My dad used to have Slade Alive on vinyl.  He saw it in the store on CD a few months ago and decided to get it for the memories.

The first album I bought, ooh, with my own money, I have no idea.  I had been given and bought a few CDs when I was younger (RHCP - Californication, Smash Mouth - Astro Lounge), but I didn't really take an interest in music until I was about 15.

The first single I bought would have to be a vinyl one (didn't ever buy a CD one).  I bought about 6 at once, 2 Alan Parsons Project ones and 4 Santana ones.  One of the Santana ones turned out to be the best $0.50 I ever spent.  It had Aqua Marine on it, an amazing, funky instrumental.

I suppose I could tell you the first LP album though, 'cause I remember that.  It was Twin Guitars in a Mood for Lovers by Los Indios Tabajaras.

As I recall, the first single I bought was The Beatles' 'Real Love' which came out when that whole Beatles Anthology hoo-hah was going on. Many fans don't like the 'new' songs that came out, but I rather liked it and its predecessor 'Free As A Bird' and still do.

Unbelievably the first album may well have been 'Selling England By The Pound', which I bought around 1994 when I was 6(!); I think the reason I got into Genesis was after seeing some documentary on them on TV or some such. Whatever, it set a prog precedent that's lasted about 12 years, more or less.

Sgt Pepper album, I was 10. My older sister had all the other Beatle albums.

First single was Louie, Louie by the Kingsman. I was 8.

Getting old, I guess.

My first album was "Billion Dollar Babies" by Alice Cooper. I got into that after I got a freebie disc of "Slick Black Limousine" in either NME or Melody Maker.

I don't remember what my first single was, possibly something by Slade.

I joined Columbia House in 1983 when I was 14. So I actually bought five albums for a dollar (or a penny?). I can only remember three of them: Yes: 90125; Genesis: Genesis; ELO: Secret Messages. Keep in mind, I didn't even know what prog was. I went the classic rock route and eventually discovered the earlier releases of Genesis and Yes. It wasn't until the early 1990's that I discovered this type of music was called prog rock.

The first single (45 rpm) I ever bought was Pink Floyd's Money/Any Colour You Like. I wanted it so that I could here the censoring of one particular word in the song. Even though the single was released in 1973, it was still available in the mid 1980's.

Single, Red Rubber Ball by somebody called Cyrkle. I was about 9 or 10.

Album: Strangely enough, probably something by the Ventures. Good musicians, strange music for today.

As Marktheshark said, I'm getting old. But, I've heard some great music in my life!

I had asked for Kiss "Alive II" for Christmas in 1976. That was a rocking Christmas for that little 8 year old boy who grew up to be me.

My first single I ever bought was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Refuge" in 1979. My friend and I went to the shopping mall and after buying my single we spent the rest of our money at the arcade playing "Pong" and "Space Invaders", Sadly I forgot my Tom Petty single at the arcade on one of the video game machines. Funny thing is I never re-purchased that single or ever bought Tom Petty "Damn the Torpedoes" Album, or any Tom Petty album after that.

First album I ever bought was Green Day's Dookie, when I was about nine.
I still quit enjoy most of it (their second-best next to American Idiot IMO),
but I didn't develop a music obsession until about seven years later.

Only single I ever bought was Coldplay's The Scientist, when my
obsession was just starting - I AM embarrassed about that one!

I remember that I was given my first singles when I was about 4 or 5, there was Pat Boone with "Tutti Frutti" amongst them and something strange with the title "Kleine Schlagerparty mit Dalida" (four songs on a vinyl-single), which fortunately didn't affect my taste for music. The first single I actually bought some years later was "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies , if I'm not mistaken.

The first albums (also gifts) were "Abbey Road" by The Beatles and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. The first I bought was "Hair - The Original Broadway Cast Recording".

"Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" LP, "Good Vibrations" single by the Beach Boys. In 1966 after much nagging i persuaded my Dad to buy the family a record player - we got a PAM with an autochanger, 30 guineas was a lot of money in 1966! I recently had it restored, new valves/cartridge, and the old girl is now working perfectly, including the autochanger. I love playing all my old singles on it.Smile

My first album was definitely a Beatles album. I bascially took ownership of all Mom's Beatles albums, and then bought whatever she was missing, so the first one I bought was either Beatles for Sale or Rubber Soul.

First single...hmmm. I honestly have no idea. I remember having singles as a kid, but don't recall what any of them were. As for purchasing records myself, if EP's count, it might have been Wall of Voodoo's self-titled four-track with The Passenger and Ring of Fire. Otherwise, maybe Flipper's Love Canal/Ha Ha Ha.

To date me as ancient, the first album and single I bought with my own hard earned money:

the first Hollies album
Buddy Holly/Crickets: Peggy Sue
in a special trip to London's main HMV store, and being amazed that the Buddy Holly single was still available there 5 or 6 years after it was a hit.

However, the first album and single I was given:

the first Shadows album -  still listen to it - and Santo & Johnny's Sleepwalk.

And first classical: Czech Supraphon Records recording of Debussy's La Mare and Fete - after seeing Ken Russell's impressive Claude Debussy film biography on the Beeb (starring Oliver Reed).
