Is it prog, or does it just use ethnic scales and rhythm structures that sound progrish to us poor uneducated westeners?

I would say they are pretty progessive, and Mabool is great!

They are not only progressive metal, but one of the most original, unique prog metal bands I have heard in a long time. And Mabool is in the archives.

I don`t like the growls, I was`t thrilled with what I heard so I tossed it in the rubish bin. Life is to short to be listening to crap which is what it is (in my opinion).

Mabool is a very good piece of work IMO and progressive as they build on the introduction of middle eastern influences and the use of ancient languages combined with modern, to create a montage of different cultural perspectives.

They mix it up alot, carrying through a theme from beginning to end. I don't think the vocals are necessarily the strong point on Mabool, (imagine some of the great prog vocalists working on this) which would normally put me off, but IMO the instrumentals are rich and creative enough alone to carry it off.

There are alternating vocals on the cd.Growls, clean vocals, female vocals. You should have given it a chance. It's not ALL growling.

Sometimes I really like when a band switches the vocals from clean to growling.  Opeth is one of my 10 favorites no doubt.

Me too,Edge of Sanity's Dan Swano is also good at that.Check out Into Eternity, they alternate 3 different vocal styles(growls, clean singing, screams),most of the time using all three styles in the same song.
