Why not rate the best guitarplayers ever? Dont mind genres, I dont.

1. Jimmy Page, why? Maybe not the best player if you mind the technic, but he is the most elegant, rough and innovative players of them all!!! The best guitarwork/riff: maybe is "kashmir" but I also say "when the leeves break" or perhaps "battle of evermore" Blues/rock/folk has never and will never sound better

2.  Jimi Hendrix, offcours, psykedelia, blues and rock n roll, he mastered them all, simply the most gifted man when he was alive, my idea is that he never fulfilled his potential and will be missed forever, thats why he is second.  Best Guitarwork/riff: "vodoo child" and "little wing"

3. Pete Townshend, the king of power and volume, easily the most intelligent of all rockgods and often a hilarious man, the who is the best live band ever, and its not all because of pete but he´s guitarwork measures up everything thats good about rock, volume, power and energy and maybe som resentfulness. Best work/riff: all of "live att leeds", "wont get fooled again" "substitute"

4. mick taylor of the stones, maybe a different choice, but he is man who sets the jagger/richards composition to its most attractive way of playing it off, a wonderful sound and the work never gets old. Best riff/work: all of "Get yer ya ya`s out"

5. Stewe howe, probably the most gifted in guitartechnics of the five mentioned. innovative is the word. Best work/riff all of "close to the edge" and "yours is no disgrace" on "yessongs", that bit when he makes the guitar sound like everything but a guitar and inte the same note makes its sound like rock n roll is too f....... good!!!!

I have always loved the sound from Steve Hackett: it is rooted in the emotional blues, then Hackett got impressed by the Fripperian 'chainsaw sound' and eventually Hackett developped his very distinctive guitar play featuring sensitive and varied soli, heavily distorted or with subtle use of the volume pedal and techniques like glissando and hammering. This man has carried me so often away to Progheaven!

Pre-heroin Clapton is essential and I would add John Scofield.

zappa's got to be up there with all the others mentioned- but i love holdsworths straight playing -ie-no synthaxe. steve lukather is amazing to watch and you cant beat larry carlton's great fat sound. in the blues idiom i like winter and walter trout is surprisingly handy. best is best is best-- its really a matter of personal taste,is it not?

I mentioned him.

One of my personal favorite guitarists.... I admire his ability of being a virtuoso on guitar AND keyboard, as well as being very versatile on guitar. Not to forget his technical ability is just incredible. Chromaticity is just as good as Maximum Security if not better, in my opinion. Listen to Christmas Island.... SICK!!

^ I was fortunate to see SRV the tour before he died. He opened for Jeff Beck.  You talk about a blues fest.  SRV and JB played about a 20 minute encore together.  What a night!  I have seen JB three times and twice it was another great guitarist.  The first was John Mclaughlin on the Visions of Emerald Beyond MO tour and Beck was touring on the Blow By Blow tour. Yes they jammed on a blue number for Beck's encore.  The third time I saw him was with Jan Hammer.    JB might not be the fastest or technacly brilliant but his chops are tastyand  I like his work with just about anyone.

he is married to Korean audio artist Grace Yoon, for whose air plays he contributed the soundtracks. a very interesting project they (and a lot of other musicians, among them Holger Czukay of Can, Uli Bassenge of Embryo and Robert Fripp. Swiss avantgarde poet Ernst Jandl was also part of that project) took part in is "Die Goldberg Variationen" (not to be confused with the variations of the same name by J. S. Bach). a very interesting album, but only for those who understand German. full of strange humor and excellent music

I have one more guitartist who rarely if ever gets a mention, Michael Rother. I love his unique sound in all works I've heard him in, although on his later solo records, he delves into more electronics and less guitar, still good nonetheless.

Here is one way to look at. Steve Howe is the only guitar player ever to be voted "Best Overall Guitarist" five years in a row by "Guitar Magazine".
He is also the only "rock" guitarist to be voted into the Guitar Guild or whatever it is. That was then, and this is now. I think Petrucci is one hell of a player as well. There are so many good players. It's just a matter of taste.
