Yes, there are many artists who are very good with the flute but I consider Ian and Thjis to be the two best with many others very very very close behind as far as talent.  But between these two, who is better In Your Opinion?  BTW:  I am also Carl! on these forums but i remembered my password for this name today and decided to go back to this one .

Thijs (not Thjis) van Leer, definitely.

I think Anderson is the better player, but I prefer the music of Focus.

When it comes to the flute I'd rather listern to Andy Latimer of Camel or Peter Gabriel than either of the above.

Close call, but I went for Van Leer. His recent contribution to Uriah Heep's Magician's Birthday Party concert was immense.

Is it true he's currently unable to play flute due to probems with his mouth?

I voted for Ian only because I haven't heard much of Focus., but what little I have heard I wasn't overwhelmed with awe over Van Leer's flute

I believe the two had a great level, I understand Thijs had a stroke and isn't playing.

Ian has a wonderful British folky style and Thijs creates a unique atmosphere that transports the listener to to the medieval Flanders and blends with the magic guitar of Jan Ackerman.

I also like the style of Peter Gabriel, more eclectic but ideal for his music but lately I would go with Anna Holmgren, who mixes all the styles as if it wasreally easy.

So I can't choose between them, both are N° 1 in my list.

They are both good, but don't play in the same style

By the way, who plays flute on "i talk to the wind" by KC?

Anderson by far, the flute Hendrix.

There is a harmonica equivelant, John Popper or Blues Traveller, you could say that he's the Eddie Van Halen of the Harmonica.

Astounding almost unbelievable technique.

Kollar Attila from SOLARIS is also a hell of a flute player, handling the same polished delicateness on recorder and Hungarian folky flutes on his solo album 'Musical Witchcraft'... let alone the Solaris records.

I won't vote on Ian or Thijs because it would break my heart to choose one of them; anyway, this poll should have included a larger number of flute players.

Ahhh! Thijs is recovered, so he's playing flute again...

They're both incredible, but if only for Van Leer's solo on "Birth", it has to be he.

I think Ian is technically the better 'rock' flutist, but Peter Gabriel and Ray Thomas are close runners up. I still haven't heard Focus, so I don't know who that other guy is...

Thijs van Leer was my vote. A close call though, both have long careers in Prog Rock and maybe the factor that determined my vote was a record I owned once : Thijs van Leer - PAVANE

Andy Latimer did some fantastic flute lines with Camel. Premiata did also some fine flute lines in their music.

At the concert in Rio de Janeiro last year, Thijs told us that he couldnt play flute due to a paralysis of the Trigemius Nerve in the lower left side of his face. (Normally caused by stress, alcool abuse , and even strokes). He did though play one tune, but was assisted by a brazilian flute player from a local prog band.

Mauro Pagani of PFM added some lovely flute/woodwind to some of their songs. Like Andy Latimer and Peter Gabriel his playng never out-stayed it's welcome.

Whoops, I completely forgot Andy Latimer. His work on the early(and even later) Camel albums always were a highlight to the songs. Darn it...now it's a tie between Peter Gabriel, Andy Latimer, and Ian Anderson..can't decide..can't decide...!

IAN ANDERSON PERIOD... I LIKE THE WAY GABRIEL DID HIS SOLO FLUTES, SADLY I CANNOT MAKE AN OPINION ABOUT THE OTHER CONTENDER...I HAVEN'T HEARD HIM YET...BUT I GUESS HE'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD. BY THE WAY WHY IS NOT GABRIEL IN THE POLL?

THAT'S RIGHT!! Flutist/violinist extraordinaire MAURO PAGANI would have been a hell of an option. His playing in the first 4 PFM albums was exquisite, colourful, varied, precise, energetic. But again, this Italian band was not as famous as JT, Camel, Genesis or Focus, so no wonder he hadn't appeared listed on this poll. The same goes for the late flute player in Supersister - his lines and improvs were both exquisite and funny.

Thijs van Leer gets my vote. Focus got me into progressive rock music. It is just too bad that Akkerman and Van Leer don`t get along anymore.  It is great to see Pierre van der Linden on drums again though.

Unfortunately, I do not know Van Leer or have heard him...I certainly would like to. Any song suggestions? Anyways, my vote goes to Ian, but I really like the flutist from Moody Blues and Peter Gabriel.

Ian Andersons!!

No discussion!!

Van Leer is technically better and more adventurous than Anderson. Tull are a great band and extremely popular but Anderson is a very good flautist, nothing special.Latimer and Gabriel are not as technically gifted but play very melodically.

But, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until people get the message:

JIM LOCKHART OF HORSLIPS IS THE KING OF THE FLUTE.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

Ian McDonald, i think. Mel Collins took over sax and flute stuff on "Islands" and possibly "Lizard".

I voted for Anderson but only due to the lack of music i've heard by Focus. Pierre Moerlen is in my opinion better then both of them.
