Is anyone on this board familiar with the Norwegian band Madder Mortem? They play a very angular yet melodic gothic progressive metal with a very Scandinavian sound that reminds me of a keyboardless Anekdoten or early The 3rd and the Mortal. There's even a bit of Opeth there, which was probably the reason why they were asked to tour with them. Lead singer Agnete Kirkevaag has an incredible powerful voice, her Grace Slick-like vocals, her melody lines and the way she harmonizes with herself are very contemporay in a late sixties way (another reason for the Grace Slick comparison). And then there's the interplay between dual guitar and bass with counterpoint and rhytmic tricks.

I've listened god knows how many times to "Deadlands" and I still find new musical tidbits to discover and enjoy. I have this with only a few bands (like Anglagard for instance). That's a sign of a great record IMO.

You can find review of Madder Mortem's "Deadlands" on other prog sites, like

I've put two songs from Deadlands here:

(In AAC format which you can play in iTunes amongst others)

I've added one song from "All Flesh is Grass":
http://flatearth.tweakdsl.nl/traitors_mark.m4a (including the guitar coda)

plus from "Mercury"
http://flatearth.tweakdsl.nl/grinding_silence.mp3

Mercury is their debut CD and is most like the 3rd and the Mortal and The Gathering.

BTW I'd love to hear how other prog fans like this band. I sometimes feel like I'm the only prog fan who knows and loves this band.

Saw them supporting Opeth in Birmingham (I think?) some years ago. Good stuff
