| I am simply wondering if anyone knows if there are any progressive rock bands who are more melodic. Something along the lines of Le Orme or Pink Floyd. I am searching for long, peaceful, transcending musical pieces that traverses your mind to another place through heavenly melodies and powerful progressions. Can anybody help me? If you can, please respond. |

Renaissance was a melodic folk group with symphonic arrangement. They were a wonderful band (two or three masterpieces in their discography) but not strictly prog, not even symphonic prog, because their art wasnt rock. ------------- Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. I agree with Renaissance (I'm currently listening to them a lot), but I can add Camel, especially if you like a Gilmour-like guitar (in my opinion Latimer is a better guitarist than Gilmour from a technical point of view). You may also like Mostly Autumn (the first three albums in particular) ------------- I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. agree especially with the last statement. I find them a bit boring because I like to hear the 'rock'. Most classic era prog bands do melody though. It would be a fallacy to suggest otherwise. Yes became massive for this very reason. There have wonderful melodies all over their many classic releases accepting maybe a little bit on Relayer where they went for a more 'angular' style. A lot of canterbury bands are also great for melodic and easy going atmosphere. They can be the classic bands like Caravan but also more modern artists such as Tom Penaguin, Needlepoint and Zopp that have it in spades. It's not like we are looking for a needle in a haystack! |

Some of Mystery, notably Beneath the Winter's veil, is quite melodic. Even more specifically, their "The Sailor and the Moon". Some of Camel too, but others more knowledgeable will be better to point out the best examples. But at least Summer Lightning. A good chunk of Silhouette as well in their 2 core albums, "Across the Rubicon" and "Beyond the Seventh Wave". More specifically, I'd recommend these tracks: Empty places, When Snow's falling down from 1st one, In Solitary, Lost Paradise, Wings to Fly from the second. From Pendragon, I'd cite Paintbox in particular. Maybe The Shadow, but that depends what one calls "melodic". Also Faces of light (from where my usertag comes). Ah, and their last album as well. Moonrise is also often quite melodic, but once again that comes down to what one defines as "melodic". Try Lake of Tears' Forever Autumn. The whole album I'd even say, though some of the songs are almost heavy rock. I'd say the eponymous track is particularly melodic. Lastly, Nightsky from Mostly Autumn (both Mostly Autumn's and Moonrise's tracks of the same name actually :) ). Maybe even their whole first album. Edit: Believe's 2 first albums are often melodic. Often fairly rocky, but also melodic.
