Founded in 2010, Sarmat are a North American progressive death metal quintet from New York City, named after the deadliest weapon in the Russian nuclear arsenal. Sarmat's lineup consists of guitarists Cotter Champlain and Oleg Zalman (of https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=8874" rel="nofollow - Artificial Brain ), bassist Rajan Davis, drummer James Jones and vocalist Andrew Gonzalez. Signed to I, Voidhanger Records, the ensemble plays a highly technical death metal informed by jazz fusion, which the label alternately describes as "the https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=649" rel="nofollow - Mahavishnu Orchestra playing https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4865" rel="nofollow - Gorguts " and a "hybrid between Defeated Sanity and https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1696" rel="nofollow - Weather Report ," and compared by critics to https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=8897" rel="nofollow - Pyrrhon , https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1073" rel="nofollow - Cynic , https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=387" rel="nofollow - Planet X , https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4791" rel="nofollow - Naked City and https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4416" rel="nofollow - Cosmosquad .

Recorded by Colin Marston at his Menegroth studio, Sarmat made their sudden appearance in 2023 with the Dubious Disk EP, a seventeen-minute live take improvised on themes featured on the closing track of their debut LP, Determined to Strike, released a scant two months later. The first part of a conceptual science-fiction trilogy, the album temporarily replaced Zalman and Davis with the talents of guests such as brassist Cameron Carrella and bassist/pianist Steve Blanco of https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=10795" rel="nofollow - Imperial Triumphant and https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6159" rel="nofollow - PAK (both of whom also played on Dubious Disk), along with guitarist Matt Hollenberg of https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6146" rel="nofollow - Cleric and saxophonist Ed Rosenberg III of https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=11495" rel="nofollow - Kilter .
