i've been a DT fan for a while now, and i just recently got into Symphony X

Ive been comparing John' and Michael's guitar styles lately and i'm wondering your guys opinions on these two outstanding guitarists.  a few weeks ago i would have preferd John over Mike, but i think ive switched to prefer Mike recently.  John's playing seems to always circulate around a few chromatic shredding runs, his technical mastery over the instrument is out of this world, but his tone and his machine like approach to playing gets a little irritating.  Michael on the other hand has suprisingly tasteful solo's and great tone.  no doubt he can play as fast as anyone in the world, but he seems to always have a good amount of improvisation in his solos.  his playing in general is incredible tight yet loose and fluid at the same time. (think evolution (the grand design))

they are both very good...

i'd give the edge to romeo, but thats just my preference. he plays a lot of neoclassical stuff ala yngwie, but he is better in the sense that he has good rhythym parts, and can use phrasing and tastefulness alot better than yngwie. the whole band are top notch, they do get a little cheesy at times, but overall its good stuff. the odyssey is incredible.

no doubt petrucci is a master also, he is definitely right up there.

here are some michael romeo demonstrations:

There both fantastic musicians but I find considerably more variaty in Patrucci's playing than I do in MJR's. Sym X have far to many songs that sound very similar (think all there 5 minute songs) and he does dominate the sound of the band.

I don`t believe there is a best in this debate , both are as great as each other  (though I prefer Romeo by a whisker)

Michael Romeo for me!
Both are very good in technique, MJR maybe even a bit more, but John Petrucci also he is really fast and has some cool licks and riffs, has never been something really special for me.

And thanks for the links Blind Camel,
this one is quite cool as well : http://youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7Xfk6r2tU&search=michael%20%20romeo - http://youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7Xfk6r2tU&search=michael%20%20r omeo

Wow.. This is sure a subjective question...

Well, I am more of a petrucci fanz, of course i'll give it to Petrucci...

But comparing musicians is alittle difficult..

Its more of a style really.. There is no better or worse in music in my opinion. It will be better if you put this question as who's style is more popular among ppl.. Petrucci or Micheal?

Cheers mate!

Personally,I prefer Petrucci.

But Romeo is no slouch either.

Im not a big shreder fan...so Petrucci and Romeo aren´t my favorite. Yet I must say I prefer Petrucci, because he does or trys to do different thinks in each song, where as Romeo always goes as fast as humanly possible...I never heard a Romeo solo that wasn´t "not" fast...I think that´s something he can not do, play slow...Im pretty sure he can´t help it to go a 100 km/h...

I'd have to go with Petrucci simply because his playing is more diverse....at least comparing Symphony X albums to Dream Theater albums.

Now, within the context of METAL only...I'd give that to Romeo (especially compared to the recent DT material).  However, I've not heard Romeo do anything except SymX so I don't what else he can pull off.

I like Petrucci's style much more. Romeo is pretty good, but SymX doesn't move me nearly as much as DT.

Definately Petrucci, he has much more variation and clarity in his tone and his playing.  Petrucci's done everything from Fusion Jazz Metal with LTE to classical shread with JP and JR.  His tone clear, and the listener can hear every note.  His style is one that's built around clean playing.  Romeo is a decent player, but he's very sloppy especially with his solos.  I'll give the edge to Petrucci for his clean playing.

Dude two of my absolute favorites

This is like asking me which parent will live and which won't.

I simply can not choose.

I knew about and loved Petrucci for far longer than I have Romeo though.  I always listened to DT but never even knew about the fact that they were "Progressive"  I didn't have much knowledge about the genre at all and just thought there was Rock and Metal, and nothing diff.

Upon discovering Progressive I also discovered Prog Metal and thusly Symphony X and adore Michael Romeo's playing.   I just can't choose, although if we're talkin' about long-time liking here then Petrucci simply because I knew he exsisted longer hehe.

Slow solos: Shades of Grey, Candlelight Fantasia, Sonata, Lady of the Snow, Egypt, The Odyssey, Dawn of a Million Souls and several songs with the band "Phantom's Opera"!

And his speed is different... His fastest stuff are e.g. the solo in "King of Terrors". There are many fast solos of him that are only half as fast as this one...

And I hate the arguments, that guitarists are bad because they play fast. What would you do if you could play really fast and play metal? Maybe you would think "Oh, why should I have fun, I should better play 0,3 notes per second, it's not very demanding for me, but I should do it beceause some people's restricted minds..."
