Subject: If DT covered a Genesis Album...

So if DT were to cover a Genesis album as part of Portnoy's 5 "planned" album covers (the first three of which were Metallica's Master Of Puppets, Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast, and recently Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon), which Genesis' 15 albums would they cover?
I would say Wind & Wuthering, and for very many good reasons. The album itself sounds heavier, IMO, than ATOTT, which has a lot of slower/ballad type songs (Entangled, Mad Man Moon, Ripples). W&W has some harder/heavier music with the likes of Eleventh Earl of Mar, One For The Vine, and plenty of instrumental goodness. There are plenty of parts in the album for each member to shine (and I think the keyboard parts/solos are very fitting for Jordan, although ATOTT's Robbbery, Assault & Battery keyboard solo would sound awesome...).
So which album would you pick? As a prediction, I'm willing to bet that ATOTT, SEBTP and Foxtrot will probably end up with a majority of the votes, but I still stick with W&W!

My favourite is Foxtrot, but they'd probably have more fun with the
Lamb. Unfortunately, I don't think they're going to get to Genesis.
There's no way they don't do a Rush album and for the fifth, Yes would
probably be more suitable.

They would most likely cover Selling England by the Pound since that is wehat most people say is the essential Genesis album plus I think its their favorite one too!

Before they started their Pink Floyd cover thet biuldt up the tension
by playing several intro's from "classic" rock albums, 2112 was one of
them. I think they are more likely to cover that one then anything by
Genesis.

Id bet that they would do Foxtrot because of the importance of Suppers Ready, along with CTTE one of the truly genre defining epics. It would also be cool to hear wht they do with Apocalypse In 9/8

I think some people are confusing the question. It's not "Which album would YOU LIKE them to cover", it's "Which album do YOU THINK they would cover", meaning, if it's an album you like, do you think they'll cover it? If so, why?
With my choice, I gave some pretty good reasons why they would choose that album. Also, it was one of the three albums they mentioned during the Live Scenes From New York DVD commentary, the other two being Lamb and Trick. They called them very good albums, and it's why I think, of those three, they'd pick W&W.
Foxtrot would be my second guess/choice that they would play if it wasn't W&W. Supper's Ready would be great to hear, and fitting for this tour since they even mention Supper's Ready in III. Full Circle (from the song, Octavarium).

I don't believe DT would like to cover a whole Genesis album, they are agressive, so they should go with the hardest and most Hard Rock oriented songs, if they cover SEBTP, they would sink with More Fool Me (Well, anybody sinks with that song) and I don't believe Petrucci would work the guitar solo as Hackett did on Firth of Fifth.
My songlist would be:
- The Knife: Strong and dark
- Musical Box: Would love to listen this track by DT
- Watcher of the Skies: A good chance for Jordan on keyboards
- Supper's Ready: I'm sure they would make an excellent work with the final instrumental section, it's so violent.
- Can-Utility and the Coastliners: Another great chance for Jordan.
- Get 'Em Out by Friday: Great changes should be a pleasure for DT.
- Los Endos: Simply I would make an excellent and more violent version of this good closer on DT style.

If Portnoy was serious about doing a Genesis album in full then I suggest he re-form Transatlantic and have a go at Foxtrot.

Why have three people vote that they would never cover Genesis, they already have coverd Turn It On Again on A Change Of Seasons, part of The Big Medley, and that song proves that there is nothing that they wouldnt cover, and do it well.

As a matter of fact, I think DT are a great cover band.... the problem arises when they play their own material! The covers on "A Change of Season", in my humble opinion, are the best thing on the album, especially "Perfect Strangers". As to their covering Genesis, I agree with those who say SEBTP is not suited to their style at all. I voted for "A Trick of the Tail", which to my mind strikes the right balance between rockier and mellower tracks.

DT are primarily a prog-metal outfit and are much more suited to covering Metallica/Maiden (as they have done) than the atmospheric prog of Genesis. It just wouldn't work in my opinion.

I don't want to even think about it, that would ruin all beauty in
Genesis music, I mean there would be mass overplaying on the drums with
no sutleties, the keyboard sounds would all be crappy 80s' tones,
Petrucci would want to solo the entire time....it would be disgusting

Have you heard their cover of 'Dark Side of the Moon'? They remain very
faithful to the original version without going over the top, in fact
they did it just about note for note correctly; though for some reason
the intro to Money was played on guitar.
As far as the original question, I'd imagine they'd do either 'Foxtrot'
or 'The Lamb'; though I'd wish for Selling England if only to hear
their take on 'The Cinema Show' and 'Firth of Fifth'. One could only dream.

I think they could cover Nursery Cryme. There are some heavier numbers
(Musical Box, Hogweed) on that one and it would be intresting to
see/hear DT:s version on them.
Allthough it is a bit hard to imagine LaBrie singing Harold The Barrel.

Who out there nowadays are like Van Der Graff Generator? I mean dual keyboards, reedman and a drummer?
I am bringing back this thread because the thought of someone covering a entire album by one of the prog greats is quite intriguing to me, especially Dream Theater. Like the Neo-Psychedelic/Progressive rock band Phish they would often cover entire albums live, and I remember reading that the band had often considered doing one of three Genesis albums: Selling England By The Pound, Abacab and A Trick Of A Tail, but when the band rehearsed a few of the songs they found out how difficult Genesis' often mistakely simple sounding songs really are...
Of all the albums that DT would cover from Genesis, I think A Trick of A Tail would be the album suited for the band one, and they would also agree on that point themselves....

The very thought appalls me. The only band that should cover Moonmadness is........ well Camel, actually. DT would make a total mess of it; the thought of Petrucci & co trying to play with the sublety and emotion of Latimer i& co is horrific. Similarly, leave Genesis to do their songs; they do them better than anyone. DT should stick to their own material. They play that better than anyone else could.

That songs are very suitable for dt, that covers would be awesome, They would have a lot of problems with the beginning of Cinema Show, for ex, or with some ballads. But this songlist is amazing and I hope that they would cover Genesis on Monday 4, here in Argentina.
