Payne. Around mid 90s, they did their heaviest album - Aria in 1994 and the proggish Arena in 1996, I'd rather listen to Payne Asia than most later day Yes. IMHO, the last good album Geoff Downes did anything interesting was the last Asia album with John Payne in 2005. Obviously that means I disliked the Asia reunion albums.

Yeah, so funny story...I just went out to do some weeding on the patio in preparation for our Thanksgiving Mega Family Get Together and, as I usually do when working in the yard, I took my iPod out with me. I usually have around 200 tunes (16hrs) of random tunes on it. Only this time after a few minutes I realized I was thinking to myself "What the hell am I listening to?" . Then it hit me, oh yeah I was checking out Yes The Quest yesterday while working in the kitchen. I hadn't even realized it was Yes for several minutes. But the first thing I did notice was that I was bored with what I was hearing. Then it made sense. This experience reconfirms my first impression. One more of the greats ending on a sad note. At least I hope it's ending.

I don't think it's so bad. I can't say I'm enthusiastic, but I haven't skipped any track on my first listen. The second has still to happen, but it's still possible.

Is it worse that they still call it Yes (which they have the right to do as much as they want), or rather that you because of this feel obliged to listen to it? I don't mind them doing it at all, but I don't have time for it. No vote.
