| What is your favorite Captain Beefheart album? My personal choice is 'Trout Mask Replica' because of its experimental and unique approach. This album was also the first to mark Captain Beefheart's distinctive musical vision in full effect. |

I'm most entertained by Safe as Milk and Clear Spot. Every song on each of those are so much fun. In regards to Beefheart I'm more into his unique kind of feel and groove. I guess I get more out of Trout Mask Replica's... experiments when a similar approach is put to use within the context of a more conventional tune. |

I don't care about Trout Mask Replica that much to be honest. It certainly has its moments but I find much of it more or less irritating. I think Lick My Decals Off, Baby is a better take of a similar thing. Vote goes to Shiny Beast.

Lester Bang's review in Creem magazine directed me to Trout Mask Replica ( I already had Save As Milk and Strictly Personal in my collection ) he called it the rawest rock and roll ever invented. I thought that they had changed into a MC5 band... boy was I surprised ! Avant-garde musical posturing with psychedelic Dada lyrical flow propelled by edgy musicianship- this lp blew my high school mind. It wrapped me up and provided hours of enjoyment. A life changing piece of work. This for me is their best ; but, Doc at the Radar Station, Ice Cream for Crow, and Spot Light Kid are unbelievable statements as well. |
