I was just thinking that there are some pop/Rock bands out there who think they are really bad ass, for example Green Day. But when compared to bands like Opeth, Metallica and Dream Theater they are just weak and insignificant. I hate it when band pretend to be really mean but they just put on the act to get publicity. ------------- "Let's get the hell away from this Eerie-ass piece of work so we can get on with the rest of our eerie-ass day" |

I dont see where all the Green Day hate comes from. Frankly they never
try to be something they're not, never claim to be the best band in the
world, and generally are very down to earth guys... Is it because its
popular? .. come on you can admit it They're nothing amazing or revolutionary but they release solid albums and never give into whats popular, they create music for themselves and always have.. and billie joe is quite a good song writer. They just happen to be extremely popular. -------------

I really do not think that Green Day has an ego problem. To me they are just another pop band portraying there music to the best of their ability (which is not much). Nonetheless, Green Day has a talent for writing hit songs. |

But their formula hasnt changed since their earlier (and extremely UN-successful) albums, they've simply been creating the music they always loved, and their writing styles have developed very well. I have no problem with Green Day, in fact they were one of my first obsessions in music. They recieve alot of hate here simply because they're popular. And the same would happen with any band, because its not cool to like a popular band. -------------

i would like to point out that music seems to have been going downhill since 1997 with the production of the last civilised songs ,from the wood and going for the one. and pop culture is just getting stupid

While not a fan of Green Day, I certainly can't fault them taking advantage of their popularity. And more out there than Dream Theater, there are another hundred bands even in prog metal, let alone prog rock. There's always someone more than any band anyone's likely to find. |

The only case of "pretending to be mean" that I found laughable was Avril Lavigne performing Metallica - Fuel. If they're very popular, they must be doing something right. They're only "f**king terrible" in your opinion and not everyone has the same opinion as you. Personally I think Green Day are ok. |

The key phrases here for me are "think they are really bad ass", "pretend to be really mean" and "put on an act". This for me is the big difference between the progressive rock of the 70's and the metal/punk/alternative/hip-hop music of the last 15 years or so. There was no such thing as attitude back then (I don't consider attitude-laden glam-rock part of the progressive movement). The musicians let their instruments and compositional skills do the talking. Nowadays, simply substitute in-your-face screaming and cliched, distorted guitar chord progressions. It makes the powerless, blue-collar, uneducated kids feel powerful and hip, and helps them "belong". Oops! I'm hyperventilating! Actually, I do like to listen to a lot of abrasive, loud music; the difference is, it's creative, not carbon-copy; the lyrics are thought-provoking, not neanderthal cynicism; and the artists are interested in presenting new sounds. I have nothing against any of the groups mentioned, but I won't be buying any of their products. They're the kind of musicians who, when they turned 16 and were initially inspired by some band to form their own group, said "That's the kind of music I'm gonna do!".... I'd rather listen to music done by someone who would say "I really love this band, but I respect them enough not to steal their ideas; I'm going to come up with something original." And the way to do that is to listen to TONS of music in various styles, both good and bad. They'll never sell many records, but they'll have credibility and the respect of those who know music that "rings true".
