I think Vangelis music is perfect for a desert island, and that I'd be perfectly happy having only his music to listen to. As I've done all day today and plan to do tomorrow. Which ten albums would you bring? I think I'll choose these. The order is neither totally random nor is it totally thought through.

Odes (with Irene Papas)
The Dragon
L'apocalypse des Animaux
Blade Runner
Hypothesis
Sex Power
Earth
See You Later
Opera Sauvage
Spiral

Not one identical album choice:) But I've only really heard two of these. Odes is a favorite of mine, so I should probably check this on out.

I noticed that too. I'm also surprised neither of us included the classic Heaven & Hell album on our list. That would've been my 11th choice. Wink

Yes it's somewhere bubbling under. Heaven & Hell is really more of an album that on paper sound like something I should love, rather than being an album that I actually love. It's a tough LP for me to listen to from start to finish. Too grand and overblown for me in parts (but also truly wonderful in parts).

Sadly, I do not own (or know) 10 Vangelis albums--but your lists gets me motivated to try some!

Be honest: Who of you would take "Beaubourg" along on this island?

Haha. It's at least a somewhat intriguing listen. But I don't find myself reaching for it very often. Or ever.

Albedo 0.39
Heaven and Hell
Spiral
Opéra Sauvage
Mask
Direct
Blade Runner

Obviously I'll need to listen to more to get it up to 10.

^not one title shared with you either, but I would have included 666 if I had considered it. A lot of the post-70's Vangelis-albums I've heard reminds me a little to much of "sports-event"-music. I don't mean it to sound as negative as it probably appears. I've heard some nice and impressive music at olympic opening ceremonies and such, but it will never be my go-to kind of music. Anything to grand and pompous fail to touch the heart. My heart, I mean. Large, but simple and melodic themes often makes me sort of uncomfortable. Just like large crowds do. Maybe I associate it with something (seductively) totalitarian. I don't know... but I know string quartets and sonatas has always spoken to me in a way symphonies and operas haven't.

I don't think Beaubourg, Mask or El Greco would be anywhere fitting that description. In fact I don't hear that much pomposity in a lot of his post 70's albums. If anything he toned it down quite a bit.

Heaven and Hell is vary varied and has sections that I'm sure would interest you.
Albedo 0.39 is quite a tight 'prog' album (perhaps his only one?!) but does have some pompous stuff.
China is just simply beautiful/majestic and lovely.

Oceanic and Voices could easily be perceived as dull and a bit 'New age' but they are delightful to me.

Direct is maybe his most consistent album albeit lacking inspiration but I still rate it highly as a well organised piece of work.

Agreed in regards to those titles I know (Edit: well, Mask is certainly Wagnerian at times, and has elements of what I was thinking about, but it's still among the later ones I somewhat enjoy). But as I wrote, I was thinking about some of the post 70's albums I've heard. Not all. Soil Festivities is certainly not like that either (but still not a favorite). And I have no such issues with Albedo 0.39 or China - both of which I would bring along with Heaven & Hell if I was allowed to choose 15 albums instead of 10.

Hi,

I would.

In actuality, I would take ALL OF IT, instead of a select few, as there are many things worth enjoying in each and every album going back to the very first, and the many soundtracks!

I simply do not think that in a commercial environment, like PA, something like "Beaubourg" can be discussed or appreciated, mostly because there are things that are "missing" from a progressive (bullpucky) point of view like lyrics, a screaming guitar or a blue bass player or some other low/middle class idea of what music is supposed to be! Embarrassed

But you're only allowed to choose 10. It's a Vangelis-themed survivalist game. You got your blanket, a knife, a water bottle, your sense of humour... and a select few more things. Now choose your ten Vangelis-albums and off to your desert island you go.

I remember Heaven and Hell was used as the theme music for the wonderful science series "Cosmos", presented by American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, science communicator, author and all-round good egg, Professor Carl Sagan (1934-1996), who's sadly missed, along with Vangelis. Broken Heart

Yeah that's a good question. Nice selection of albums btw. I will have to check out Oceanic and Direct

Let's see if I can narrow it down to ten. This will not be easy...

1. Albedo 0.39
2. Soil Festivities
3. Direct
4. L'Apocalypse des Animaux
5. Heaven and Hell
6. Blade Runner
7. Spiral
8. Juno to Jupiter
9. Rosetta
10. Opera Sauvage

Very tough. I'd love to somehow squeeze in Beaubourg and The City (a seriously underrated release), but the other ten = essential Vangelis.

Juno to Jupiter is incredible!

Really? There are so many ideas there it almost sounds like a sampler album! I've loved it since '88. "Elsewhere" and "Rotation's Logic" are fantastic. "Elsewhere" could even fit on Spiral. I listened to Direct yesterday and had to repeat some of the tracks because I like them so much. Unlike Optical Race, I think Direct has almost no filler (and that's debatable, since I don't mind "Intergalactic Radio Station").

Now I'm listening to China and thinking I may have to swap out Rosetta.
