I think that The Geese and The Ghost is my preferred album, because of how beautiful the whole thing sounded. I do like Voyage of the Acolyte, but find it to be a bit pretentious, especially during The Shadow of The Hierophant with the opera singer(Sally Oldfield) and the overlong ending. Both of the bands for the debuts also have some of the same people on it such as Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and John Hackett. Anthony's debut was such a great album, but it seems like he will never make anything that good again, and will sound different as well.

I'm sorry for the Geese, but Voyage is just grander and to me more memorable. Regarding The Shadow of The Hierophant, my preferred version is the full 17 minute version (featured on some rereleases) - which is basically five minutes more of that fabulous end-crescendo. That ending stands out in the history of recorded music as one of the most wonderful crecendos.

My vote is for Geese, as I've always felt Voyage is a vastly overrated album. It has some great moments ("Star of Sirius") and demonstrates all the potential of Steve's future career as a solo artist, but the record is horribly produced. I realize Steve was probably given a very low budget to record it, but "The Hermit" sounds like it was recorded in a garage.

The Geese and the Ghost is a much better recording, a flawless (yet quiet) masterpiece, and it's not even Anthony's best album.

My feelings exactly.. I love both equally but for very different reasons. I can appreciate what has been said about the production on Acolyte; it is a bit 'boxy' and muffled/distant sounding in places but for me that increases the atmosphere of the album particularly in relation to the subject matter. Both albums for me are very emotional and truly spine tingling.

Like many others, I find this a difficult choice. Both albums are excellent and very different from one another. My vote went to ANT, however. One of the few times I would have voted for both if that option were available. Ying Yang

Two excellent albums, between which I prefer not to make a choice.

It's 'Acolyte as 'Ghost is a little too sedate for my liking.

Honestly, I cannot choose. Both are wonderful albums, and I enjoy listening to them all the time.

I prefer Hackett and it's an album that's stuffed with mellotron. Not much on Ant's but it's still close for me as both are 5 star albums.

I'll give the nod to Voyage, though I love both, and The Geese and the Ghost is something special and beautiful. As for Shadow of the Hierophant, I think it's perfectly wonderful, and my favourite song on both albums... actually, my favourite from Hackett.

Phil Collins is brilliant on both albums, but no one ever mentions that.

Hackett easily. Voyage of the Acolyte against Wise after the Event would be way harder for me.

Too close to call, but Shadow of the Heirophant gives Steve Hackett the edge, if I'm being a sycophant.

Yeah I feel a bit the same. There are better other versions of Shadow of The Hierophant than the officially released version. However even without Shadow, Voyage is a better album album than Geese and that's not putting down Geese.

I like both, but without any doubt Voyage of the Acolyte - Steve Hackett.

Acolyte . Perhaps one track (The Hermit) short of being an absolute masterpiece (?) I struggle with Ant's album for some reason. I've got a CD version of it somewhere but I can stream it no doubt. Need to give it another chance.
