The guy on the top right isn't Sun Ra, its John Gilmore, Sun Ra's saxophone player. Sun Ra plays keyboards.
John Gilmore passed away too, and he was remarkable.

Well that's embarrasing, haha. Might have to edit.

Turns out its actually Marshall Allen, a living person. Whooooops. Back to the drawing board.

I see, now I'm thinking when I saw them in concert I confused Gilmore with Allen.

You should add his bandmate, (bassist) Sean Malone.

Pete Bardens, too.

Wow. I didn't realize Chick Corea died. Or if I did I forgot. Way too many gone too soon.

And John Mayhew. But not John Rutsey because he wasn't prog. Wink

Nice tribute to all these great ones who have left us. I hope there is a prog heaven, where we'll meet them again.

Kind of surprised they all ended up in heaven

Piotr Grudzinski of Riverside and Andrew McDermott of Threshold - both died young, both shocking for me (and I'm sure others).

Seriously! What the hell is Zappa doing there? He'd be appalled. LOL

Ah wonderful prog heaven - where some of our heroes are lucky enough to spend eternity as the young version of themselves - while others are less fortunate.

You are missing Triumvirat's lead singer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Helmut Koellen, who sadly died at the tender age of 27 on May 3rd, 1977.

Perhaps substitute Peter Bardens, a notable omission.

Another at 27? Gosh, I'm surprised Magenta never wrote a song about him!

So that's Robert, Jim, Jimi, Janis, Brian, Kurt, Amy & Helmut... Ouch

Also Mahavishnu bassist Rick Laird, as well as Keyboard maestro Don Shinn who passed quite recently, an influence on both Keith Emerson and Jon Lord (notice he's not on PA). He had two great jazz fusion albums in 1969 and played electric piano on Renaissance Illusion album, as well as other projects.

Ironically his last album "You Won't See Me" turned out to be prophetic.

Exactly.
I am friends on facebook with relatives, friends and colleagues of Helmut Koellen's who relate how much they still love him very much and miss him dearly-decades later. What a sad end it was for him, but he is not forgotten.

Not to make light of such a serious subject,  but your montage is  woefully incomplete , since it  omits the loss of

GARY BROOKER

We also just lost KEITH REID , Procols  brilliant lyricist

David Bedford was a composer who was affiliated with Progressive Rock...off and on..throughout his career. He worked with Mike Oldfield, Camel on The Snow Goose and a few artists that made their mark in the so called Canterbury scene.

I have 11 of his cds and I discovered him in the mid 70s collecting his albums. I miss David Bedford greatly. I wish someone on this planet would make an investment and release a box set of his works.
