The middle riff of this track reminds me strongly of something else and I cannot place it... I think it maybe a Derek Trucks Band tune, but it could also be a Queen tune... can somebody help me with this dilemma? It's one of the above two bands. If it is Queen, which came first? This help is much appreciated. Oh and the bootleg version from the Toronto '76 concert rocks! Just wish I had the full concert or at least the Darkness '76 bootleg. -------------

It is a VdGG riff! It appears in the song "Rift Valley" that can be heard on the album "Time Vaults", which contains some lost material. (Hoping we talk about the same riff). -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

I've definitely heard it elsewhere, I need another listen! Maybe we're talking about a different riff here... the riff I am talking about does not start until a fair way into the track. Having yet to hear "Rift Valley", I cannot say if it's the same riff as I am talking about. It's either from "Ibrahim" by Queen, the first track on their "Jazz" album, or it's from Derek Trucks Band and off a track from their "Joyful Noise" album. I shall get back to you on this. Edit: Derek Trucks Band - Kam-ma-lay. I believe that's where I've heard it. This is from 2003 or something, so VdGG had it first. -------------

Geck0, Queen's 'Mustapha' is probably the song you are thinking about. It came out on 'Jazz' in '78. The wonderful 'Meurglys III' is from 'World Record' and that album is from '76. That's because I mean Derek Trucks Band - Kam-ma-lay. The riff I mean runs from 8 to 12 minutes (approx.) in the original version on World Record. I've just played both and they're very similar. I think it maybe a Latin-American riff or something, as the Derek Trucks Band song has vocals sung by Rúben Blades. And yes, I did mean Mustapha and you're probably current Rocktopus, I've not heard Mustapha in about 8 years or so. I'm pretty sure pH used it first, I was just curious, as I knew I had heard it somewhere before. Thank you for the assistance Friede. -------------

Memorable lines - and I should ask another question, perhaps quite obvious - the closing, instrumental part is very similar to reggae, isn't it?? That's what I call genius start with fugue, then ingenious song about solitude and end with reggae - all in one track, I wish Peter wrote something similar for Present. ------------- yet you still have time! |

The ending reminds me also of the ending of a Neil Young track (the last on on the Zuma album if memory serves), with the style of guitar. I could be wrong with this though. Gov't Mule do an amazing version of "Lively Up Yourself" in concert. I personally love "Meurgly's III (The Songwriter's Guild)", but a lot of people don't seem to rate World Record too highly, I think it's an excellent album and for once, they haven't put the longest track as the last track. An underrated album for sure. -------------

Thank you RaphaelT. World Record is definitely underrated. I don't think people underate it per sé, but they just don't like it as much as VdGG's previous efforts and I think it's on par with them easily. It is also the last album by the classic lineup. There is not a bad album or track by the classic lineup in my opinion. Opinions differ though, I understand that. Although having said that, Killer isn't my favourite, I mean: Fishes can't fly? But I digress, all hail the might VdGG! Fine, that's taking it too far... -------------
