Hi Folks, it's December! Family time! So here's an eclectic selection of funny, great, interesting or unpopular prog (or not) songs to honour your Mom and Dad. If you don't know all of them (I'm not talking about your father or mother, but about these tracks put up here), don't hesitate to listen to this special https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKNG8R6tb0A&list=PL9sdQ5qbl2rDfGzXMhHSvOZ2lbAz7yWMH" rel="nofollow - Mom & Dad playlist . And if you think there's to much Zappa, well then... that sucks! Tongue

Anyway, enjoy and vote for your three preferred tracks from these:

In order of appearance:

Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - Mom & Dad (RIO/Avant-Prog)
The Nice - Daddy Where Did I Come From? (Symphonic Prog)
Quiet Sun - Mummy Was an Asteroid, Daddy Was a Small Non-Stick Kitchen Utensil (Canterbury Scene)
Adrian Belew - Oh Daddy (Eclectic Prog)
Shadow Circus - Daddy's Gone (Symphonic Prog)
Genesis - Mama (Pop, or something like that)
Gryphon - Get Out of My Father's Car! (Prog Folk)
The Psychedelic Ensemble - Book I: Foreward (Mother's Rhymes) (Neo-Prog)
Teleharmonium - The Mother Generator (Crossover Prog)
Pink Floyd - Mother (Psychedelic/Space Rock)
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Father of Day, Father of Night (Eclectic Prog)
Demetrio Stratos - Daddy's Dream (Rock Progressivo Italiano)
Frank Zappa - Daddy, Daddy, Daddy (RIO/Avant-Prog)
Frank Zappa - Yo' Mama (RIO/Avant-Prog)

Nice, I'll vote for...

Pink Floyd - "Mother"
Zappa and the Mothers - "Mom & Dad"
Quiet Sun - "Mummy Was an Asteroid, Daddy a Kitchen Utensil"

Just to mention some others that immediately came to mind with Mother in the title:
Can - "Mother Sky" (Soundtracks, 1970, Krautrock)
Swans - "Mother's Milk" and "Mother / Father" (The Great Annihilator, Exp. Rock, 1995)

There can never be too much Zappa. I'll vote for Floyd, Quiet Sun, and Belew.

However, you forgot Mike Keneally's "Father's Day". Wink

Psychedelic Ensemble and Quiet Sun of those I didn't know; Manfred Mann's Earth Band of the known ones. (Hadn't listened to Mama for decades but it's actually an OK song; these Zappa things don't do much for me. Not a too big fan of the Belew, Pink Floyd, Nice ones either.)

Frank Zappa (Mom and Dad), Quiet Sun, Gryphon.

Oh, The Nice, and though DWDICF is far from my favorite Nice tune and is completely unhinged it must be credited for Keith's engaging pre-Prog organ work.

^ always thought that track was mostly the work of 'shagger' (Lee Jackson's nickname that came from being prolific in that department!) so it was really Jackson's organ that was the inspiration (oh dear I'll get my coat)

Jackson did have a magnificent organ.

Hi,

I was thinking that this should be excluded, for cheating. It's a Bob Dylan song!!!

MM did a Bob Dylan song in every album until he did Bruce Springsteen in his next album. Later he went back to doing Bob though he also did Mike Heron and others.

Cheating?! That's a poor choice of words and an exaggeration.
MMEB had a gift to do covers and make them sound their style, a lot of them more enjoyable for many than the original songs.

Yeah... of course it's not cheating at all as nobody ever claimed that the song was written by the Earth Band themselves.

^ & ^^ Oh, I actually think moshkito's post was rather ironic, since he normally defends (new) interpretations of old(er) compositions (I remember some of his posts, where he was maybe more talking about dead composers, but I guess that's also valid for the still living) and whether Mozart, Stravinsky or even Boulez are not composing anymore but rather decomposing, their music - fortunately - is still played/interpreted. Now, Dylan is still alive IFAIK, but would that prevent others from interpreting his songs? No, fortunately not. And I think Mosh is alright with that too!

That said:
1. MMEB did a much better job than Dylan himself, actually (which happened more often!).
2. I never cheat (unless I do...).
3. It's my poll!

Oh, it's worse, actually: I had Keneally's track on my long-list (as I had, e.g., Mogwai's My Father, My King), but I didn't want to make the list - and especially the playlist, for that matter - too long, and since Father's Day is only in six months or so... Sorry... Tongue
(but there can never be too much Zappa, indeed!)

Hi,

Gosh ... wasn't meant to be taken literally!

Definitely agree on MM's taste in a lot of these pieces. He made them all sound better and more interesting, except Mike Heron, who continued to stay incognito. Wish his album "Diamond of Dreams" would get released. Looking for it again!
