Borknagar, I don't know if I would consider them progressive, but seeing as how Viking metal is black metal mixed with Progressive metal and folk I suppose I can see them being here.

Borknagar >> You.

That's crap, why don't we just add Dimmu Borgir while we're at it, because Dimmu's Prague Philharmonic Orchestra looks so cool in gauntlets.

^  Very funny, Vincent Mr. Ulk!

I agree with him though, but Borknagar is a cool band!

Borknagar isn't black metal though - hasn't been for years now.

Neither is Dimmu Borgir by the way. It's just crap metal.

o_O Are you calling Borknagar crap.

Shame.

They are Viking/Progressive ... maybe post-black.

Dimmu are Gothic metal.

That's right. They aren't Black or Viking Metal either. They're  basically melodic metal. They aren't that good either.

Man... I think we all managed to completely miss this.  I had no idea Borknagar was on here either.  I would also have to agree that they're probably not a prog-metal band.

Umm, their first album was a melodic Black/Viking metal piece, but after that they began to play Progressive Viking metal.

Yeah, they are that good actually. At least everything aside from Quintesence is.

A band can not be just "melodic metal", there is almost always some way to categorize it into one sub-genre of metal, if not than two or three.

I think I'll sum up the sentiments of most of this board by saying:

Who?

Basically they try to do what bands like Drudkh do but without the subtlety or class. It's really very boring and tame music that has been surpassed in many instances.

To know what Viking Metal is all about, check out Bathory - Hammerheart or Enslaved's early material (their later is very prog), or for a more recent example, Falkenbach. But Bathory invented and perfected it.

(PS: Popular opinion links crap like Amon Amarth as Viking Metal. Let it be known that it's a false classification.)

Trust me, I know what Viking metal is. I am a large fan of it.

Tyr
Ensiferum
Wintersun
Thyrfing
Moonsorrow
Mithotyn
Equilibrium
Ancient Rites
(Immortal Pride and onwards) Graveland

I really don't see many similarites between Drudkh and Borknagar, aside from the possibilities of the first album. The Olden Domain is great, and well ... I don't see much wrong with it.

Bathory didn't perfect it, I must say that Moonsorrow did that.

Yeah, I know Amon Amarth are melo-death.

Amon Amarth may not be viking metal, but they're definitely not crap either.

Their music sound pretty catchy. Not bad!!!

If that is so, then the following bands, which are not included in the archives, may classify under prog metal:

My Dying Bride / Neurosis / Stream of Passion / Theatre of Tragedy / Time Requiem / Tiamat / Wolverine

Any thoughts????

Borknagar is most certainly progressive, melding black, folk, "viking", and prog-metal together.

Yes, Ulver is very progressive. A band that has made black metal, folk metal, and avant-garde dark ambient music? Most definitely.

There really isn't a question about Solefald, it's pure ,100%, prog-metal.

Solefald should definatly be, I think that Post-black is in and of itself progressive.
