Turns out Steve Hackett nicked the title from the Enid, who had to use "In The Region Of The Summer Stars" instead. He did them a favour I reckon, much better title! It has to be said, I was very much a card carrying Enid cult member in my teens. I spent many a week at their home in Clair, Suffolk. (They've since moved several times and I emigrated and lost all touch just after "Seed and the Sower". I never met William Gilmore, bit before my time. I've posted this before, but here's me, aged 17, at 'Henge '84, with RJG and Steve Stewart.

Hey Emdiar you obviously like Robert John and all but for purely personal reasons I don't. In the summer of 1975 William Gilmour a fantastic keyboard player answered an advert in the Melody Maker whilst I was back home in Scotland being homesick from Bristol and he joined The Enid .They didn't want a vocalist nor did I fancy what they did but it's all history now and it all ended rather sadly,William and I wrote music for two years and it's a case of what might have been if I hadn't got homesick but such is life! regards John |

Interesting photograph. I've only met the IQ, Pallas and Moriarty chappies. Mr Fragile I hope your "personal" reasons aren't homophobic in nature, I have no race/creed/sexual orientation problems....The music of the Enid is Sublime, especially "Fand" a true progrock Classic. I've asked a gay friend of mine and he assures me that "keyboardist" is definitly not euphemistic gayspeek for anything. My Perception - I've never met RJG - But I've heard many a "homophobic" remark when discussing the Enid - The personal lives of musicians is purely their business, I misinterpreted the "Personal" and I apologise. RJG does get a bit of "negative" publicity in the music industry - Maybe this is just jealousy - Because as a (English born) musician and composer I would place him in the top 10 since the war! ------------- Play me my song, here it comes again |

As it says in the link I posted, "Tommy Vance, of Radio One's Friday Rock Show, once stated "Robert John Godfrey is to my mind one of the greatest composers this country has ever had"." As to his sexuality, or indeed that of any of the band, I must say it has never been an issue. emdiar Thanks for the link, that made interesting reading. I'm still getting my head around the Enid. 'In the region of the summer stars'was to be my next purchase, but I think it was on Amazon that I read it had been re-done. Although I hadn't heard the 1975 original I wanted to get my hands on it before I had the re-make. So, I'm on the hunt for vinyl!! I guess its very rare?? Great pic from 'Henge '84 too! You must have seen Hawkwind too.. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

My kid Brother has promised to mp3ificate my original "Region", but the fool went to Blighty last weekend and promptly lost his passport, and has been stuck there ever since, leaving muggins to feed his cat (He lives 40 miles away!!) Anyway, that's how together he is so I'm not holding my breath for the disc. If he comes through I'll see if I can share it online somehow. BTW, if you like the vocals on "Summer", check out their "Something Wicked This Way Comes" album which came just before it. The songs on this album are more prog than purely "classical" sounding, and were all great live favourites. "Great pic from 'Henge '84 too! You must have seen Hawkwind too.. Blacksword, one more thing, the 1982 version of "Region", with the rerecorded 'side two', is still a fantastic album, and not all the changes were for the worse. I would recommend owning both, as I do, but buy the '82 one first, that way, when you finally track down the '75 version it will be even more of a treat. ------------- Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact. |
