Hi everyone. I have loved Sally Oldfield (especially Waterbearer) for many years now, and finally got Waterbearer on cd again and was reminded how gorgeous it is...and prog, as far as I can tell, but am wondering what everyone else thinks. More an early World Music thing? The Mike Oldfield connection is obvious, but what do you think? I can remember the day I walked into the great Blue Mouse record store in Salt Lake City, probably more than 20 years ago, walked downstairs, heard this music, looked over and saw the atmospheric beautiful cover and was sold on the spot.

Hard to tell how much was Sally and how much was brother Mike, but she wouldn't be out of place with a mention here.

I think you can call it prog. Water Bearer is a very good album!

Has anybody listened to later albums by her? I've read that they were more pop than prog.

"Waterbearer" is a classic progressive folk album. Most of her later albums
are rather MOR in feel, veering towards pop and then towards mildly
prog-ish new age later on, but still with flashes of brilliance ("Mandala", in
particular, is a wonderful song).

'Waterbearer' along with 'Easy' (which has a very ugly cover) are the two most interesting Sally Oldfield releases. The following records are much more commercial and the prog-folk touch isn' there anymore. Recently, a collection of songs Sally recorded in his teenage years with her brother Mike was issued under the title 'Sallyangie' : it is folk involving Sally and Mike on vocals, accompanied only by Mike's acoustic guitar. It is worth listening to as Sally's vocal signature was already there, contrasting with Mike's average vocals.

I didn't get into the later albums so much (but there was one other album, Celebration, that was fairly close to Waterbearer), it is very possible that I like Waterbearer so much because it came at a certain period in my life.

If Sally Oldifeld is prog then Claire Hammill should be considered as well.
