I have barely heard anything from this genre. Can I get some recommendations on good albums/bands to start with? ------------- If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks! |

Early Anathema (pre-Eternity) is great, so is any of Amorphis' early stuff (pre-Tuonela) |

There is a huge breadth of subgenres within this; although they do have differences they generally aren't so important. Loosely speaking: funeral doom is very, very heavy and slow with screaming vocals drone doom (or ambient) is not so heavy, often ambient and usually without vocals (often without drums) doomdeath and blackened doom are doom mixed with either death or doom metal - doomdeath probably contains the most well known bands with early Anathema, My Dying Bride and (I can't remember the name of the other big one!  ). They tend towards a bit of a cheesy gothic feel sometimes which can be a little offputting. traditional doom basically sounds like Sabbath, Trouble etc. Armed with that information, have a look at www.doom-metal.com

This is my list of beloved Doometal artists there's a mix here of classic doom, doomdeath and funeral doom): Candlemass Carpathian Full Moon Confessor Daylight Dies Draconian Swallow The Sun Electric Wizard Esoteric Grief Interitus Dei Khanate Left Hand Solution Mar De Grises The Obsessed (another one with the great Scott Wino) Pentagram Place Of Skulls Runemagick St. Vitus Shape Of Despair Sheavy (vintage doom stoner rock) Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy (excellent!) Sleep Solitude Aeturnus (first two albums are essential, after that it gets mediocre) Solstice (New Dark Age is very good) Spirit Caravan (another Wino band) Thergothon (funeral doom) Virgin Black (amazing, great. not your avarage doom, there is so much more there. must have!)
There are so much more. Try some Doom specialized sites (search in google "doom metal" and also go to http://www.bnrmetal.com - http://www.bnrmetal.com and there you can see bands by genre.

My dying Bride are already in there Paradise Lost are considered more of gothic metal, but if you consider them doom I agree Anathema's first ones are good, but not essential IMO |

Esoteric-The Pernicious Enigma (Death/Doom) UK Dolorian-s/t (Atmospheric Death/Doom) FIN Evoken-Embrace the Emptiness (Death/Doom) US Shape of Despair - Illusion's Play (Funeral Doom) FIN Mournful Congregation-The Monad of Creation (Funeral Doom) OZ Skepticism - Farmakon (Funeral Doom) FIN There's loads more bands worthy of a listen, but those come to mind right away. And yeah, i dig the newer darker stuff the mostest, heh. |

a few recommendations I'd give: Cathedral - forest of equilibrium (traditional doom mandatory, great stone golum vocals by Mr. Dorian, which they never changed their style from this album) Penance - Road Revisited (more traditional doom, great slow plodding music with an angry edge) Disembowlment - transcendence into the peripheral (echo drone doom/death masterpiece, with a nice experimental leaning) Esoteric - any (one of the best bands of their kind, swirling cosmic psychedelic Doom) Bunkur - bludgen (raw, avantgarde, droning ritualistic torturous sludge, Hellhammer meets Abruptum, no joke!, definitely not for all) Grief - any (one of my personal favorites, extracting the hate, siimple slow screaming doom trudge, nothing more nothing less) Bedemon - child of darkness (maybe proto-doom? I dont f**king know,...side band of Pentagram recodings from 1973-79, like to hear a darker more raw sounding pentagram and sabbath? check this slab out) |

Cryptal Darkness - They Whispered You Had Risen (contains one of the most beautiful instrumental ever written)
Anathema do atmospheric rock/metal since the Eternity album, though at the moment they got no record deal and have to produce themselves. Paradise Lost do gothic metal... the "Symbol Of Life" album sounds a bit like mid period Metallica (with Nick Holmes trying to do Hetfield like vocals) while the last album is some sort of transitional album like "Believe In Nothing" so we'll see... ------------- Destiny... well I don't quite agree...
Anathema now are doing sth between Radiohead, Coldplay and Brit sh*t
They used to do atmospheric rock/metal until Judgement
Paradise Lost are trying to get back to gothic metal but are still far away... just commercial happy songs IMO

Listened to Dolorian only because it appeared after Esoteric, and I'm very impressed by the s/t.
Their sound is unique(at least i haven't heard similar stuff), and they are very recommended.

To me, one of the most memorabl doom metal albums of all time, probably because it has some prog elements as well, is Memento Mori's 'Life, Death and other morbid Tales', featuring Snowy Shaw (ex King Diamond and Mercyful Fate) on drums and Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) on vocals.
