Still Life, VDGG's best album

The Wheel of Time Turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the shadow.

I like Over very much, but Still Life is really superb.

Over by far for me. It's something special. Deeply moving. If I'm in the wrong mood for it, I get slightly depressed. But that's what art can do. Love Pilgrims and My Room but I struggle with Peter Hammill's vocals on the rest of the songs on Still Life. Well only in parts of the songs, but unfortunately those parts are enough for me to rarely revisit the album. I simply have a strong dislike of that kind of gruff singing voice. It doesn't strike me as honest expression really. It feels more like overacting. What can I say it gets on my nerves. Sp although the song-material is as great as ever before, I don't listen to it very often.

While I think Over has certainly a bit more personal virtues and characteristics that make it quite enjoyable as a solo Hammill record, Still Life just has a bit more lovely attributes and finesse that make it just a bit more enjoyable.

There are some very well crafted songs on Over and it is a very intimate view of where Hammill was at that point.. but i'm just not really into 'Break-up' albums.. One wonders what life must have been in a relationship with someone as intense and singularly focused as PH? Well i guess Over gives you a pretty good insight.

Still Life isnt perfect.. it does feel just a teensy bit forced at times.. Trying to build on Godbluff so quickly and more manic touring.. but it does have some absolutely brilliant speaker-blowing, larynx splitting moments so easily gets my vote.

"Frightened in the SILENCE!
....Frightened but thinking very hard!"

Stuff like that?

It's one of the best moments in all of music in my opinions

I've never listened to "Over", and I've never really gotten into "Still Life"... no vote.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.
