So, where do you stand on Vangelis?

I only really have his earlier albums, which come in a few different categories for me:

Top Notch: H&H, Albedo, Spiral

Wonderful: Earth, China, Antarctica, Soil Festivities, Mask, The City

Solid: L'Apocalypse, Ignacio, Opera Sauvage, See You Later, Direct, Voices, Mr Cairo, Private Collection

OK: Fete Sauvage, Short Stories, The Dragon

A Struggle: Hypothesis, Beaubourg, Odes & Rapsodies

Don't Ask: Invisible Connections

Your turn?

^^^ thank you for your list! what I like about it is although we've established that we have essentially different tastes when it comes to Prog, it's nice that we both enjoy Vangelis, even though we might put the albums in a different order?

^ Yes I suppose none of us should be surprised that we got different favorites, but hey we both think Earth* is wonderful:). However, it does surprise me somewhat that you think Odes is a struggle to listen to. I think it's simply stunning. Not Progressive Rock of course, but foreshadowing Dead Can Dance progressive approach to different musical traditions of the past - five or six years prior to them. But you may not be into DCD either.

Edit: corrected

No-one enhanced the Vangelis sound quite like the voice and theatricality of Irene Papas on Odes and Rhapsodies, IMO

I would love to get The Bounty OST but it's never been given a proper release to my knowledge. Otherwise this is everything exc compilations and those with Jon Anderson which I enjoy but is a different story. I do include the 2 albums he did with Irene Papas though.

I've listened to Odes again as I must admit I haven't heard either Papas album in quite a wile... and I'd move it into the 'OK' category, mainly for the Vangelis sole pieces... I really can't give it higher than that; it doesn't do a great deal for me in comparison with most of his discography.

Nice to see a Vangelis appreciation thread. I'm surely a fan.

My favs are:

Heaven and Hell
Albedo 0.39
China
Entends
Ignacio
The Blade Runner 25th Anniversary boxset includign Demis Roussos
Soil Festivities
Mask
The City
Direct

Hard to listen to but sometimes it's rewarding: Invisile Connections

Stinker: See You Later

As Odes and Prodies have been mentioned, I think you have to be Greek to really appreciate them. They are full of local folk infuences. (I bought both the albums in Greece)

...not to start a polemic, but I still can't understand why Vangelis is "prog related"

-------------
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

No, I've never understood that, either. He's Progressive Electronic as far as I'm concerned, with 2 JRF and 2 Prog-Folk and 4 Crossover with JA...

I agree with Jared's list/order with the exception of "See You Later" which I would rate lower.
Also...not familiar with "The City".

What of     FAIS QUE TOUS REVE SOIT LONG QUE LA NUIT?

I don't think that one was brought up here.

Vangelis' 1990 sequel to 1988's Direct, created with the same arsenal of synths, samplers and e-percussion.

Yeah it's funny... I think 'See You Later' is oddly quite swish but I know I'm in the minority.

The City, while not being a masterpiece is again a very smooth listen and for me it's a joy.

Fais Que... difficult to get hold of a copy, think I've only played it once or twice on Youtube; don't know it well enough to give an opinion.

I'm guessing you're not enchanted by Irene Papas voice then:)

Actually, I often like a soprano voice and I don't mind her vocals, it's more the tracks themselves, I can't explain why the music just doesn't do much for me..

I never mentioned Blade Runner or Chariots; yes I'm familiar with the highlights of both, but never bothered with the albums. I might one day.
