Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Seputus are an American technical death metal band formed in 2005 by Pyrrhon members Steve Schwegler and Doug Moore. The group's atmospheric blend of grindcore, death- and black metal is primarily composed by guitarist/drummer Schwegler with vocalist Moore providing lyrics.
With Pyrrhon bassist Erik Malave joining the lineup, the trio released their debut LP, Man Does Not Give, via PRC Music in 2016, inspired by Schwegler's service in the United States Navy and addressing "the violence, uncertainty, and abjection that drive the machinery of modern life." Having joined Pyrrhon as their drummer in 2015 and co-founding progressive death-doom group Weeping Sores in 2016, the busy Schwegler took time to write and flesh out Seputus' follow-up, Phantom Indigo, which was ultimately released by Willowtip Records in 2021. Taking inspiration from British neurologist Oliver Sacks' book Hallucinations, Schwegler described the LP as "a window into the kind of 'mental loops' that can occur from repeated fixation, meaningless daily routine and negative mental thought patterns." The record featured guest solos by guitarists Peter Lloyd (of Replicant), Evan Schaefer (of Sadgiqacea), Dan Gargiulo (of Artificial Brain) and fellow Pyrrhon bandmate Dylan DiLella.
Seputus come recommended to fans of Artificial Brain, Flourishing, Aseitas, Inter Arma, Lykathea Aflame and Ingurgitating Oblivion.
