Have you ever bought an album that you just truly hated at first listen, then through time it started to grow on you?

For me it was Falling into Infinity-Dream Theater. The first time I heard it, it just sounded like a dis jointed mess! I actually forced myself to listen to it a few times to try make some sense of it. After about 10 listens it finally started to sound better and better. The guitar solo in Lines in the sand is probably one of Petrucci´s most slow and emotional solos ever. Now I can´t imagine not having this CD in my collection

Has anyone else had this experience and with which album?

The first time I listened to The Wall by Pink Floyd, I was very, very disappointed: no long compositions, no long soli, songs with pop and rock and at that moment I was confused by the concept from Waters. But I had to listen to it because all my friends loved it and eventually I started to appreciate The Wall. And I even joined my friends on their trips to London and Dortmund (Germany) to witness Pink Floyd playing The Wall live, mindblowing experiences! And I just posted an All Time Progrock Album Top 10 topic featuring ... The Wall  .. an album I hated at first and I loved at last!

Same thing happened to me when I bought King Crimson's Starless and Bible Black..my first experience with KC was their first album which was OK for me..but knowing some years later that Bruford and Wetton joined Fripp and recorded 4 albums was something I wanted to own..looking back I'm glad the only one I found at the little record store was Starless..I just simply love it..first time I listened to it I was like "what the heck was this chaos?"..now it's probably my favorite KC album followed by Larks and Red

I wasn't too keen on Maida Vale BBC Sessions by Van Der Graaf Generator, but it's grown a bit on me.  The singer's voice is still a little odd though.

Thrak by King Crimson

the first time I heard it, I couldnt believe I had just spend 14 dollars on such a chaotic piece of crap. Then a few months later, I grabbed any old cd and took it with me for a run. I didnt realize what cd i had, but when I was listening to it, I really started to enjoy it. The song Dinosaur was great. I dont care too much for Belew's vocals, but they arent bad. The guitar on this album esspecially is fantastic. Who would think to put dinosaur noises in a song? Its so origional and creative.

Alot of King Crimson's work takes some getting used to. Another perfect example is The ProjeKcts. Improvisation is a beautiful thing.

Vital by Van der Graaf. It was harsh, loud, and had some really out-of-tune guitar. But, I could tell there was some sort of intelligence behind it - as if, even though it had all of the qualities I just mentioned, it was meant to be *exactly* what it was. At the time, though, I didn't like punk either. I slowly developed a taste for some punk and now I absolutely love Vital. It rocks, and it's as much a punk album as it is a prog album (to me, anyway).

The funny thing is that my first VdGG album (bought in the early 80's) was Aerosol from '69 and I liked that a lot. My second was Vital... what a shock to the system; couldn't believe it was the same band (well, at least two of 'em).

Foxtrot definitely did it for me. It was one of the first prog albums I heard which wasn't by Pink Floyd (Last summer) but it has really grown on me since then. I just found it boring the first couple of listens. Then I suddenly felt like listening to it more and more. But I never forced myself to listen to it.

A PASSION PLAY - At first, I thought "What an inferior, meandering, boring follow up to THICK AS A BRICK."  I didn't think it was at all memorable, and the story of the hare who lost his spectacles seemed to be a final slap in the face.  However, it's the kind of album that grows on you... I still think it's inferior to THICK AS A BRICK, but not by as wide a margin as before.  I actually enjoy the album these days...

Season's End, the first Marillion album with Steve Hogarth.  Couldn't get into his vocal for a long time.  Now I listen to it frequently.

I also find most Genesis albums take a few listens before you get into them.. Most prog music isn't instantly accessible, it isn't supposed to be, Genesis I find particularly like this.  These slow burners are often the best though.

It's because you don't get tired of them as fast. Their complexity means there's something to discover on each new listen!

I've hated every single Yes album the first time I listened to it - now I only hate Union, and don't think that'll change in a hurry...

And I agree with you, Chris Kemp - it's precisely because there's more depth than the run of the mill stuff that you have to let the music insinuate its way into your mind over a period of time...

  • The Yes Album - Disliked at first, love it now.
  • Passion Play  - Took a very long tome to grow on me
  • Blond Guardian's Nightfall in Middle Earth - Wasn't impressed at first, took two months to realize it was a masterpiece.

Thought it was absolutely terrible at first, but grew to really like it.

Passion Play is one of those "inacessible" albums that I loved from the first second I heard it. I still think it's a masterpiece!! Same goes for Gentle Giant and Zappa stuff.

Anyway, besides Gong - You, Strawbs - Grave New World was also an album I didn't quite like when I first heard it, but now, I think it's excellent!

Relayer by Yes was tough for me at first, Gates just sounded like a big mess to me.  I had to really "work" at that album, but was rewarded in appreciating it for the master work it is.

That album would have been even better if Kevin Gilbert hadn't died,he would have probably got the job and I think Genesis would have been the better for it.

Same, I thought the whole bit with "this is the story of the hare who lost his spectacles" was ridiculous, but then again I could repeat the whole scene by the third listen, which made it much more enjoyable. The music proceeding the animals introduction is awesome as well when given a closer listen (the hare, with that little sax bit...awesome)

Other albums include:

Meddle by Pink Floyd

Godbluff by Van Der Graaf Generator

Mekanik Destrktiw Kommandoh by Magma

Larks Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson

Hemispheres by Rush

Others i'm still trying to love:

Kallocain by Paatos (Just doesn't have the same energy as the debut, a real downer with excellent music in between, like the outros to certain songs)

Nucleus by Anekdoten (This record seems too cacaphonous)

Ummagumma Disc 2 by Pink Floyd (Too much nonsense on this disc, the first disc is some awesome psycadelia)

In a Glass House by Gentle Giant (Absolutely in love with Acquiring the Taste & Octopus)

Heresie by Univers Zero (I am definetely missing why this is really good I guess)

Black Oni by Guapo (I loved Five Suns, but this album has "middle child" syndrome with me)

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra

like any good prog fan I didn't give up on it, and over the course of 6 months I first warmed to it,  then came to really like it.  Figured it was a classic for a reason, and if I didn't catch why... I needed to listen more to it.

For some reason I hated Nursery Cryme by Genesis, even thought I enjoyed so much Trespass, Foxtrot and SEBTP... But after somyears, I realized that it was only "The Musical Box" which I thought was too "common" but I enjoy very much the rest of the album!

Ummagumma. I really didnt like this album too much. I always liked other Pink Floyd a lot. After listening to it, over n over, I have grown to like it as much as I like DSotM and Meddle. Espically The Narrow Way.

Van der Graaf's Pawn Hearts was one of the hardest for me to come around to.  When I first heard it, my only other Prog exposure had been Yes and Genesis, whose albums are the epitomes of structure and balance.  And all of a sudden comes this ugly thing with its blistering intensity and its off-kilter, unsymmetrical forms.  It really took me a while to appreciate Hammill's esoteric songwriting on this album and grasp the nuances.  But while its not my fav VDGG release (kudos to Godbluff) it now ranks very highly in my playlist.

Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante and a fair deal of the VDGG catalogue. "Hate" is not the right word to use though, "confused" and "uninterested" (respectively) would be far more fitting for my picks.
