Ultimate Classic Rock's 40 best long songs rankings. My first thought was any "live" song should not be a part of this list, as any song could be extended in a live setting.
A good showing of many progressive rock epic staples, although as normal some ranked too low as preference is given to rock bands like GNR?? A live song is #1......Anyhow as these lists go. I thought it was pretty good..

That's an excellent Top 40 line-up. I like nearly all of the 40 songs listed, apart from Television, who always make me want to change channels. Smile

Sure, but I'm still willing to defend the inclusion of Dark Star (although I would personally gone for Terrapin Station) as it needs to be heard live.

-All in all as great a list as one could dare to hope for.

I'd prefer a list of long LIVE songs......The reasons to create a long studio track versus perform a long live song are different IMO.

^I see your point. But I would probably have considered Dark Star live myself nevertheless. It feels different than just any long live version of a short ditty.

Agreed.  That said, KISS's live version of 100,000 years transcends the poorly produced studio version. The same should be said of Parasite.

Forgive moi....Time to wash mouth out.Ouch

It's a good list but no Gates of Delirium and no Awaken. Also, there should maybe be at least one more Genesis song on there (Firth Of Fifth maybe?).

Not a bad list and actually pleased to see ELP - Karn Evil 9 get some love over the more vaunted Tarkus.

Nice list but where's Transatlantic's – "The Whirlwind"?  (all 77:46 minutes of it).

^^ It may be the 'Longest', but is it really the Ultimate? Has it really make a significant cultural statement like others in the poll?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's fine (and own it), but it wouldn't make my own list, neither would Green Carnation's LODDOD or even Oldfield's Amarok which have filled entire albums with one track?

I think their definition of 'Long Songs' suggests a minimum 10 minute run time and as such, there were for me a few surprising omissions, such as 'Child In Time'... unless I missed it?

^^ Agree, I enjoy The Whirlwind but that would never make a list like this. These lists always focus on the classics, classic rock and classic prog.
Progressive rock was represented well I thought.......I'm surprised Tubular Bells did not make it.

And "Maggot Brain" (an album which I own), has???

"Maggot Brain" (1971) is such a classic and is one that I would hope would make such a list. Expecting The Whirlwind (which is commonly divided into tracks) in the Ultimate Classic Rock list is seriously overestimating its significance, popularity/ knownness by my reckoning. Maybe you know something I don't.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

I agree. The Transatlantic Whirlwind completely passed me by with barely a flutter, but I haven't been able to Free My Mind from the infectious beat of Maggot Brain. Smile
