I sit here stunned listening to Wolf City by Amon Düül II. This is an unbelievable album. I just got the album today in the mail. I've been waiting since early december for amazon to import the album, but it was worth the wait. So right now on impulse i'm going to order another one of their albums. What should it be? tanz der lemminge or phallus dei

Of those two, opt for "Tanz Der Lemminge", although both are outstanding. Their other must-haves are "Yeti" and "Live In London", although all of their first six studio albums (the remaining ones being "Carnival In Babylon" and "Vive La Trance") are superb. |

yeah, yeti looks like its going to be pretty expensive. but ill see if i can find it. is yeti considered their best?

IMO it's worth it... and as far as being best? That's like asking which of my three kids I love most... Ask 3 people and you'd probably get three different answers between Phallus Dei, Yeti, and Tanz Der Lemminge. The cop out is to get all three hahahha. Also get the self-titled album of Utopia (See entry in the database here: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=1996 ) It was recorded at the same time as "Wolf City", when Amon Düül 2 split up due to a fight. One half started recording "Wolf City", the other half formed "Utopia" and created that album. But they made peace again while recording these albums, so all members of Amon Düül 2 play on both albums. This explains the guest musicians (Jimi Jackson and Olaf Kuebler, for example) on "Wolf City". And one song ("Deutsch Nepal") was such a favourite of them all that it appears on both albums, although in different versions. -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

Wolf City is wow great! But I would say go for Phallus Dei if you like psychedelic stuff, it's terrific!!! I have not listened to Yeti in its entirety but Lemmings is also very good, although it has some too noisy and hard to deal with stuff on its second disc (it was also double LP originally). As Friede mentioned, Utopia is also great, but be sure to check also Vive le Trance, often overlooked but great album for me. was reading the liner notes from Tanz Der Lemminge.... had never heard about that fire at their show in Munich. Talk about a personal and group financial tragedy. Great that they soldiered on after losing everything it sounds like. Wolf City is a really great album, but I never warmed to the rest of ADII. Probably a bit too psychedelic for me. But Sleepwalkers Timeless Bridge and Jailhouse Frog are stone cold classics! |

thanks for the head's up... AD II is, along with Magma, my favorites amoung the 'non-symphonic' prog groups. I'll keep my eyes open for it. funny I was reading some internet albums reviews this evening.. this frrom Ground and Sky "I consider Tanz der Lemminge (Dance of the Lemmings) to be a great album and Amon Düül II's finest record. Musically, it completes a journey begun on Phallus Dei and exhibits a level of sophistication and range that Yeti only provided in limited doses. True, Yeti is louder, scarier and generally more frenzied, but I find that the musical refinement and greater consistency of Tanz more than make up for this. Plus, it's not as if Amon Düül had compromised their vision — Tanz is still creepy and gothic — it's just that they shifted gears somewhat. For the most part, Tanz is like walking through a haunted house; Yeti is like being chased through one." hahahhah come to think of it... Mmm.. maybe you should buy them all :) The older ones that is. The title song of Phallus Dei is a good listen, most of Yeti of which Archangels Thunderbird, She came through the chmney and Eye-shaking belong to the best they made, Tanz is not really one of my favourites, Carnival neither, Utopia again more and Wolf a highlight (but you already know that). Most beautiful ADII song imho though is Lemmingmania, the title song of a compilation and the only one on that album not earlier released (a nice album to get some highlights if you don't want to buy them all). Vive la Trance has some high lights (apocalyptic bore), forget more or less about the rest, although Made in Germany is rather ok, just not Genuine Krautrock ADII anymore. Enjoy exploring ADII, as an old fart there is not so much that can get me to musical euphoria anymore, but ADII for sure could and I nearly equal it to the good old Captain (Beefheart that is).
