Gorging Shade are an American progressive death metal quartet and the continuation of instrumental project Canvas Solaris. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, its impetus began in late 2015 when Canvas Solaris bassist Gael Pirlot wrote material for a potential sister band, more blackened and less eclectic than his flagship unit. Their name alludes to the Charles Baudelaire poem "Un Voyage à Cythère." The embryonic version of Gorging Shade consisted of Pirlot and his Canvas Solaris partner Hunter Ginn (drummer for Sculptured and Agalloch since 2022 and 2023 respectively) along with a lead vocalist-cum-keyboardist, but creative misunderstandings led to the band falling back to earth. Over a year later, Pirlot reached out to Ginn to reboot the project from scratch, and the two ultimately recruited their fellow Canvas Solaris bandmates Chris Rushing (guitars) and Nathan Sapp (guitars/vocals).

Gorging Shade play a blackened and technical death metal which skirts between melody and dissonance, occasionally dipping into dark ambience which points to Ginn and Pirlot's ritual post-industrial project Plague Psalm. Pirlot and Ginn share lyrical duties, split between the former's occult inclinations and the latter's oblique allusions to his journey to sobriety. The recording and production journey which began in 2021 finally came to a close in late 2024 with the independent release of debut LP, Inversions, which earned Gorging Shade critical comparison to Gorguts, Krallice, Anata, Aseitas and even Bohren & der Club of Gore.

In an early 2025 interview, Ginn stated that Canvas Solaris were more-or-less put to rest, with the band deciding to continue in their new direction as Gorging Shade.
