In order: Male 1.- Peter Gabriel: Not the most gifted voice, but the guy puts emotion and talent, the best prog vocalist by far IMHO. 2.- Greg Lake: Great voice (probably the best), but lacks of the same emotion that Peter has. 3.- Dave Gilmour: Very talented, also great voice 4.- John Wetton: Similar to Lake but even less emotion. Female 1.- Annie Haslam/Christina Murphy: Both great in their styles. Iván

Seriously, no one has Jon Anderson's beautiful falsetto, and nobody has Ian Anderson's great semi-rusty voice! Next come Wetton for his job on The Night Watch, and the rest is bad. (Oh, and if I'll see Fish in here I'll go kick around because that guy CAN't sing ------------- Epic. |

I agree, especially about the angelic Liz Fraser and whispery Nick Drake...I'd have to add Tom Waits, Thalia Zedek, Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), and classic Crosby Stills & Nash. James: I've got time for Tori, too. When she first came to the UK I thought she was another Kate Bush (who I admire a great deal) but by no means a second rate copy. This was based mainly on 'Cornflake Girl' and I hadn't heard the album at that point. Great voice, makes you shiver.. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

Oh, I forgot the now defunct Demetrio Stratos, from the ultra avantgarde Italian band AREA - he took singing to the next level, not only using vocals as an instrument, but as a Cage/Stockhausen/Arabic/Tibetan instrument. Lots of Italian singers are really astonishing: Francesco di Giacomo (BMS), Leonardo Sasso (Locanda delle Fate), the lead singer in Museo Rosenbach's first album (I forgot his name), also the lead singer in Ossana (he plays rhythm guitar, too, and I also forgot his name). |

I love a lot of girl singers and non-prog voices... Annie Lennox gets me when she sings "Love Song for a Vampire", Beth Orton on "She Cries Your Name", Jane Siberry on "It Can't Rain all The Time", the girl from Hooverphonic, Mimi, Eva Cassidy... I love Sting's voice, David Bowie, Greg Allman, Steve Wilson...even Dave Kilminster, as long as he isn't singing "Lucky Man"... ------------- THIS IS ELP

threefates: Agree about Eva Cassidy. 'Autumn leaves' is one of of the most moving songs I've heard. I think her version of 'Fields of Gold' is far better than Stings' Not that I dislike Sting at all. Her version of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' brings a tear to the eye ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

I'd go with: Dave Gilmour, while PF get the praise they deserve, Gilmour's voice doe not. John Wetton, I find his voice amazingly atmospheric David Byron, he could have gone on to really great things Rob Sowden, Arena just sound better and better with him up front Phil Collins, When he closes to do prog, he's up there with the best Not quite prog for sure, but I reckon Steve Perry of Journey has one of the best voices in the business. |
